Jordan Veasley, also known as "Jungle Jordan," is a wildlife enthusiast and educator. The Japanese Macaque, or also known as "Snow Monkeys" are one of the world's most beloved monkeys. What makes them so iconic is the behavior of these monkeys soaking in the hot springs of Joshinetsu Kogen National Park. Covering these macaques also allows us to explore the biodiversity of Japan and all the animals inhabiting their islands. One of the most unique owl species lives in the Arctic. These birds are in serious decline with currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. There are an estimated 28,000 breeding pairs left, which could be as low as 7,000 breeding pairs. They for sure are an animal species we need to keep our eyes on. Red Ruffed Lemurs are a critically endangered primate from the island of Madagascar. These highly charismatic animals are an example of the pressures many species are facing on this island nation. Due to habitat degradation and other human caused pressures, Madagascar is now recognized as one of the worst biodiversity crises we find ourselves in. The African Penguin is one of the best examples of how humans have driven many species to extinction, or as in the African Penguin to the brink. Isolated to the southern portion of the African continent. Multiple pressures such as over fishing off the African coast, humans destroying African Penguin guano nests and using it for fertilizer, climate change, ocean pollution and many other pressures all have led to a massive decrease in African Penguin populations. This week we are fortunate to speak with Joy Owens, the Education Manager from the Elephant Sanctuary from Tennessee. Since 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has provided elephants retired from performance and exhibition with a safe refuge and the companionship of other elephants. The facility has grown from 110 acres to 2,700 acres and has provided sanctuary to 27 elephants, making it North America's largest natural habitat refuge for captive elephants. Ivan Carter was involved in the World's largest relocation of lions ever attempted. In 2018, twenty four lions, 6 males and 18 females, were transported via plane from South Africa to the Marromeu National Reserve in Mozambique. Ivan discusses why and how the move was made of so many lions. Katie Cannon is the education director of Carolina Tiger Rescue, North Carolina’s only federally accredited wild cat sanctuary.
