This weekend, the rub meet the road for Comrades runners, in their quest to conquer the 97th Comrades Marathon. The Up Run from Durban to Pietermaritzburg was no easy journey, it was one that required strength, training and proper endurance. Mike V caught them on the finish line minutes after they won. Ah, the age-old question that's caused countless awkward fumbles at restaurant tables: who picks up the tab? Remember those epic pre-pandemic movie nights? Apparently, things have gotten a bit more lit... expensive, that is. Ster-Kinekor and Nu-Metro, the cinema kings of SA, have jacked up their prices. We're talking double, even triple what they were charging back in 2014! Some folks blame the pandemic for this box office bummer, but streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime have been stealing the show for years. These services offer blockbusters for a fraction of the price. There's a plot twist though! Big-budget flicks like 'Barbie' and 'Oppenheimer' are making a comeback, raking in serious dough at the box office. Even 'Dune: Part Two' is crushing it globally. Apple and Amazon are looking at things differently, releasing some of their biggest hits in cinemas first. However, our local cinemas know a blockbuster a month isn't enough to keep the popcorn machine churning. When I was 8 years old in Grade 2, I can never forget about 9 monkeys that made me run for my life. I don't know what upset them. Ever since then, when I see a monkey, I behave like a black man seeing a snake. Last year, one day I was locked in the house with monkeys. The wind blew the door closed, and I ran and locked myself in my room, calling for help. A gentleman working at my neighbour's heard me and came with a broom but couldn't fight them off because they were frustrated and wanted to leave but had no way out. My neighbor, to my shame, heard the drama and entered the house and simply alpha'd them. After that, I also concluded that monkeys are racist or they racially profile people.
