Ep 167167 HIPAA Violation Considerations with Ann Marie DePalma

We're excited to have Ann Marie DePalma, RDH, back on our show again (previously heard on episode 90)! We met up with her at the Yankee Dental Congress in very chilly Boston where we got to talking about how your office can stay on the up and up with technology and health care compliance. The big topic this episode is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which dictates how patient information is directed throughout the American health care system and protects that patient information from theft or fraud. Any dental office that processes patient medical and insurance information—so literally every dental office—needs to be compliant with HIPAA to ensure our patients are secure and that charts are properly archived and transmitted. In this episode, Ann Marie discusses the dos and don'ts of HIPAA compliance, how you can make your office as cyber-secure as possible, and making sure your fellow staff are fully trained on the software they're using. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: - Getting used to and properly using computer technology at the office to prevent accidental exposure of patient or clinic info. - The utmost importance of keeping patient-related emails encrypted when sending. - Get a professional for IT in your office, and why you should consider setting up two separate networks. - Some of the security violations Ann Marie has seen in her time and why they happened. - Why offices frequently fall behind technology training. - Should your office go paper-free or chart-free? - WATCH OUT FOR THE HIPAA POLICE. QUOTES: "Most practices are surviving in their software; they're not using it." "They're only using a very small portion of what technology can provide." Ep 164164 Employee or independent contractor? The 1099 breakdown with Olivia Wann

We're ecstatic to have dental compliance expert Olivia Wann, RD, JD back on our show again (hear her previously on episode 82)! The founder of Modern Practice Solutions is here to tackle a topic that becomes more and more important to cover the closer we approach tax season: employment status. Depending on how you were hired, it's possible that you're not an actual employee of your clinic but a long-term contractor. This discrepancy can severely complicate how much you owe the IRS come April 15, so Olivia wants both you and your boss to ensure that both you have proper employee status, just in case of an audit. Related to this, her clinic also offers the Intense Office Manager Course at her office in Tennessee one Friday per month. In this episode, Olivia breaks down the difference between being an employee and being a contractor, argues why you and your employer should be pushing for the latter, and explains how you can get everything in order for tax season. Thank you to Zirc.com for a great deal for ATOTH listeners! Listen to get your promo code for the Pink Petal or follow us on Instagram. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: - What technically separates an employee from a contractor, and why you need to figure out which category you're in. - Getting the 411 on the 1099 (form). - Why more hygienists qualify as employees rather than contractors. - The constructive way hygienists can ensure their clinic has hired them as an employee. - What you should do during tax season if you realize you've been misclassified - Make sure to get. Everything. In. Writing. QUOTES: "If the temp agency is employing the hygienist then the hygienist would be an employee of the temp agency, not the doctor." "That onboarding process needs to be evaluated to make sure that we're handling it correctly." "It's important that we sharpen our skills in office management and running businesses to be sure we're not violating any of the laws." "That 1099 is an independent contractor, and it involves a level of control the payer has or does not have over that worker." Ep 160160 Lifestyle Habits For a Healthier Patient with Dr Uche Odiatu

If you enjoyed hearing from Uche Odiatu on our recent TIPisode, then you'll be pumped to know that we recorded an even longer episode with him following the Yankee Dental Congress in Boston! Uche Odiatu is a Dentist, certified personal trainer, author, speaker and wellness expert. He strongly believes that the best treatment neither begins nor ends in the dentist's chair, and in fact extends to all corners of a patient's lifestyle—after all, the average person only spends a couple of hours per year with their dentist, and all the rest on their own care. In this jam-packed episode, Uche outlines four major out-of-office routines that can impact how well dental, orthodontic and airway treatments actually work, including physiology, sleep, diet and stress. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview starts: 4:10 - How sharing what you've learned can actually help you understand it even better. - Patient lifestyle habits that can derail the healing process or even the best dentist's intentions. - The benefit of gradually increasing your active physiology opposed to taking on a bunch of activities at once. - Finding kind and constructive ways to suggest physical activity to patients. - How disrupted sleep can disrupt the healing process, and why being a quick sleeper isn't as healthy as you think. - Discussing cost-effective techniques for addressing bad sleeping habits. - Coffee: a better source for fiber and life expectancy than you probably thought. - Setting realistic hydration goals. - How a deep nasal breath can reset your system when you're feeling stressed. - Letting your microbiome flourish to ensure better health. QUOTES: "I'd rather shoot for eight [thousand steps] realistically rather than beat myself up for not getting 10.""The only time your body's healing is at nighttime, and poor sleepers are often poor healers.""Falling asleep quick sounds like bragging rights, but it actually means that you're overtired.""We end up being better health care providers ourselves if we're good sleepers.""Whenever you've got the option to drink water, drink water.""Better down the hatch than from the hatch!""Microbiome impacts your health as much as your genes do." Dr. Josefine Ortiz Wolfe is a registered dental hygienist who writes and educates online and in person as The Informed Hygienist. She was kind to drop by on her way to a lecture in New York, and in this interview she stresses the importance of closing the gap between what professionals know and how that knowledge is actually put to work, connecting up-to-date dental research to clinical practice. In this bonus episode sponsored by Crest+Oral-B, Josefine discusses how even well-trained dentists and hygienists can fall behind current research, lists some resources you can use to keep on top of the latest knowledge, and suggests we fight back against the urge to pull a tooth rather than treat it. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Interview begins: 1:27 - Josephine's goal for her latest lecture and how she hopes it will benefit both practitioners and patients. - How the current standard of dental training means new practitioners unfortunately remain behind the times. - The tricky way our brain confuses what we instinctively know about dentistry with what we think we know. - Weeding out the unconscious biases that get in the way of accurate diagnoses and treatments. - Some strategies and resources for keeping up to date with the latest research and policies. - What to do when a patient pushes back against newer ideas with what they think is traditional and accepted. - Dealing with difference in opinion and suggested treatment between disparate medical fields. - The responsibility those in the dental field and related professions to provide the most accurate, up-to-date information to both clients and untrained staff. - Alternatives to tooth removal and why we shouldn't go right for the pliers. - Why treating the result of a disease isn't the same as treating the problem itself. - Not allowing an insurance policy get in the way of the most ethical, responsible treatment. Eventually, it's gonna be more dense, if that makes sense.""The thing I love about nanosilver is that you don't need to be a genius to hit the broad side of a barn.""The human body has got so many defense systems in place to prevent a lot of these things from developing.""Anytime you put something through a heated process and it's plastic, there's gonna be some no-nos that come out of that.""Ortho patients need interdental brushes, 100%.""You can't deny data."LINKS:The Biofilm Factor - http://thebiofilmfactor.com/Elementa Silver - https://elementasilver.com/ Elementa Silver on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=bl_dp_s_web_0?ie=UTF8&search-alias=aps&field-keywords=Elementa+Silver Elementa Silver on Instagram (@elementaoralcare) - https://www.instagram.com/elementaoralcare/?hl=en Ryan on Instagram (@ryannolandnd) - https://www.instagram.com/ryannolandmd/?hl=enThank you to Paradise Dental Technologies aka PDT for providing sponsorship for this episodes CE credits!THIS EPISODE COUNTS FOR CE! - but read the disclaimer below as it might not count for your state.Go here to take the test and get your CE Credit! https://www.cezoom.com/taketest/?courseid=3085&testid=1283 Approved Pace Program Provider FAGD/MAGD Credit Approval Does Not Imply Acceptance By A State Or Provincial Board of Dentistry Or AGD Endorsement. 1/1/18- 12/31/19 Provider #373236 Be sure to thank the sponsor for CE for this episode by heading over to www.PDTDental.com and picking up a new instrument or telling them thank you in person at one of the conferences!
