It’s a recipe for discouragement, doubt, and fear. Here’s the beautiful truth: God’s idea of fulfilling your desires is often way better than what we imagine. He’s orchestrating things behind the scenes that we can’t see. And sometimes, He’s using the waiting period to grow us, mature us, and prepare us for the fulfillment of those desires in ways that are far beyond our understanding. When I shifted my own hope from circumstances to God, I found joy—not in the outcome, but in His presence. And guess what? Even when the things I hoped for finally happened, it wasn’t perfect, but I had peace because my hope was anchored where it needed to be. I know waiting is hard. But you’re not alone in this journey. I remember being taught how to build a fire as a young girl. We were on a leadership camp with school, and each group was given a box of matches and a raw chicken, and told to make our own dinner! It was up to us to make the fire, suspend the chicken over it, and cook it until it was completely done (so we didn’t make ourselves sick). We listened to what we were supposed to do and all sat there a little shell-shocked for a few minutes, until our grumbling bellies helped us to start making a plan to feed them 😊 First we had to gather kindling so the fire had something to start it off with Next, some small twigs to catch light and give us flames big enough for the larger pieces of wood we gathered to stay lit. Then large pieces that would make a fire hot enough to cook a whole chicken! Phew, what I learned about making and sustaining a fire that day has stayed with me until now and helped me in so many areas of my life. I realized on a coaching call with a client the other day, that this is exactly how we get to nurture our relationship with God too. I remember him blurting out in the middle of the store, “hey, I dreamed about this when I was young, and now here it is!” As we sat talking it through we realized that God had showed him something that wasn’t yet invented, and was sharing a secret from the treasuries of Heaven. “Jesus, help!” I found myself saying this a few weeks ago as my husband and I sat praying together before bed. I had a hip replacement operation in April, and it was a hard road to recovery for me. On this particular day, everything seemed to be so, so heavy. I was in a lot of pain, I was tired, I was feeling weak and there was a heavy cloud of despair over me that I couldn’t seem to move. My normally positive and strong personality felt like she had gone away - and I had literally nothing left to give. As we sat and looked at each other, all I could do was say, “Jesus, help”. With tears streaming down my face, I curled up and went to sleep. Then something happened during the night. All I know is that I woke up and the cloud of despair that had felt so heavy the night before – was GONE. I don’t know how He did it, I just know that He heard me and He took the cloud away! I remember as a new Christian I would write Bible verses on pieces of paper, and put them in my shoes. Yes, in between the sole of my foot and my shoe, so that I was literally ‘standing on the Word’. OK, it was a little weird, but it did something deep inside of me that still helps me to this day. It helped me to be AWARE of God throughout my day (because the piece of paper constantly irritated my foot). This did something amazing – it caused me to stop and talk with God about whatever was going on at that moment. Ask Him a question. Tell Him how I was feeling. Find out what He was thinking. And it trained my heart to be in relationship with Him, not just pray to Him when I needed something. It was as if we just spent the day together hanging out. He with me, and me with Him. And that has impacted my life in deep and wonderful ways. Well in Revelations 3:20 it says that He is doing just that. Standing at the door of your heart, and knocking. And He is asking to come in and spend time with you. As we remember this weekend how Jesus voluntarily did the ONLY thing that would bring us back home to our loving Father. He said, “yes” to dying on a cross so that you and I could live our lives on Earth knowing that we are deeply loved. Knowing that He paid the hardest price to bring us back into the family, makes us think again about answering the door when He knocks and asks to come in and spend time with us, right? I’m a big dreamer, but I’d always get scared of dreaming too big in case I was just doing what I want, instead of what God wants. In Jeremiah 33:3 He says, “Call to Me and I will answer you, and tell you [and even show you] great and mighty things, [things which have been confined and hidden], which you do not know and understand and cannot distinguish.' Now doesn’t that just blow your mind? God says that if we’ll call to Him, He will answer us and show and tell us great and mighty things. Can you imagine what it could be like to have God’s vision of things, instead of the small things we can think of? If we said, “yes” to Him, then we would never have to wonder about His will and we could dream big dreams WITH Him. “Lisa, I want to break your reliance on your bank account balance, and fix your reliance on Me instead” As I let that slowly sink in I realized that some of the biggest ‘complaints’ I had towards God, were actually MY own stinkin’ thinkin’ about what His provision looks like. You see, God is someone who gives us ALL equal opportunities To be saved, To be loved and To be provided for. He has ALL that we need in order to do what He has for us to do. The problem is that we don’t access it. Sometimes because we simply don’t know how. Sometimes because we don’t believe that he is that good. Sometimes just because we have more faith in what we know, than in what He’s offering. When I’d sit down to think about whether I was doing what God had called me to do, I’d get SO frustrated. I wanted to go ‘all in’ and live my life fully for Jesus, but I had no clue where to begin. So I gave God my wholehearted “yes” and set about asking Him how to do it. It meant diving deep into the Bible, sitting under the teaching of mentors and being determined to deepen His and my relationship. And I wouldn’t trade any of it. Because today I have a deeply rich relationship with Him and I KNOW who I am and what I’m here to do. There I was, sitting alone in my car, crying. I wasn’t quite sure why there was so much emotion welling up inside me, but I knew that the anxiety I was feeling was real. You see, I’d been awake since 3:30am and driven over 200 miles to attend a Conference that I knew would be a game changer for me. So why was I so anxious? I took a deep breath and asked Jesus what was going on. “You’re afraid of meeting a room full of people” He said. Ugh, it felt so good to know that He knew why I was so nervous. So I asked Him what He did when He felt nervous? What did He used to do? Then I remembered the scene in the Garden of Gethsemane. He reached out to His Father first, and asked His friends to come around Him for support. As my shoulders relaxed, I wiped my eyes and listened to what He had to say… In today’s episode I share what it’s like to know that Jesus is WITH you in every situation in your life. He sees you. There’s something so comforting about knowing that you can come and talk with your Heavenly Dad about anything. And by anything, I mean A N Y T H I N G. He knows what’s happening in your life and He’s not embarrassed or shocked or overwhelmed by any of it. Phew! Read Philippians 4:6-7 (I love the Amplified version), and feel the love as you see how God offers to swap your anxiety, for peace (now that’s a great deal right there) Peace is SO cool. Jesus is the Prince of Peace and in Phil 4:7 He promises that He, PEACE, will come and reassure your heart. He, PEACE, will come and help you beyond your own understanding. He, PEACE, will come and stand GUARD over your heart and your mind… If you will let Him. So whatever you’re worried about today, take it in your hand and give it to God (like you’re giving Him a parcel). Then see Him giving you a parcel too. Open it, and inside you’ll be amazed to see that He has given you peace in return for your worries. I don’t even begin to know how that is a fair deal, but because my loving Heavenly Father is making the exchange, I’ll take it. You know when you read a verse in the Bible and suddenly you KNOW that it’s talking about you? Right?! Well, this was one of those times for me. I know that when God does that He is actually trying to get me to see something that He wants to help me with. I just get to say “yes” (no matter how uncomfortable it seems to confront the issue He’s highlighting) So I came to Him and said, “Lord, please help me to see what’s really going on underneath this habitual behaviour, and let me know what I get to do about it” As He always does, He walked me through what was really going on, and showed me how His Truth could help me to get free of the way this thing has plagued me for way too long! It was beautiful and hope-filled and help-full too. So as you listen to or watch today’s episode know that when God highlights something that’s going on in you, it’s because He wants to see you set free from that thing – once and for all. I was listening to someone speak the other day and they said a most interesting thing… They said, "well if it’s Winter then you don’t go out and try to plant a seed in the frozen soil, you wait until Spring to do that” It was like a lightbulb went off inside my head. Of course you don’t take your pickaxe and try to dig up the rock hard soil to plant a seed!! You look at what season you’re in and you do what the season lets you do In Winter you wrap up warm, take it slower, drive carefully. In Spring you watch all the plants coming back to life, stop and smell the roses, come out of the cocoon of winter. In Summer you enjoy long warm days, get a suntan, spend time in nature. In Fall you marvel at the leaves changing color, start wearing warmer clothes, watch the trees settling in to sleep. So if we pay such close attention to the seasons around us, why not pay attention to the season God has us in too? What if we took the time to ask Him what He has for us in this season? What He is giving us the ability to do with Him? What He has planned for us and through us? Seems to make sense right? I could imagine the jamming sessions these people would have and the amazing music they’d make together. So what if God created YOU to do or love a certain thing? Change can be hard. Moving away from where you’re comfortable and what you like to do, can be a mixture of scary and exciting at the same time. Transitions can feel like this too. Christmastime means different things to different people. For some it’s a time of deep pain For others it’s a great opportunity to get together with loved ones For some it’s stressful because of the expectations we’ve put on it… But underneath it all there is a real reason for the season that we all engage in - one way or another. And that reason is LOVE. My husband and I are visiting our kids and grandkids in South Africa at the moment and strongly feel the invitation of Jesus, to love. One of the biggest questions we get to walk through with our business coaching clients is… “How do I know how to set goals and plan for business growth and profit when James 4:13-14 says that we’re not supposed to do it?” On the surface it looks like James is telling us that it is arrogant to be planning each day and instead we should say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.” Well, how does that fit with the reality of needing to make solid plans to ensure business success? Even Jesus said in Mat 6:25-34 that we mustn’t worry about tomorrow because we have no ability to affect it. But before you pull your hair out my friend, let’s look a little deeper… The heart behind both verses is an invitation to be so rooted in God’s love for you that you no longer try to make your own way in life. When we set goals from this place, we’re coming at it from the wrong mind and heart space. It’s an ‘orphan’ mindset that says “I’ve got to look out for myself because no-one else will”. And this is what both Jesus and James are really going after – getting rid of that orphan mindset by showing us how to step into being a son or daughter of a loving Father. I was sitting on the edge of my seat watching a talent show. A young man nervously took centre stage and gave Simon Cowell only 1 word answers (he was so nervous!) And what unfolded next, blew me, Simon and the audience away. You know when you see someone step up to do something that looks scary and you’re secretly saying, “please be good, please be good…”? Well, this boy showed us what the gold inside of him looked like when he opened his mouth and sang. Now what if we looked at ourselves in the mirror each morning and said, “I’m expecting to see the gold God has placed in me, today” “I’m expecting to see the gold in all the other people I get to meet with today too” “I’m expecting to see the goodness of God!” Wow, this would set us all up to see the beauty in God, ourselves and others, each and every day. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” (Mark 4:38) When we’re in the middle of a raging storm in our lives, sometimes we don’t understand why Jesus doesn’t seem to be as stressed about it as we are?!? After all, the sea was so rough that even these hardy fishermen were scared (now that’s a bad storm!) But just the fact that Jesus was WITH them, helped them through the circumstances that was terrifying them. He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. I’ve been hungry to see the miraculous nature of God for a loooooong time. Pain feels terrible! It’s just a fact. And so we do all that we can to try and get rid of it. Find a solution. Ignore it… But what if pain is actually there for a reason, and it’s a good reason? What if we actually stopped and looked at the pain – its cause, its function, its purpose, and took positive, God-led action? Imagine what could happen!?
