UTSA MBB Season Preview 2023

While UTSA Men's Basketball is entering play in one of the top mid-major conferences in college basketball, interest and hype levels are at an all time low. That's disappointing! We try to make heads or tails of this revamped roster by analyzing an overtime win against Western Illinois. The Roadrunners may be able to rack up some easy wins early in the season but the conference slate will be brutal and punishing. Sad meeps.

Our journey to provide coverage for each and every UTSA athletics program reached a big milestone today as we hosted our first-ever tennis podcast! In addition to her work on the court, Keegan also represents UTSA athletes on various committees and boards, as well as serving as the president of a local charity. Episode 208: Taking stock of an expanded football staff as spring practice begins

We've been out of the swing of football podcastin' due to off-the-field distractions but with spring football kicking off it's time for us to jam it back down in gear. This episode we focus more on setting the stage for spring ball, with a follow-up episode analyzing the spring period to come shortly. We talk extensively about UTSA's revamped coaching staff, including a large increase in off-field support staff member. UTSA is really starting to look like a big time program in terms of its support staff. Credit to Jeff Traylor for advocating for that, and for Dr. Campos for making it happen. At 46:40 we turn our attention to UTSA's 2023 football schedule. Despite an early bye and some double-up homestands, it's about as good of a schedule as you could ask for in the Roadrunners' AAC debut. We're all really excited for the Thanksgiving week matchup with Tulane. Keep an eye out for an additional podcast this week as we bring Dan behind the curtains for his first Patreon episode. We'll be surveying the baseball landscape around Conference USA now that we have a few weeks of play under our belt. Episode 207: UTSA 2023 Baseball Season Preview

Still reeling from a frustrating ninth-inning loss to Louisiana Tech in the Conference USA championship game, the Roadrunners head back to the diamond this Friday to begin their 2023 campaign. While UTSA will miss a lot of key contributors from last year's squad, a strong recruiting class and some instant-impact transfers should help the roster reload. Is this the year that UTSA finally breaks through to an NCAA regional appearance? Will a true starting rotation emerge? To answer these questions and more we brought on our new baseball correspondent Dan Nerdahl for his first "Around the Birdbath" appearance on the podcast. You guys have been asking for expanded baseball coverage for years and we're thrilled to partner up with Dan to make it happen. I hope you guys enjoy this deep dive into the upcoming season and give us your feedback on what you'd like to see from us throughout the season.

Episode 206: UTSA Early Signing Day Recap 2022

The Roadrunners perfectly blended high school, junior college, and transfer portal recruiting as they ended the first day of early signing period with the top-ranked class of the entire Group of 5. This is of course the best recruiting class in program history, and we're here to break down each and every addition to the roster now that they've signed their National Letters of Intent. Highlighting the class are two top-ranked JUCO offensive tackles who can compete for starting jobs on day one, as well as two veteran running backs who will compete to complement Kevorian Barnes in the backfield. UTSA added two quarterbacks in Jackson Gilkey and Owen McCown, suddenly providing UTSA with an AAC-worthy depth chart under center. The two quarterbacks will have plenty of young standout receivers to develop chemistry with over the coming years as well. The class really leaves us with just one key question left to answer... where are all the safety recruits at?

Episode 205: UTSA falls to 0-4 in bowl games

Roadrunner fans' dreams were dashed as UTSA allowed 18 unanswered points in a loss to Troy at the Cure Bowl. While the loss was definitely tough to swallow, we did learn a bit about the future of the Roadrunners with Chris Carpenter stepping into a starting role, and Justin Burke taking on play calling duties. UTSA also offered up their finest defensive performance of the season, as Clifford Chattman set a school record for interceptions in a single season. The defensive front played out of their minds, led by an impressive performance from Freshman All-American Trey Moore. We wrap up our thoughts on the bowl game loss, as well as offer a short preview on what's to come for Roadrunner fans this offseason.

Episode 204: Cure Bowl 2022 Preview

It's our last game preview of the season as #25 UTSA takes on #24 Troy in the 2022 Cure Bowl. By all accounts, this is one of the most enticing matchups through the entire bowl season, as these teams appear to be completely neck-and-neck on paper. Troy has carved out their billing with an elite defense, while the Roadrunners sport one of the top offenses in the country. Which strength will win out on the field in Orlando?

Bonus: Frank is BACK for 2023

UTSA and the San Antonio community sent a CLEAR message to the American Athletic Conference and recruits across the nation today. UTSA is here to STAY and they're willing to pay to make sure that doesn't change. A six-figure NIL deal for Frank Harris convinced him to forego the NFL for another year and lead the Roadrunners into the AAC in 2023.

Episode 203: San Antonio's first back-to-back championship

Frank Harris threw a nearly perfect game and Kevorian Barnes turned on the burners as UTSA raced past North Texas for the Roadrunners' second straight Conference USA championship. Over 41,000 fans turned out to see Jeff Traylor's team take care of business, as the Roadrunners' speed proved to be too much for UNT to handle. The loss actually ended up marking the end of Seth Littrell's time in Denton. We discuss the logic behind firing Littrell, as well as the timing of the controversial decision. Following the bowl recap we cover UTSA's bowl game draw -- a compelling matchup against Sun Belt champion Troy in the Cure Bowl. This battle of G5 titans will give UTSA a chance to earn both their first ever bowl win, as well as their first win over a ranked opponent. We also cover some coaching news, as Offensive Coordinator Will Stein is off to Oregon, UTSA's second OC to hit the Power Five in as many years. Special teams coordinator Justin Burke will make the move to Co-OC as Jeff Traylor continues to prioritize internal promotions over external searches.

Episode 202: There will be blood

UTEP had us in the first half, I ain't gonna lie. But the Miners got too cocky and karma pulled them back down to reality. UTSA ends the rivalry series with an 8-2 lead over the Miners. Until next time, primos! With the Miners left heart broken in the land of misfit toys that is Conference USA 4.0, the Roadrunners quickly turn their attention to North Texas. UTSA and UNT will meet in the Alamodome for a rare true rivalry matchup in a conference championship game. The last meeting between these two programs was extremely close, with Frank Harris, Oscar Cardenas, and JT Clark delivering the late-game theatrics to steal a win. The Roadrunners are two-score favorites this week, but will the continuing string of injuries finally take their toll? We have much more content planned for you guys this week as we'll be joining the Mean Green Show for an additional C-USA Championship preview, then dropping a Patreon bonus episode later this week to discuss the coaching carousel.

Episode 201: Conference USA Regular Season Champions

The Roadrunners showed up big time in another wet, dreary road game as UTSA destroyed the Rice Owls and hoisted the 2022 C-USA Regular Season championship trophy. Jared and Adrian break down the psychological focus which helped UTSA establish their dominance over Rice for the second straight season in a row. UTSA also leveraged the win to sneak their way into the Top 25 (Coaches Poll) for the first time this season. With their conference championship game berth secured, the Roadrunners will wrap up their regular season by hosting the UTEP Miners in the Alamodome this Saturday. The Miners are a win away from a bowl game, but they're heavy underdogs due to health concerns at the quarterback position. Will Jeff Traylor take his foot off the gas to keep his guys rested on a short week? We give our thoughts in our game preview of the offensively-challenged Miners.

Episode 200: Bustin' Ruston

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for 200 episodes! We never dreamed that the podcast would see this much success to keep us motivated to pump out so many episodes, and we have each and every one of you to thank for the distinct pleasure of giving us a reason to talk ball for several hours a week. With Adrian on the beach in Oaxaca, our intern CJ Benavides makes his debut on our non-Patreon feed to relish in UTSA's delicious 51-7 dismantling of Louisiana Tech. Buddy, these aren't the Bulldogs of old. Crazy to see how much these two programs have grown apart over the past five years. After frolicking in the pleasures of a blowout victory, we now turn our focus to a big game in Houston against Rice. The Roadrunners need a win to clinch their berth in the C-USA championship game, while the Owls are fighting for their first bowl bid since 2014. Stakes are high, but the forecasted temperature is low. Can the Roadrunners overcome the elements once again, or will a cold rainy day lead to another disappointment ala Denton 2021?

Episode 199: The Trapezoid Traveled

After blowing a 14 point lead in the fourth quarter UTSA still found a way to escape UAB in double overtime for the program's first-ever win in Birmingham. The Roadrunners used a surging run game bolstered by yet another brand new starting lineup for the offensive line. UTSA's big nasties helped Kevorian Barnes to another huge game as the redshirt freshman begins to blossom into a star. The Roadrunners will return to the Alamodome this week to face a struggling Louisiana Tech team. While the Bulldogs haven't looked great this year, they are coming off their best performance of the year after forcing five turnovers against Middle Tennessee. We lay out why La Tech is unlikely to pull off the massive upset in what could be the two program's last meeting on the gridiron.

Episode 198: The most in-depth UTSA basketball preview on the internet

They said it couldn't be done, but we proved them wrong! [sicko laughter] Enjoy an hour and 15 minutes of UTSA men's basketball season preview content. Japhet Medor has emerged as a likely team leader at point guard as the Roadrunners seek to move away from a dribble-dominated offense to a more pass-happy half-court set. We break down our projected started five, as well as some likely contributors off of the bench, and some new names to learn heading into the season. UTSA will tip-off their season today with an exhibition against Schreiner, with regulation play to begin with a home match against Trinity in the Convocation Center next week. The Roadrunners will enjoy playing seven of their first eight games at home in a bit of unconventional scheduling work from Athletic Director Lisa Campos. Can the Roadrunners improve on their miserable #312 KenPom rating from last year? We hope so, but we'll settle for no losses against non-DI opponents this season. Unfortunately we weren't able to talk much women's hoops in this episode, but thankfully we already did a LENGTH preview of Karen Aston's squad in this previous Patreon episode. Well worth a sub if you're looking to learn more about the rapidly-improving women's team.

Episode 197: Birmingham Bound

We got beef with the San Antonio Brahmas! Sorry for the bad pun, but we'll wait for the check in the mail, thanks. Did you know that UTSA has never won a football game in Birmingham despite being in the same conference as UAB for 10* years? We break down what it will take for the Roadrunners to earn their first dub in the Magic City, and why Vegas has the Roadrunners at just a one point favorite despite UAB's 4-4 record. Be sure to check back on the site later this week for our basketball season preview!

Episode 196: We did that damn thing

The Roadrunners used a miraculous string of four plays to rip UNT's heart out of their chest as UTSA moved to 6-2 on the season with a commanding first place lead over the rest of Conference USA. It was both a memorable and monumental win for UTSA as they served North Texas payback for not only ruining the Roadrunners' regular season in 2021, but as well as The Drive in 2017. UNT was happy to sit back in zone coverage and cede the run to UTSA, a challenge to which Brenden Brady and Kevorian Barnes were happy to answer. Meanwhile, UTSA heavily focused on stopping the run on defense and Austin Aune wasn't able to consistently make UTSA pay for their aggressive play. Unfortunately, the big win was a bit marred by the news that Rashad Wisdom will be out for the rest of the season due to injury. Episode 194: Back in the C-USA Driver's Seat

Western Kentucky took their third consecutive L on behalf of Frank Harris and the UTSA Roadrunners. Tough scene for the Hilltoppers. This week's episode includes a breakdown of UTSA's 31-28 win over WKU, some speculation about the root causes of the Roadrunners' wildly bad injury streak, and a bit of a rant against the casuals in the UTSA fan base. Haven't had one of those in a while. You get a two for on deal on this podcast. We also preview an FIU Panthers squad that's extremely young and looking for answers at a lot of spots. They've dealt with just as many injury losses as the Roadrunners, and will likely be short-handed against UTSA. Can a sophomore quarterback from Duncanville have his breakout performance for FIU? To wrap things up we also give our immediate impressions of UTSA's newest commit, quarterback Jackson Gilkey from Ennis, Texas. We breakdown his game, and what his commitment means for the position group in the class of 2023. Our Patreon bonus episode this week will be a run down of the non-football fall sports at UTSA so be sure to tune in later this week and get caught up! Subscribe to the podcast
