1001 Sherlock Holmes Stories & The Best of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

For American radio, the heroine of Holmes on the radio was Edith Meiser, an actress who loved the stories and was convinced they would make great listening. She scripted several Conan Doyle stories and took them around. Meiser entrepreneured a fitting sponsorship for the show herself, and went back to the network triumphantly. Beginning in the early 1930s, she single handed wrote the show for over a dozen years, first working from the Conan Doyle canon, and then continuing to create stories in the spirit of the originals.

Sherlock Holmes is an American radio show broadcasted between 28 september 1947 and 6 june 1949 on Mutual and ABC, starring John Stanley as Sherlock Holmes and Alfred Shirley (e. 1-39), Ian Martin (ep. 40-43), Geroge Spelvin (ep. 44-78) as Dr. Watson. Produced by Basil Loughrane, written by Edith Meiser (ep. 1-39) and by Howard Merrill & Max Erhlich (ep. 40-78), announced by Cy Harrice and sponsored by Trimount Clothing Co. (Clipper Craft Clothes). When Basil Rathbone left the long 1939-1946 radio series, Nigel Bruce remained as Watson but with Tom Conway as Sherlock Holmes between 1946-1947. However, the audience didn't like it very much (it lasts after 38 episodes). So a new actor was chosen to replace Sherlock Holmes. John Stanley was found and Alfred Shirley was chosen as a new Watson. The shows were broadcastedon sundays 7pm-7.30pm (from 12 september 1948 to 26 december 1948) and on mondays 8.30pm-9pm (from 3 january 1949 to 6 june 1949).

In this story which Doyle also wrote as a one act play, a small military post occupied by a multinational group of civilians, nurses, and soldiers during the Boxer rebellion is threatened with being overrun by the Chinese. Certain members of the group, fearing capture, consider what they would do to avoid cruel deaths at the hands of the Chinese. "The Adventure of the Three Garridebs" is one of the 56 Sherlock Holmes short stories written by British author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. One of the 12 stories in the cycle collected as The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes (1927),[1] it was first published in Collier's in the United States on 25 October 1924, and in The Strand Magazine in the United Kingdom in January 1925. According to Dr. Watson's opening narration, this story is set at "the latter end of June, 1902 ... the same month that Holmes refused a knighthood for services which may perhaps some day be described." This is a parallel to the knighthood of Arthur Conan Doyle around the same time.

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a radio drama series which aired in the USA from 1939 to 1950, it ran for 374 episodes, with many of the later episodes considered lost media. The series was based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Some of the surviving episode recordings may be found online, in various audio quality condition. For most of the show's run, the program starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson, reprising their popular film portrayals. Other actors played Holmes and Watson in later seasons. Production From the outset of the show, the series was billed in different listings under various titles including Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, and other titles. The most popularly remembered title is The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. From 1939 until 1943, episodes were adapted or written by Edith Meiser who had written the earlier series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which aired from 1930 to 1935. Meiser left the show after disagreements with a sponsor over the amount of violence in the program. It is also reported that Meiser left the show to focus on other projects. From 1943 onward, most episodes were written by the team of Denis Green and Anthony Boucher with some early episodes written by Green and Leslie Charteris. Edith Meiser returned to write for the show for its seventh season. Max Ehrlich and Howard Merrill wrote the episodes of season 8. Denis Green returned as a writer for the last season. Originally, the show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson. Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher". He was eager to separate himself from the show to avoid being typecast in the role. Tom Conway replaced him in the starring role, though Nigel Bruce got top billing and was always announced first. The new series lasted 39 episodes, and Bruce and Conway then left the series. From then until 1950 the series continued with various actors playing the two principal parts. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System. The show moved to Mutual in 1943 at the start of its fourth season. The series was originally broadcast from Hollywood. During World War II, the show was also broadcast overseas through the Armed Forces Radio Service. The program aired on ABC instead of Mutual for its sixth and ninth seasons. Season 9 (September 21, 1949 – June 14, 1950; 39 episodes) started with an episode with an unknown title. The second episode, which aired on September 28, 1949, was titled "The Eloquent Corpse". Many of this season's episodes, including the last two episodes, have unknown titles. The last episode with a known title is "Command Performance", which aired on May 31, 1950.[2] Scripts of some missing episodes have been published by Purview Press. 'Sherlock Holmes:The Lost Radio Scripts' (ISBN 978-1617094729), 'Sherlock Holmes: More Lost Radio Scripts' (ISBN 978-1617095351) edited by Ian Dickerson.

Two great Sherlock Classics done a little differently (and better than most) by award winning John Stanley (1948)

Two great episodes from South African Springbok Radio featuring Sherlock Holmes mysteries- Enjoy! Stories of Sherlock Holmes ran on South African 'Springbok Radio' in the early 1980's. It starred Graham Armitage as Sherlock and Kerry Jordan as Watson. Watson is no longer the bumbling mumbling Watson of Nigel Bruce. The stories do not attempt to stick to the original Conan Doyle canon.

Season 7 (September 28, 1947 – June 20, 1948; 39 episodes) started with "The Case of the Dog Who Changed His Mind" and ended with an adaptation of "The Adventure of the Veiled Lodger".[48] Season 8 (September 12, 1948 – June 6, 1949; 39 episodes) started with an episode titled "The Case of the Unwelcome Ambassador" and ended with an episode titled "The Adventure of the Red Death".[49] Season 9 (September 21, 1949 – June 14, 1950; 39 episodes) started with an episode with an unknown title.

"The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet", one of the 56 short Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, is the eleventh of the twelve stories collected in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The story was first published in The Strand Magazine in May 1892. Plot A coronet of a British earl A Streatham banker named Mr Alexander Holder makes a loan of £50,000 (equivalent to approximately £6.95 million in 2023 to a client from one of the "highest, noblest, most exalted names in England," implied to be a member of the British Royal Family and, thus, a son of Queen Victoria and an heir to the throne. The client leaves the beryl coronet, described as one of the "most precious public possessions of the empire," as collateral. Feeling his bank's personal safe is insufficient to protect such a rare and valuable piece of jewellery, he takes it home and keeps it in his dressing room. However, he and his niece Mary later find his son Arthur holding the coronet, seemingly trying to bend it, with three beryls missing from it. A panicked Holder seeks out Sherlock Holmes for help. Despite the damning evidence against Arthur, who refuses to give a statement, Holmes is unconvinced. With the threat of Holder's reputation being besmirched and a national scandal weighing heavily on his mind, Holmes determines Arthur could not have broken the coronet on his own without making noise, notices footprints in the snow outside Holder's home, and considers Holder's servants, Mary, and Arthur's rakish friend Sir George Burnwell as potential suspects. Eventually, Holmes concludes Burnwell is a notorious criminal who conspired with Mary, unaware of his real identity, to steal the coronet. Arthur caught the pair in the act and broke the coronet while trying to take it back from Burnwell before taking the blame for Mary out of love for her. Though Burnwell and Mary escape justice, Holmes is convinced they will receive their punishment in due time. He later buys back the missing beryls from a fence that Burnwell sold them to, receives compensation from Holder, and tells him to apologize to Arthur for assuming he was the thief. Publication history "The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet" was first published in the UK in The Strand Magazine in May 1892, and in the United States in the US edition of the Strand in June 1892.[3] The story was published with nine illustrations by Sidney Paget in The Strand Magazine It was included in the short story collection The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,[4] which was published in October 1892. These radio dramas, called The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, were written for radio by Edith Meiser, and starred Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce. Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00pm. Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher". The series was originally broadcast from Hollywood. During WWII the show was also broadcast overseas through the Armed Forces Radio Service.
