S2 Ep 50An ACE Christmas with... Laughter
Hello there everybody, this is another xmas short from the ACE Podcast. We’ve got a few bite sized episodes in December, looking at all the elements that go into making a great Christmas and end of year. What would Christmas be without laughter and merriment, that’s why we’ve got comedian Georgie Carroll joining us today. Georgie’s probably best known as the nurse comedian, who in her own words started mining her professional life as a nurse for comedy. You’ve probably seen her around, on tv, radio, comedy specials and perhaps promoting her book "Off the Charts" which is chock full of war stories from her nursing days.We got together and talked about nursing, aged care and of course Christmas. The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you by SilVR Adventures ⬇️ 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 ⬇️🍏 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ace-aged-care-enrichment/id1528261777🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4wk2d6NjlbHg8Eid35TNB2❤️ iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-ace-aged-care-enrichment-77188643/💙 Listen Online: https://silvradventures.com.au/podcast/#silvradventures #agedcareenrichment #acepodcast #mentalhealth #olderadults #qualityoflife #healthcare #opportunity #awareness #loneliness #isolation

S2 Ep 49An ACE Christmas with... Food
We’re doing something a little bit different throughout the month of December. To get ourselves in the holiday spirit or Christmas mood we’re presenting a few short, conversations over the next few weeks about this special time of year. Each episode will focus on a different element, and today’s episode is all about food. Before we get to the food coma on Christmas Day there’s work to be done behind the scenes preparing meals, especially for people receiving care. Our guest is Sam Bridgewater from Pure Food Co, who help care providers deliver nutritious and appropriate meals for people with diverse care needs. It’s a quick, fun conversation that will hopefully whet your appetite, yes pun intended, for all the delicious food at Christmas. The good news is that there will be another one of these bite-sized conversations, again, coming out each Friday, so you’ll get a double serve of us for the next few weeks. The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you by SilVR Adventures ⬇️ 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 ⬇️🍏 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ace-aged-care-enrichment/id1528261777🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4wk2d6NjlbHg8Eid35TNB2❤️ iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-ace-aged-care-enrichment-77188643/💙 Listen Online: https://silvradventures.com.au/podcast/#silvradventures #agedcareenrichment #acepodcast #mentalhealth #olderadults #qualityoflife #healthcare #opportunity #awareness #loneliness #isolation #dementia

S2 Ep 48De Hogeweyk and a Normal Life with Dementia - Jannette Spiering (Be Advice)
Today, we have an interview that we’ve been looking forward to for a while, with Jannette Spiering from Be Advice and also De Hogeweyk in the Netherlands. Even if you don’t recognise the names you may know the story, it’s been described as “the dementia village” a name Jannette and the team strongly dislike, but it’s received a lot of attention for it’s mission of creating a normal life for people living with dementia. They do all sorts of fantastic stuff in De Hogeweyk to ensure that residents retain their freedom and have a fulfilling life with support from the care teams. With restaurants, a supermarket, and the freedom for residents to walk around the neighbourhood, Jannette and the team pioneered this approach in the 90s.We’re fast approaching the end of 2021 still feels weird to say, and we’ll be doing something a little special throughout December. In the three weeks before Christmas we’ll be featuring some shorter, bite sized episodes each Tuesday and Friday talking about one aspect of Christmas and the holidays. It’ll be a little bit of fun to get us all in the spirit for the end of the year. The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you by SilVR Adventures ⬇️ 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 ⬇️🍏 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ace-aged-care-enrichment/id1528261777🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4wk2d6NjlbHg8Eid35TNB2❤️ iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-ace-aged-care-enrichment-77188643/💙 Listen Online: https://silvradventures.com.au/podcast/This episode is sponsored by Ending Loneliness Together, a national network of organisations who have come together to address the emerging problem of loneliness in Australia. S2 Ep 47Preparing for the 5 Pillars Plan - Kerryn Dillon and Rich Ainley (PwC)
You may have heard our episode with Professor Joseph Ibrahim a fortnight ago, called The Legacy of the Royal Commission, in which Joe chatted about the impact of the Royal Commission’s final report and the Government’s policy response. Well this episode continues that conversation from a different viewpoint. On the show today we're talking to Kerryn Dillon and Rich Ainley from PwC, who as well as advising many aged care providers on matters of structure and management, guided the Government in the creation of the so-called "Five Pillars Plan".This episode is really about deconstructing the effects that this Government plan will have on the industry, from management, to care workers and to care recipients and families. It turns out, it’ll take some time for changes to set in, but in the meantime Kerryn and Rich have some ideas that can help the industry get ready for imminent change. If you’ve been listening to these episodes and wondering, hmm how can I help them keep releasing episodes? The answer is pretty easy! Just jump onto your podcast listening app and leave us a review with all your lovely thoughts about the show - they go a long way to helping us find new listeners and opportunities. And lastly, we’re fast approaching the end of the year and wanted to sow a little seed that we’re doing something fun and different for our episodes in December - we’ll tell you about more, next time. S2 Ep 45The COVID Response in Aged Care - Chris Mamarelis (Whiddon)
Today's conversation is all about the COVID response in Australian aged care. Now this is a bit of a first for us - we’ve been interviewing prominent and interesting folk from the aged care industry for the last year and we’ve yet to have a conversation focused on COVID. But helping us take an in-depth look at the response so far and the future of how the aged care sector can adapt to a world in which we live with COVID, is CEO of Whiddon Aged Care, Chris Mamarelis. One topic we focus on, which you may relate to or find interesting, is the confusing and problematic communication throughout the COVID response from various levels of Government. Chris and the Whiddon team have recently released a paper identifying some recurring problems and proposing possible solutions to mitigate this in future.Call to action! S2 Ep 42Dementia Futures - Dr. Timothy Rittman (University of Cambridge) and Ian Sherriff (University of Plymouth)
Today's episode is about finding new horizons in dementia care and it focuses on two different approaches in the UK that are having positive impacts on the period of diagnosis and life with dementia - from brand new technology that’s increasing the speed and accuracy of Alzheimer’s diagnosis to how a community led approach can transform the everyday experiences for people with dementia. We're delighted by two esteemed guests for this discussion. Firstly, Dr. Timothy Rittman from the department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge. Tim is working alongside his colleague, Professor Zoe Kourtzi on an AI program that uses brain scans to predict whether somebody will develop Alzheimer's, and how fast the disease will progress. We're also talking to Ian Sherriff, who’s been leading efforts throughout an astounding number of organisations in the UK, including the University of Plymouth, to shape supportive and enabling communities for people living with dementia. Some of the fantastic work he’s done has involved doctors and dentists surgeries, airlines and airports, 10,000 parishes and rural communities across the UK.Call to action! S2 Ep 41Multicultural Care - Lisa Tribuzio and Niki Rittinghausen (Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing)
Today, we have an interesting conversation about an often overlooked subject in aged care - cultural diversity. We're delighted to be joined by two guests from the Centre for Cultural Diversity in Ageing, Lisa Tribuzio and Nikki Rittinghausen.A lot of this conversation focuses on how interpreting, translating and language appropriate resources are essential for linguistically diverse older adults, both in home care and residential care. With a third of older adults in Australia coming from non-English speaking backgrounds, isolation, exclusion and miscommunication due to language are consistent obstacles to overcome when delivering care and you’ll hear Lisa share some of the challenges her grandparents faced in living and ageing in Australia with English as a second language. S2 Ep 39Intergenerational Education - Greg Cronan (Intergenerational Learning Australia)
Today, we're talking about the two-way benefits of developing sustainable connections and bonds between older adults and children, and to help us explore this topic in detail we are joined by Greg Cronan from Intergenerational Learning Australia. We're sure most of you would have watched the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) show 'Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds'? Greg has worked with many of the same guests and team that featured on the show and he shares with us a lot of the transformative benefits that collaborative learning programs can have for both generations. With a background outside of aged care, Greg became interested in using technology to connect older adults and kids together where they could bring meaning, excitement and support to each other through a structured learning program. One of the things that Greg talks about is the personal connections that participants in these programs develop and how that can improve the quality of life and engagement for both parties. We also feature in this episode a little audio snippet from Greg’s work, in which you can hear some one of the classroom sessions unfolding as well as some participants giving their feedback. As always if you enjoy the show, please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. S2 Ep 37Latin America's Silver Economy - Flora Proverbio (Ethnos Strategy)
Today, we’re talking to somebody from a country and region we haven’t heard a lot about. Our guest is Flora Proverbio from Buenos Aires Argentina who does quite a few different things. As it turns out older adults may need to follow the exact opposite instructions to what you’d expect, to keep them safe from injury and illness and Ngaire really clarifies this misunderstanding in the episode. She also talks about how we’re putting the cart before the horse with our fixation on nutrition, and why our first priority should be that the food is being eaten in residential care.A little quick reminder that if you want to help the show out you can do two things - sharing an episode with a friend is great, and leaving us a review online is even greater! The Aged Care Enrichment Podcast is brought to you by SilVR Adventures ⬇️ 𝗟𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗻, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗶𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 ⬇️🍏 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ace-aged-care-enrichment/id1528261777🟢 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/4wk2d6NjlbHg8Eid35TNB2❤️ iHeartRadio: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-ace-aged-care-enrichment-77188643/💙 Listen Online: https://silvradventures.com.au/podcast/#silvradventures #agedcareenrichment #acepodcast #mentalhealth #olderadults #qualityoflife #healthcare #opportunity
