Ep 110Developing a Growth Mindset: Tony Stanger
"People will remember how you made them feel, not what you said."This week's conversation is with the man who scored the most famous try in Scottish rugby history – Tony Stanger. He touched the ball down to secure Scotland the Five Nations Grand Slam in 1990 against England. Since retiring – Tony spent 7 years developing talent through the Scottish institute of sport and now runs a company coaching people in business – using many of the lessons he has learnt from his life in sport. The theme of this conversation is about developing a growth mindset, and we talk about the power language and carefully calibrated questions, not letting what other people say and believe limit your own potential, the importance of self-regulation, how to promote the 5 key growth mindset behaviours and much more besides. Tony has studied Carol Dweck’s work on fixed and growth mindsets and written his own book factoring in many of its findings for parents specifically called Red Dot parenting.Tony's website: https://stangerpro.com/Red Dot parenting: https://stangerpro.com/product/red-dot-parenting/**A huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Ep 109Bitesize: Embracing difficult conversations - Kate & Helen Richardson-Walsh
bonusIt can be so easy to let resentments build and sweep things under the carpet, to avoid having the difficult conversation because you know it will be uncomfortable. But – sweeping issues under the carpet is not a recipe for harmony, whether in business, families, relationships of teams. Issues and feelings need to be faced and processed. Two people who are well aware of this are Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh who were part of the team that made history by becoming the first British women's side to win Olympic hockey gold at Rio 2016. A very challenging difficult conversation was fundamental for that squad to go on and make history in Brazil.Follow/message me:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 108Are you coming from Love or Fear? - Katie Warriner
"Why do we always have to be better than yesterday? If it's because you feel like you're not enough as you are - let's talk about that"Katie Warriner is a performance psychologist who has worked with a dazzling array of top sportspeople, including many of my previous guests. From the likes of Headspace Founder Andy Puudicombe through to the legendary Olympic gold medal winning hockey team of 2016 – including Kate and Helen Richardson Walsh, Alex Danson and Danny Kerry – as well as Laurence Halstead of the True Athlete Project. All of them say that Katie is an extraordinary psychologist, and after speaking to her – it is very clear why.The theme of this episode is about – are you coming from a place of love or fear? So, are you trying to achieve 'success' to become somebody special, in other words from a place of fear and lack, or are you doing what you are doing as an expression of love and exploration? We also discuss how the self-improvement path is ultimately a recognition that you were fine all along. And Katie questions the whole narrative of what success is – and why achievement in and of itself isn’t impressive, it’s asking yourself – how are you going to use that to contribute to the wellbeing of others and the world. And it won’t surprise you to hear that Katie joined forces with someone who has used his platform to do exactly that Marcus Rashford – to help write his book You are a Champion.Katie's world-class mindset development programme is here: https://www.moonshotseries.co.uk/Katie's clinic: https://www.theprimeclinic.co.uk/**A huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Ep 106Challenging the mainstream model of reality: Bernardo Kastrup
Do we really live in a fundamentally physical universe? Are we fundamentally physical beings? Most of us feel there is a world of stuff out there – trees, cars, buildings, clouds. People believe we are born into this world in the form of a body, which has a brain and a mind in it. BUT what if I was to suggest that this isn’t actually an accurate picture of what’s really going on? If that is the case, then what really IS the nature of reality? And something to bear in mind, science can tell us how reality behaves, it can't tell us what it is.Joining me for this episode is Bernardo Katsrup – who has two PhDs, one in computer science and another in philosophy. He was employed first at CERN, the European council for nuclear research, where he began working in artificial intelligence (AI) in connection with the Large Hadron Collider. Then he moved on to artificial consciousness (AC), wondering if he could build an artificially conscious entity, which piqued his interest in philosophy. Bernardo's books include Why Materialism Is Baloney.Alongside Bernardo is philosopher Rupert Spira, a teacher of non-duality and what’s known as 'the direct path'. Rupert and Bernardo come at the nature of reality from two different perspectives but – they arrive at the same conclusion. Rupert's books include Being Aware of Being Aware. The current widely accepted model of reality is called materialism or physicalism. But, most people accept materialism without really understanding what it means. In this episode, my guests explain materialism, point out its inconsistencies and incoherence, and provide a template of reality that does work. I would suggest this episode is one to listen to when you have time to concentrate on it.Rupert's website: https://rupertspira.com/welcomeBernardo's website: https://www.bernardokastrup.com/**Follow/message me:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 105Bitesize: The downside to chasing happiness - Jonny Wilkinson
bonusWe live in a goal-centric society, and we are always striving for more and bigger and better – but what about when you reach your goals and achieve your dreams – and the satisfaction and fulfilment you are expecting isn’t there? Then what?In this clip Jonny Wilkinson starts by talking about his World Cup winning drop goal of 2003, during which he experienced a dissolution of self - or that sense of me we are all familiar with - which would go on and shape Jonny’s philosophy and outlook many years later.**A huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Ep 104Gratitude: Thomas Hal Robson-Kanu
Thomas ‘Hal’ Robson-Kanu is the footballer who scored probably Wales’ most famous goal of all time against Belgium in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016. The theme of this episode is the power of gratitude. And we are not just talking about being grateful for the good things that happen to you – but being grateful for every moment, irrespective of its content. From the sheer miracle of existence and the human body – through to being accepting of - and grateful for - adversity. We also talk about not looking outside ourselves for fulfilment, success, approval and happiness… as well as the power of bringing awareness to our thoughts and feelings, and the impact they have. While Thomas hasn’t officially hung up his Premier League boots, he does have another focus in the form of his own health drink company, the Turmeric Co. It was inspired by his own significant adversity and injury troubles as a teenager.**Finally, a huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Ep 103Bitesize: Stop putting people on pedestals - John Barnes
bonusWe have a tendency to put people on pedestals – successful sportspeople, celebrities, businesspeople – and there’s no doubt that what some people are able to create can be phenomenal. But, it is a mistake to project Godlike status onto such people, as if they really are a superior species. They are fallible human beings like the rest of us. I call this ‘the illusion of mental hierarchies’, and seeing through it is so valuable as you stop believing that some people are more important or valuable than you, and that you are more important than anyone else. So many of us are striving to prove that we are someone special – but we just need to recognise that we are all equally special, and always have been. To illustrate this one is former Liverpool and England footballer John Barnes. ****Ps. Please do share this episode with anyone you think might benefit. Hormones are the internal chemical messengers that have a powerful influence on our mental and physical wellbeing. When your hormone levels are balanced, you will tend to have stable moods and feel energetic, motivated, and mentally sharp. But - when hormone levels are out of whack, you may experience a range of symptoms that are also commonly associated with mental illness like depression. There may be anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, low motivation, low libido, difficulty concentrating… the list goes on. And – often people don’t realise it is the imbalance in their hormones that are causing the problems. To talk us through all this is Dr Nicky Keay – a hormone expert who has lent that expertise to the likes of the International Olympic Committee and regularly contributes to publications including the British Journal of Sports Medicine In this episode we discuss:What causes our hormones to be disruptedThe lifestyle factors we can adopt to get them in syncWhen we need to start paying attention to our hormonal healthThe key sex hormones - testosterone and estrogenTestosterone replacement therapy and HRT - pros and consThe importance of resistance trainingThe dangers of excessive cardioWhy we all should be taking vitamin D supplementationWhy our sex-hormones need carbohydratesWhy hormones love routineSo-called 'adrenal fatigue'Avoiding processed foodsSocial connection and its positive impact on hormonesThe perimenopause and menopause - and how to mitigate its effectsBeing proactive rather than reactive with our healthForth's private home blood tests are here: https://www.forthwithlife.co.uk/I hope you find this episode useful – if you do please can you share it – as that does make a big difference. **Follow/message me:Instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com (where you can also drop me an email)Please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 101Bitesize: Creating opportunities - with Sir Chris Hoy
bonusThe theme of this mini episode is all about creating opportunities for yourself. Sir Chris Hoy started in BMX before switching to track cycling, but a key moment in his career came when the cost of pursuing his passion was starting to bite while he was still a young lad.Rather than let that deter him, Chris got creative – and wrote letter after letter to people and companies he thought might be able to sponsor him. What followed was rejection after rejection – before eventually someone had a nibble, and gave Chris the all important backing to kick on and eventually have his hall of fame cycling career. The message in what Chris says is so important – don’t wait for opportunities to come to you, go out and create them yourself. This follows on nicely from yesterday's episode about 'Squiggly Careers' - and Hoy's approach to creating opportunities is particularly beneficial in the workplace.**Ps. Ep 99Happiness by Design: Paul Dolan
This conversation is about recognising that the stories and narratives we tell ourselves about what should make us happy – high status, millions of social media followers, billions in the bank – are often inaccurate. Instead – we need to start paying attention to what does make us happy – for example, spending time with friends, connection, pro-social acts of kindness and altruism, playing sport, listening to music … the list goes on.Paul Dolan is a behavioural scientist and author of the bestselling book Happiness By Design and Happy Ever After. His motto? "Do things that bring you pleasure or purpose. If they don't - stop doing them."So, in this episode we discuss:Letting go of stories and paying attention to our experiencesHow willpower is weak but design power is strong – what that means and how you can harness it in your own lifeWhy you need to put your phone away and stop recording at gigs and festivals (it interrupts your 'flow of experience')Reaching narratives - and how the belief that X in the future will make us happy is an illusionWhy pro-social acts need to be celebratedWhy we should spend time designing our lives to increase the amount of time spent doing things that provide pleasure or purposeThe power of environment and how to harness itThe importance of acceptance and recognising we are all fallible human beingsAnd much more!**Warning** this episode contains swearing and adult themesPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 98Bitesize: The problem with positive self-talk, self-esteem and affirmations - with Dr. Russ Harris
bonusWe are not our thoughts, we are aware of our thoughts. The more we can acknowledge this fact, the less emphasis we put on the need for 'high self-esteem' and 'positive self-talk'. To help me bust some myths is the best-selling author of the Confidence Gap and the Happiness Trap. And just a warning - if you stand in front of the mirror and do positive self-affirmations, this episode might get you to stop. Russ is one of the world's leading experts on Acceptance and Commitment therapy, which can have a profound impact on your wellbeing and -crucially - your relationship with your mind, your thoughts and your feelings.**My book Champion Thinking: How To Find Success Without Losing Yourself draws on some of my favourite interviews over the last six years. Ep 97Winning does not change who you are: Cath Bishop
What is a price worth paying for a gold medal? That's a question that Cath Bishop seeks to answer in her work. Cath is a former World Champion British rower who won silver at the Olympics. She was also a diplomat and is now a leadership speaker, writer and consultant. Her book 'The Long Win' challenged the narrative around 'winning at all costs'. After competing at three Olympics - a period of her life she found draining at times - Cath reflected and realised that the cultural obsession with winning came at a big cost - to competitors, supporters and society. She is now pushing for a change in attitude - from 'conquering' to 'collaboration'. She wrote a brilliant article for the Guardian off the back of the Winter Olympics - which led to us recording this conversation.ARTICLE: https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2022/feb/21/kamila-valieva-horror-show-price-olympic-gold-too-high - the articlehttps://cathbishop.com/ - Cath's website**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 96Bitesize: Professionalism - with Wales and Lions legend Sam Warburton

Ep 95Surrendering to life's challenges: Stevie Ward
We like to think we know what will happen, but we don't actually know what will happen an hour from now let alone in a years time.Stevie Ward burst onto the rugby league scene as a teenager, helping Leeds Rhinos win the challenge cup final in 2012. But, his career was blighted by injury. He had 10 operations – all before turning 27. He had just been made Leeds Rhinos Captain and was reaching the pinnacle of career, but concussion on opening weekend of 2020 season stopped him in his tracks. Stevie announced his retirement in January of last year because of the severe side effects of his brain injury, including migraines, sensitivity to light and screens and memory issues, which continue to this day. In this episode we discuss surrender, acceptance, the difference between success and fulfilment as well as Stevie’s own 'Dark Night of the Soul.' experience. In 2016, Stevie launched Mantality after experiencing depression and anxiety with all the highs and lows he was going through. Mantality offers coaching and counselling to people struggling with their mental health. You can check out the excellent work they do at www.mantality.co.ukFollow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 94Bitesize: Finding inner peace by living our values - with Professor Steve Peters
bonusWe live in a very goal-orientated society. So many of us are continually striving and thinking - 'what’s next?' We may believe that when we get promoted at work, move into a bigger house or finally get a six pack – THEN we will be happy. However, you may have noticed that the horizon we are striving for always seems to stay just out of reach. Once one goal is ticked off – we want another one, ideally bigger – and so the sense of inner satisfaction we are really looking for is perpetually elusive.Clearly there is nothing wrong with goals, they are important. But, they are by definition in the future, whereas our values are how we want to be in the world from moment to moment. And there is good research that shows the more we live in accordance with our values, the higher sense of wellbeing we are likely to experience. One person I spoke to about values was Professor Steve Peters who came up with the Chimp Model - a metaphor for how we think, than helped many elite sportspeople from Ronnie O'Sullivan through to Victoria Pendleton and Steven Gerrard.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 93Peak Performance: Alistair Brownlee
Alistair Brownlee is the only triathlete in history to successfully defend an Olympic gold medal – he won his first at London 2012 and backed it up by repeating the trick in Rio in 2016. He is also a two-time world champion, a four-time European champion and the 2014 Commonwealth championBasically - Alistair's trophy cabinet is overflowing. The theme of this week’s conversation is – peak performance. We discuss a number of topics including - the power of instinct and flow, as well as the importance of preparation and letting go. We cover taking calculated risks, how you don’t need to feel confident to be successful and how a lack of connection can lead to burnout – something many people can relate to over the last couple of years of lockdowns and remote working, as well as Alistair's book called Relentless.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 92Fear Less, Live more: Aimee Fuller
Aimee Fuller has a lot to say about fear. She is a former professional snowboarder who made history as the first woman to land a double backflip in competition and competed in two Winter Olympics. In this episode, we talk about her two Ps for dealing with fear, preparation and perspective, Aimee's ladder of excitement as well as flow, where we are totally immersed in the moment – among many other things. In 2019, Aimee fronted the documentary Running in North Korea, which shows her running her first-ever marathon in one of the most isolated countries in the world. The winter Olympics got underway a few days ago in Beijing – and Aimee is a big part of the BBCs broadcasting coverage on TV. Ep 91Bitesize: How to set goals
bonusHow to set goals properly, by focusing on what we can control and recognising what we can’t. Also – it’s about understanding the truth behind that famous Einstein quote about insanity, which he defined as ‘doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.’We’re hearing from Olympic gold medal winning rower Ben Hunt Davis. He competed in three Olympic games and in the first two – in 1992 and 1996, he finished way outside the medals. A couple of years before the 2000 Olympics, he and his teammates had an epiphany: they needed to change HOW they were doing things. That prompted them to identify a goal – winning Olympic gold – while recognising that winning wasn’t something they could control directly. What they could focus on to give themselves the best chance of success was boat speed – prompting them to formulate a question that has since entered sporting folklore… ‘Will it make the boat go faster’? **Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 90Radical vulnerability: Max Lowe
Max Lowe is a filmmaker whose father was Alex Lowe – the greatest mountain climber of his generation. Days before Max’s 11th birthday, his father Alex was killed in an avalanche while on expedition in the Tibetan Himalaya. Alex Lowe’s best friend and climbing partner Conrad Anker escape from the avalanche with his life – but was left wracked with survivor’s guilt. He headed back to the States, compelled to help look after Alex’s three sons.Conrad then ended up failing in love with - and eventually marrying - Alex’s widow, Jennifer. He also adopted Alex's three boys, the eldest of whom is Max. 17 years later, two climbers attempting the same route in the Tibetan Himalaya discovered Alex’s body. Max, Conrad and the rest of the family flew out to recover his remains. That journey was hugely impactful, and the trauma that had laid buried in Max – and his younger brothers - for all those years also rose to the surface. Max then set out to make a documentary film about what happened – called Torn, in which he and the rest of his family examine those long buried feelings. It turns out to be a painful but ultimately cathartic experience that clearly illustrates the power of radical vulnerability.Max recognised that to release his trauma – he first needed to face it and share it. It’s a lesson so many people can learn from… and it was a pleasure talking to Max about it.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 89Bitesize: Thinking Correctly Under Pressure - with Sir Clive Woodward
bonusSir Clive Woodward's favourite mantra has to be 'TCUP'- Thinking Correctly Under Pressure. It's about thinking through potential hurdles so that when things do go awry - you are better equipped to be able to navigate them. Sir Clive's England showed the power of TCUP when winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup at the death. Clearly the possible unexpected scenarios that you could face are limitless - the pandemic has shown that - but it is the process of thinking through possible eventualities that is key. Ep 88Calming anxiety: Chloe Brotheridge
Rates of anxiety were rising rapidly before the pandemic – and have shot up since the world changed in 2020. In 2021, 'anxiety' was chosen by children as their word of the year. It’s clearly a huge issue. One of the most powerful tools to counter anxiety is a counter-intuitive one – acceptance. So many of us distract ourselves from our feelings - not least with the help of our digital devices - but distraction is not a long-term solution. We need to move towards our feelings, not away from them.Chloe and I discuss exposure therapy too – which is basically gradually expanding your comfort zone – as well as other tools including non-violent communication, something I have spoken about in a recent newsletter.Plus – we share our shared belief that we are born with an innate sense of wellbeing and peace – but we lose sight of it as we age and the thinking mind comes online adding a layer of judgements, predictions and concepts**For Chloe's 'Calmer You' website - which is full of free resources - head to https://calmer-you.com/Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieFor the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and over 170 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 87Bitesize: Keep going - with Joe Wicks
Just how did Joe Wicks harness the power of social media to become the 'Nation's PE teacher'? It's all about authenticity, consistency - and ignoring the naysayers. When Joe started posting content in 2014, there was no master plan. He just loved doing it. His mates told him to give the videos a rest, but he ploughed on and eventually broke through. It's a story that is often repeated in seeming 'overnight successes' - that ability to keep on going when the rewards are not forthcoming and people are telling you that you are flogging a dead horse, to be consistent and - crucially - authentic.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. Ep 85Bitesize: Trusting your intuition
bonus"Intuition is a powerful thing. More powerful than intellect." - Steve Jobs"The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift." - Albert EinsteinThe power of intuition is a difficult thing to quantify, but numerous hugely 'successful' people have sworn by it. In this week's full length conversation, Jimmy Chin spoke about how he chose to follow his intuition against the wishes of his parents. It led him to becoming a celebrated athlete, photographer and Oscar winning film Director, which he never invisaged happening. In this episode we here from Ironman triathlon legend Chrissie Wellington, who has followed her intuition throughout her life. bonusHow walking more will boost your brain, body and creativity with professor Shane O'Mara. Most of us do it - but almost all of us don’t walk enough. It's hardly news that we are, as a species, too sedentary, and that has only increased since the pandemic hit. Ep 81How to have difficult conversations: Tim Harkness
We live in highly polarised times, where largely impenetrable tribes have formed around certain beliefs and world views – so having a guide to help us communicate effectively with people who don’t share our opinions is priceless.Tim Harkness does a great job at outlining how to navigate the difficult conversations that persistently have negative effects in our personal and professional lives. He’s the author of the excellent book ’10 rules for talking: An expert’s guide to mastering difficult conversations.’After going through Tim’s ten rules, we then road test them by discussing a subject in which we take differing views, and happily I can confirm we don’t fall out. Ep 79Belonging: Owen Eastwood
Owen Eastwood is one of the world’s top performance coaches. He worked alongside Gareth Southgate as England prepared for this year's Euros, and Team GB ahead of this summer's Olympics. He's also worked with the Scotland rugby squad, the South African cricket team, as well as the royal ballet school and the command group of NATO. Owen set out the thinking behind his success in his excellent book Belonging – the ancient code of togetherness. He shares ideas around belonging, the power of a shared vision and even the spiritual wisdom of his ancestors. He also talks about 'Whakapapa' - a fundamental principle of New Zealand Maori culture, which links people to all their ancestors who went before them.Owen was born in New Zealand and is half English – half Maori. Ep 77Embracing values and compassion: Laurence Halsted
Laurence Halsted - who competed at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics in fencing and was a European silver medalist - believes sport is falling short of its potential. The pervasive 'win at all costs' mentality has led to problems like doping, corruption, inhumane training cultures and mental health difficulties among athletes at all levels. Laurence argues that a significant issue is the failure of sportspeople and organisations to identify - and then live in accordance with – their deeper values, and embrace a compassionate approach to life. Laurence has written a book called 'Becoming a True Athlete – a practical philosophy for flourishing through sport,' that is a manifesto for how sport and its participants can rise above the status quo. Laurence is also a key member of the True athlete Project (TAP), one of the most interesting organisations in sport. Its goal is to help create a more compassionate world by harnessing the undoubted power of sport for good. The True Athlete Project: https://www.thetrueathleteproject.org/***Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally, a huge thanks to my sponsors, Puresport. Ep 75Self-Awareness: Amy Williams MBE
Amy Williams MBE became the first British athlete to win Gold at a Winter Olympics in 30 years at Vancouver 2010. Her event was Skeleton - which basically involves lying face down on a small sled, hurtling down an icy track at speeds upwards of 80 miles an hour. Not for the faint of heart. It took self-awareness for Amy to climb to the top of her chosen sport. Describing herself as shy and introverted, Amy stepped out of her comfort zone to even start Skeleton, and then worked hard at building her confidence and reducing the pressure she put herself under whilst still embracing her sensitivity. She stopped comparing herself to other people (a habit we would all do well to dispense with to some degree) and took notes in a journal every day, seeking those small improvements that add up and make all the difference over the long term. Amy has a fantastic new book out called Talent to Triumph, and we discuss many of the key themes in this conversation. Ep 74Bitesize: Put Your Phone Away
bonusWe live in the age of the smartphone. While there are huge benefits to this, it also comes at a cost. We are more distracted and our brains are not getting the opportunity to power down as they need to. But also, it is having a significant impact on the quality of our communication and our relationships. A simple tip then - put your phone away when possible when you are in company. Going out for dinner? Leave your phone in ypur pocket or bag rather than face down on the table. Research shows even just having your phone in eyeshot can have a negative impact on the quality of your communication. Who better to learn from on this than Didier Deschamps - France's National manager and one of only two male footballers to have won the World Cup as player captain and team manager.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally a shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodesWhether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Pure Sport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics. Ep 72Trauma: Jason Fox
Jason Fox is a former marine who was discharged from the army with PTSD. After coming close to suicide, Foxy started 'looking inwards' to process his trauma and work on rediscovering a childlike love of living in the present. The work he did was hugely rewarding, and since recovering he has gone on to forge a hugely successful career in the media, as star of 'SAS: Who Dares Wins' as well as on Netflix’s 'Inside the Real Narcos'. He is also the author of books including Battle Scars - which looks back in detail on his mental health difficulties and subsequent recovery - and Life Under Fire. In this episode we discuss what trauma is, the benefit of 'doing the work', and why learning to stop identifying with the voice in our head is vital. Foxy is vulnerable, honest and open, and he’s now part of Mentor 360 - which is an interesting new app that helps people become more self-aware and develop healthy new habits. Ep 71Lite episode: Facing anxiety
bonusAnxiety is a very common experience, and clearly an uncomfortable one. The typical response to the feeling of anxiety in our bodies - and the accompanying racing thoughts - is to try and get rid of them, or distract ourselves from them. The problem is that may actually add fuel to the fire and perpetuate the feelings. If instead we can be brave enough to turn and face the feelings directly - not as a way to get rid of them - but with genuine curiosity and compassion, then we can lessen their power over us. To help explain more is neuroscientist, philosopher and creator of the Waking Up app Sam Harris.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 160 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcastsThe full episode with Sam is here: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-self-delusion-sam-harris/id1564063336?i=1000535944946***Finally a shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodesWhether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Pure Sport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics. Ep 70Leadership: Eddie Jones
What are the keys to good leadership? According to England Rugby Head Coach Eddie Jones, it's about setting a vision and working backwards, planning well, being adaptable and inspirational - which can simply stem from the way you care for people. Clear and concise communication is key, as is being a keen observer of what is happening around you and making sure your team masters the basics. Eddie Jones is one of England's most successful head coaches, having led his team to a Grand Slam, a calendar year undefeated (only the second team in history to achieve the feat) and the 2019 World Cup final. He has confirmed he will be leaving his post after the 2023 World Cup, at which point he will have been England's longest serving Head Coach. Eddie also shares gems on what we could all learn from Japanese culture - in particular leaving a place better off than when you arrived, which is Eddie's prime aim as England boss.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 160 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally a shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodesWhether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Pure Sport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics. Ep 69Lite Lesson: Being True to Yourself
bonusWhy being true to yourself is vital to both success and happiness. It is easy to try and fit the mould of how we think we should act - particularly at work, but in any and all life situations. Often that means conforming to how we imagine others think we should be, taking us into the risky realm of 'mind-reading'. The answer? Be yourself as fully as you can be, not least because - as the cliche goes - you are unique. It's the best way to truly stand out and make a good impression. Former Wales captain Sam Warburton embraced this to great effect during his career.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and I would be very grateful if you could rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally a shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodesWhether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Pure Sport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics. Ep 68Challenging the Champion Narrative: Dr Amy Izycky
Everyone knows the mainstream narrative around elite athletes – that they are superhumans capable of achieving the truly incredible. True in many ways – but perhaps not the whole story. What if - in many cases - the drive required to become the best in the world comes from a place of internal disquiet? Dr Amy Izycky is a clinical psychologist and psychodynamic psychotherapist with a major interest in sport and author of the paradigm shifting book Skewed To The Right – Sport, Mental Health and Vulnerability. This episode starts with a premise - that we all need a loving gaze from our parents or caregivers as babies and children. Without it we may internalise a belief that there is 'something missing' - which leads us on a search to fill that void by finding it in the outside world - an unsustainable pursuit. That may be in a relationship, a car, a promotion... or an Olympic gold medal. In this epiosde we also talk about changing the narrative around mental health from 'It's okay not to be okay' - true of course - to 'It's okay to do the work to be ok'***Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comAnd please do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts***Finally a shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodesWhether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Pure Sport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics. Ep 67Lite Lesson: Imposter Syndrome
bonusImposter sydrome is where we feel like a fraud and don't deserve the success that comes our way. It is often accompanied by uncomfortable feelings like anxiety and thoughts like "I'm not good enough" or "I don't deserve to be here". The key insight from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is that uncomfortable thoughts and feelings are normal and to be expected. It is our desire to get rid of them, or to not recognise them for what they are - simply thoughts and feelings that come and go irrespective of their content - that is the problem. To help explain more is the world's best-selling ACT teacher Dr Russ Harris - author of The Confidence Gap and The Happiness Gap. The more we can make space for all thoughts and feelings aand recognise that we are aware of them and don't have to battle them, suppress them or buy into their storylines - the more freedom we have to act in accordance with out values.***Follow me:Book: https://www.simonmundie.com/bookWebsite: simonmundie.comYouTube: https://tinyurl.com/YouTubeSimonMundieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/Substack Newsletter: https://simonmundie.substack.com/ Hosted on Acast. John Barnes is a former Liverpool, Watford and England footballer who would like people to think hard about discrimination and its origins. He has a new book out - The Uncomfortable Truth about Racism - which explores the human propensity for creating illusory hierarchies in our minds and putting people on pedastals. Ep 65Lite Lesson: The futility of seeking peace in the future
bonusDo you believe you will be happy and fulfilled at some point in the future - perhaps when you get the right job, relationship or house?Or maybe you will find lasting fulfilment when you do something really special - like win a World Cup...Jonny Wilkinson reached the pinnacle of his sport in 2003 aged 24, when he kicked England to World Cup glory. But, rather than being left with a sense of lasting peace and fulfilment by fulfilling his ultimate goal, Wilkinson's body and mind soon began to suffer. It eventually led him to question whether inner peace could be found in objects and activities in the outside world.**The full conversation with Jonny Wilkinson is here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/obsession-jonny-wilkinson/id1564063336?i=1000519823758Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com**And a big shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodes.Whether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Puresport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics.Check out their amazing products at puresportcbd.com and get 20% off by using the code Life20 at checkout. Professor BJ Fogg is one of the world's top experts when it comes to behaviour change. He has spent 20 years researching and teaching insights about human behaviour, and is the author of the New York Times best-seller Tiny Habits: The Small Changes That Change Everything. In this episode, we discuss why forming a new habit doesn't take place in a certain number of days. The research shows repetition has nothing to do with it, and willpower isn't a factor either. The key is to tap into emotion - and in particular the feeling of being successful. That's how to wire a behaviour in and make it automatic. In this conversation, BJ and I discuss the specific process to form a new habit, and how to unravel ones you would rather do without. BJ Fogg's work has helped huge numbers of people around the world make significant and impactful changes in their own lives - and he can do it for you too.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring the best Life Lessons from over three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com to sign up.**And a big shoutout to my sponsors whose support enables me to put out weekly episodes.Whether you are anxious, stressed, struggling to focus or sleep – there’s something for everyone in Puresport CBD's brilliant range of oils, capsules, balms and nootropics.Check out their amazing products at puresportcbd.com and get 20% off by using the code Life20 at checkout. Ep 63Lite Lesson: When to eat and get natural light each day
bonusWhy when we eat may be more important than what we eat. PLUS - why going outside to get natural light in the first half of the day helps a multitude of things including your mood and your sleep, while getting blue light at night - from your phone for example - has the opposite effect. Will Greenwood is one of England's greatest ever rugby players. He played centre and was a key member of the 2003 World Cup winning side. His crucial try helped turn the game when England were trailing Wales in the quarter-finals, and one of the most memorable photos taken after England were crowned champions feautured Will and Jonny Wilkinson in a euphoric embrace. It has been nearly twenty years since England won the World Cup, and in that time Will says he has evolved hugely as a person. You could say his focus has gone from 'me' to 'we', a natural evolution for many of us over the course of a lifetime, although in Will's case it has been sped along by his experiences in sport, in business and in everyday life. Among other nuggets, Will emphasises the importance of kindness, 'radical acceptance' and careful use of language - subjects he touches on in his new book 'World Class: How to Lead, Learn and Grow like a Champion'**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comHosted on Acast. Ep 60The cruelty of addiction: Paul Merson
Paul Merson – the ex Arsenal, Villa and England footballer turned Soccer Saturday regular has battled issues for years with drink, drugs and gambling, which he considers to be the cruellest of the lot.Paul is currently clean and doing his bit to help others – not least through his new book Hooked: Addiction and the Long Road to Recovery. It’s a stark and at times brutal account of the damage addiction can reek, and in this episode we talk about what Paul has learnt along that long road to recovery. From learning not to identify with the addictive voice in your head, to learning to sit with uncomfortable thoughts and feelings – as well as the importance of opening up and talking about your problems.Addiction affects so many people – so if you know someone who might benefit from listening to this conversation please do share it with them.If you are new to the show and want to learn more about addiction, I’d suggest listening to my earlier episode with Tony Adams – founder of the sporting chance clinic, or I’d recommend my conversation with Dr Russ Harris – who shares powerful techniques any of us can use to relate to difficult thoughts and feelings like anxiety or anger in a more skillful and effective way**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and more than 150 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.com**Tony Adams: https://play.acast.com/s/dont-tell-me-the-score-with-simon-mundie/addiction-tonyadamsDr. Russ Harris on managing uncomfortable thoughts and feelings: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/dont-tell-me-the-score-life-lessons-from-sport-and-beyond/id1564063336?i=1000524427763Hosted on Acast. Ep 59Life Lesson: self-enquiry
bonusEverything you experience - like thoughts, feelings, sensations and perceptions - come and go.
