Can an inexperienced development team without any senior members can implement scrum?
Can an inexperienced development team without any senior members can implement scrum? While there's a debate on the necessity of technical excellence for scrum's foundation, one suggestion is to define a clear DOD (definition of done) to unify the team. By revisiting and evolving this definition, teams can incrementally improve and move towards better technical excellence and adopt more Scrum practices. YDS: How do I deal with a developer who does not keep to an agreement?
When dealing with working agreements gone wrong with a developer, we always hope that it’s a misunderstanding that can be solved with an easy conversation. In the cases where it’s not, we believe this is when a Scrum Master needs friends. Scrum Masters should always be willing to work with other areas of management such as leadership, financial, human resources, etc. If a developer is consistently breaking an agreement this is where we believe management should get involved to create a performance plan for that individual and hopefully resolve the issue. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Learn more about your ad choices. Richie Peters has experience as a Scrum Master with a background in engineering management and has worked in various software companies. YDS: How Does a Scrum Team Handle Unplanned Work?
Todd and Ryan address a question about handling unplanned work that is not measured in Sprint planning and affects a team's predictability in meeting Sprint goals. They recommend holding back capacity back in Sprint planning to account for the unplanned work and plan realistically rather than at 100% capacity. They suggest cutting capacity in half if about half of the work in a Sprint is unplanned. They also caution against equating predictability with maintaining the same velocity or throughput and recommend measuring unplanned work transparently and gathering data on it. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: Who Facilitates the Sprint Review in Scrum?
The video discusses who should facilitate a Sprint review in a Scrum team. Todd and Ryan believe the Product Owner should be involved in the process to ensure the right stakeholders are present to adapt the product backlog. However, the Product Owner doesn't necessarily have to be the one facilitating the Sprint Review but should be responsible for sending invites and ensuring the right people are in attendance. The Sprint review is seen as an underserved event that provides an opportunity to adapt the product backlog. YDS: How to Return to Being a Scrum Master After a Break
The video discusses how someone who took a break from being a Scrum Master to run a food delivery business can get back into the role. They also advise preparing a narrative to explain the gap in the resume and upgrading skills through additional education or community participation. YDS: Is the Product Backlog the Source of Work for Scrum?
Andy asks whether all planned work by developers for a product must come from the product backlog. The answer is yes, assuming all developers work on the same product. However, problems arise when teams work on multiple things simultaneously. The product backlog items populate a Sprint backlog, which is then executed, leading to an increment. YDS: Thoughts on Agile Coaches and Scrum Masters in an Org
We believe that organizations make mistakes by having agile coaches and scrum masters. The scrum master should be the agile coach of the organization, and creating separate hierarchies diminishes the role of the scrum master. We also believe that some organizations claim to use agile but have not actually changed anything. They suggest using evidence-based management to determine if agile is working and to drive a narrative based on the data rather than trying to make it fit a preconceived narrative. YDS: Can a Shorter Sprint Length Help a Scrum Team Learn?
The video discusses whether shorter sprints can help a scrum team learn faster. Ryan and Todd explain that sprint length is a planning horizon and there is no right or wrong sprint length. The length of the sprint should be decided by the team and organization, based on factors such as how long they can go without feedback from customers and the stability of the product backlog. Starting with shorter sprints can help identify pain points in the process and facilitate learning. The ideal sprint length can be determined after a few sprints. Todd suggests starting with one week sprints if an increment can be delivered in that time frame. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: Questions Scrum Masters Should Ask When Starting with EBM
The video discusses essential questions for Scrum Masters to consider when starting with Evidence-Based Management (EBM). EBM involves goals, evidence, and empiricism. The first step is to ensure precise and transparent goals and assess their alignment. Next, measuring the right things, such as unrealized value, current value, time to market, and ability to innovate, is essential. The Scrum Master should also consider their relationships with the organization, as EBM can uncover uncomfortable truths. It's necessary to have methods and techniques to handle these situations positively. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. Todd and Ryan suggest looking at the aging of work items and discussing this in the daily scrum to help identify if the team is carrying over work that is not being done or if it's an ongoing problem. YDS: Can ChatGPT Replace a Human Scrum Master?
Todd and Ryan believe that the potential of new tools, such as ChatGPT apps, to replace the role of a scrum master in facilitating and guiding teams is limited. Ryan, who has been working with ChatGPT, believes that while the AI-powered tool is impressive, it is not yet advanced enough to fully take over the role of a human scrum master. He also thinks that the interactions and collaborations between team members are essential and cannot be fully automated. Todd agrees and states that tools cannot replace the experience, intuition, EQ, and all that human scrum masters possess. They suggest that these tools can be used as assistive technology, but they cannot replace the role of a scrum master. They also give an analogy of a grand master chess player using an engine to calculate moves but still requiring human understanding and decision-making abilities. Overall, Todd and Ryan believe that the job of a scrum master is safe from ChatGPT or other similar tools for now. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: Creating Strategic Goals for Organizational Alignment
The video is about strategies for helping executives with trouble articulating their goals. Todd and Ryan suggest asking executives open-ended questions about what is possible and what they expect to see once specific work is completed. It's important to tread lightly and warmly into the conversation and ensure that it empowers the executive. The alignment and strategy of goals are also essential for creating company-wide alignment. YDS: Right Sizing Product Backlog Items in Scrum
The video concerns right-sizing work in Scrum without historical data or cycle time. Todd and Ryan suggest that, in the absence of data, one should aim to complete product backlog items within half the sprint or less and focus on having small, well-refined stories that are tightly defined and understood. Ryan also notes that data can be unreliable if the team composition, product backlog, or project focus are unstable and suggests that good product backlog refinement and a clear sprint goal are essential for success in such situations. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. In this video, Ryan and Todd discuss how to deal with the culture of busyness in organizations. They talk about the concept of context switching, where people are assigned multiple tasks, but can't do any of them well due to being too busy. They suggest making the busyness transparent and measuring its impact to show that it is not only disruptive to people but also costly. They recommend making the case for reflection time by gathering data on where people are working and why they are working on those things. They also suggest having conversations about the issue and sharing studies on context switching to demonstrate the negative impact of busyness on productivity and revenue. They conclude by stating that the key is to show the benefit of addressing the culture of busyness to those who may be uninterested in the problem by using language that resonates with them ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: How Do I Bring Agility to a Regulated Environment?
Todd and Ryan suggest that in a heavily regulated environment such as defense, automation of testing and validation can help increase agility. They also recommend standardizing processes and inviting compliance and legal teams to scrum events to keep them informed and plan for approvals and phase gates. Todd mentioned that feedback may be delayed in a highly regulated environment, such as building software for submarines. Still, it is essential to continue to validate and assess the product's value, even if it is later on. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: Does Throughput Have Similar Issues Seen with Velocity?
Ryan and Todd discuss the potential issues with using the throughput metric in agile development. They express the concern that comparing throughput between teams could lead to manipulation and abuse, just like with velocity and story points. Ryan and Todd suggest that a probabilistic forecast would be a better approach instead of a deterministic forecast. They argue that the community should embrace flow metrics as a better alternative to traditional metrics, like velocity and story points, and avoid the anti-patterns that come with those metrics. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: How Do Flow Metrics in the Sprint Retrospective Work?
Todd, Prateek, and Ryan discuss using flow metrics in the Sprint Retrospective. They mention that flow metrics are usually associated with data analysis and may not be immediately relevant to team improvement. Still, they believe that these metrics could be helpful in this context. They discuss the use of cycle time, throughput, item aging, and WIP limits and how they could be used to monitor progress and identify issues within the team. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com F Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: How Can Quarterly Planning and EBM Goals Work Together?
Todd and Ryan discuss aligning evidence-based management (EBM) goals with quarterly planning. They suggest that goals should live outside the boundaries of quarterly planning but that placing targets can still motivate them. They also mention that in EBM, there are three levels of goals: strategic (long-term), intermediate (near-term), and tactical (short-term). They suggest that intermediate goals, with a three-to-six month horizon, are a good fit for quarterly planning but that plans should be evaluated and adjusted quarterly. They also mention that EBM is about empirically evaluating different goal horizons and constantly asking if the goals are reasonable. Ryan and Todd also suggests that EBM can inform and nudge planning to happen more frequently. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: How do Scrum.org and ProKanban.org Classes Compare?
The video compares the Scrum.org and ProKanban.org classes. The critical difference between the two courses is that the PSK (Professional Scrum with Kanban) includes both Scrum and Kanban concepts, while the Professional Kanban only focuses on Kanban. The AMP (Applying Metrics for Predictability) and PAL-EBM (Evidence-Based Management) are two different frameworks and classes. The AMP focuses on time-to-market metrics, while PAL-EBM is a broader framework for evidence-based management. The two classes work well together but are distinct and different. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information. YDS: How Do Flow Metrics in the Sprint Review Work?
Todd, Prateek, and Ryan discuss using flow metrics in the Sprint Review. The four flow metrics, throughput, cycle time, item work age, and whip limits, are defined at the beginning of the video. The Sprint Review is a collaborative discussion about the product, and stakeholders such as customers, users, buyers, and internal executives are present to assess the value and give feedback. The conversation focuses on how to maximize value and what to do next. Throughput is the primary flow metric in the Sprint Review event. The stakeholders use probabilistic forecasting to assess the risk and make decisions based on the forecast, discussing which items can be dropped or switched around. The discussion aims to manage stakeholders' expectations and level set their expectations. Finally, the video stresses the importance of continuous flow metric assessment and sharing of new and greater risks. ⏩ Join Ryan and Todd for a Scrum.org course: https://buytickets.at/agileforhumansllc Todd and Ryan also co-authored a book - Fixing Your Scrum: Practical Solutions to Common Scrum Problems. 👉 Buy Fixing Your Scrum at Amazon: https://amzn.to/3BMvkcX ✅Subscribe to our Channel to learn more about Agile, Scrum, and Kanban: https://www.youtube.com/agileforhumans?sub_confirmation=1 For more information about Agile for Humans, visit: Community: https://community.agileforhumans.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/agileforhumans Twitter: https://twitter.com/agileforhumans LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/agile-for-humans-llc Website: https://www.agileforhumans.com #facilitation #facilitationskills #ScrumMaster #ScrumMasterTraining #Scrum #ScrumFramework #HowToBecomeAScrumMaster #ScrumMasterCertification #AgileForHumans #FreeScrumMasterCourse #FreeScrumTraining See omny.fm/listener for privacy information.
