Speaking of a skill that I learnt in math, the one that immediately comes to mind is using statistic methods to calculate the likelihood of things happening. During my undergraduate study, we had this course called advanced mathematics. It was a very demanding course as it was difficult and a lot of students fail to pass its exam every year. The reason I took this course was not because I love math or anything, it was because this was a compulsory subject and I had to pass it in order to graduate. This course was particularly lengthy as it expands through 4 semesters, and in the fourth semester we learnt to calculate probability. We started with very simple ideas such as calculating the chances of getting “one”s when rolling a dice, and then moved on to more sophisticated ideas such as testing the likelihood of something based on its samples. And in order to inspire us, my teacher back then shared a news with us, about a few math professionals using probability calculations to win gambling games. It is said that these professionals collected data on race horses and bet on horses that they assumed to have the greatest chance to win. And this won them huge amount of fortune. Of course I don’t gamble ,but I use the probability methods to analyze the information I receive and I have been able to spot rumors and identify useful information, which is of great help!

What is the difference between reading anovel and watching a movie that is based on a novel? Reading a book, what you acquire from thenovel is just ideas. That gives you plenty of room for imagination. For example, when the author describes the appearance of the protagonist, he may use a lotof adjectives or comparisons. But you will never be able to picture what theperson really looks like. And every reader has his own version of the look ofthe characters in the book. In contrast, a movie based on a novel has alreadybeen interpreted by the playwright, the director as well as the actors. It givesyou all the images and sounds, intangible feelings. To a large extent, thecharm of the book has diminished. But, of course, there is a reason why peoplenowadays prefer movies rather than books, which is they lead such a fast-paced lifethat they are too scatterbrained to immerse in the books.

If boys are better at learning science than girls do, what should theschools do? Supposedly, in order to offset this kind of imbalance, schools shoulddivide the students into different classes by gender and then apply differentteaching methodologies. But this could trigger the rage of the female students, since it could be viewed as a discriminative practice. The girls might have theconception that they are inferior to the boys, and then become even morediffident in science learning, which is a very heavy backfire. Hence, I believethe best way to deal with this situation is to leave it this way.
