Hey folks, this week we’re making accessibility buttons for the Adafruit PyGamer. These buttons are 3d printed with the braille alphabet so folks can touch and feel the buttons. We made a full set of these button caps to press fit over the PyGamer switches. They’re are printed flat side down with the stem facing up. All buttons in this kit fit on the bed of the 3D printer and only took a half hour. Adafruit PyGamer https://www.adafruit.com/product/4242 350mAh battery https://www.adafruit.com/product/4237 Mini Oval Speaker https://www.adafruit.com/product/4227 The braille alphabet will be printed on little cover pieces and super glued on top. The alphabet consists of dots in a 2 by 3 configuration. These dots are quite small but we were able to fit them on buttons with a diameter of 9mm. Each cover piece has it’s own set of dots so you can pick and place any letter you like. To remove the parts from the bed, I like to use a razor blade. Just need to carefully get the edge of the blade underneath the part without scratching the bed. While picking out the covers, it might be a bit tricky to make out the alphabet so I suggest a cheat sheet. so you’ll need to be cautious of the orientation when placing the covers. Just a small drop of superglue is all it needs to bond to the caps. Once you get them on you can test out the button presses and get a feel for the dots. Each button can have different sounds so you can build your own sample kit. All of the electronics are housed in our 3D printed enclosure. The top and bottom covers snap fit so it’s easy to put together. It’s designed to be portable, compact device and it’s open source. In previous build we used several boards to make a similar project. For this one we can use Adafruit’s Feather and the Prop Maker Feather Wing. Check out the learn guide for documentation. You can follow along step by step to wire the electronics and build the assembly. You Can Shake the device to shuffle the audio. Pressing the button on the side will reset the arrangement. We think it’s a fun demo of what you can with the accelerometer. In this project we're building a rig for installing heat set inserts. Use 3D printed parts and hardware to build a solder rig with smooth linear roller action! Make perfectly straight inserts with precision using a tip for installing inserts. Learn guide: https://learn.adafruit.com/heat-set-rig/ When working with 3D printed parts, a press can help you install inserts. This holds a soldering iron vertically and allows you to press down, perfectly straight. The tip of the iron heats up the brass and softens the plastic. Pressing down pushes the insert into the part and once it cools down, it’s locked in place. This could be handy for folks doing a small production run or if you're looking for a tool to make this easier. This rig makes installing inserts feel like pressing a hot knife through butter – The linear motion on this build feels smooth. This is definitely over engineered and we spent way too much time on it but we think folks will find it useful. The rig is modular and uses common hardware – The 3d printed parts can be remixed and modified to work with other components. There’s a learn guide for this project so folks can build their own. Holding the iron straight seems simple enough and works fine most of the time but the conical shape of a regular soldering iron tip can catch the insert and accidentally pull it out while melting the plastic – And that can sometimes ruin parts. Build a mini mac with HalloWing that displays boot screen actually plays startup chimes! It uses the Adafruit HalloWing M0 Express and runs Circuit Python. The capacitive touch pads cycling through images and sounds stored on device. Circuit Python makes it easy to display images on TFT displays. The HalloWing PCB snap fits onto the face plate without any screws. A mini speaker plugs into the audio port on the back.
