Rider Haggard at 1001 Stories From The Gilded Age: https://www.bestof1001stories.com/show/1001storiesfromthegildedage/marie-by-h-rider-haggard-chap-1/ In Chapter 1 of "The Great Boer War", titled "The Boer Nations," Arthur Conan Doyle explores the historical and cultural origins of the Boer people to explain why they became such formidable opponents for the British Empire. Key Summary Points The Ancestry of the Boer: Doyle describes the Boers as a "rugged, virile, unconquerable" race. He attributes their character to a mix of Dutch settlers (who famously resisted Spain) and French Huguenots (who fled religious persecution). Environmental Conditioning: For seven generations, these settlers lived in a harsh African landscape, fighting "savage men and ferocious beasts". This lifestyle developed their world-class skills in horsemanship and marksmanship, which later became critical military advantages. Religious and Patriotic Zeal: Their identity was further solidified by a "dour fatalistic Old Testament religion" and an intense, consuming patriotism. Historical Friction with Britain: Doyle identifies early tensions starting with the British takeover of the Cape Colony in 1814. A primary source of conflict was the British government's role as a "protector of the native servants," which clashed with the Boers' slaveholding practices. The Slachter's Nek Incident: He highlights the 1815 execution of five Dutch farmers after a rebellion triggered by the arrest of a farmer for maltreating a slave. Doyle notes that while a race can forget the victims of a battlefield, they never forget the "victims of the scaffold". The Great Trek: Discontent with British rule and the abolition of slavery led to the "Great Trek". Thousands of Boers moved inland to the "bare pastures of the upland veldt" to establish their own republics, the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, away from British "civilised rule". Historical Context for Your Episode Doyle wrote this work in 1900 while serving as a volunteer doctor during the conflict. His goal was to provide a "thorough account" of the war's causes and early battles based on eyewitness accounts from his patients.

Two great episodes of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes starring Nigel Bruce and Basil RathboneIn the radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, these episodes aired during the mid-1940s and reflect the show's blend of original scripts and classic adaptations. The Fifth of November Original Air Date: November 5, 1945 This episode, also known as "The Gunpowder Plot", was written by Anthony Boucher and originally broadcast on Guy Fawkes Day. The Client: A man named James Stuart visits Baker Street, fearing his cousin, Guy Falkenberry, plans to murder him by blowing him up. The Plot: The case is steeped in the history of the 1605 Gunpowder Plot. Stuart is a descendant of the royal family targeted by the original plot, and the modern threat seems to be a symbolic reenactment. The Mystery: Holmes must determine if the threat is a genuine terrorist plot or a personal vendetta masked by historical pageantry. The episode is noted for being an original story inspired by elements of the Conan Doyle story "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot". The Speckled Band Original Air Date: November 12, 1945 This episode is a faithful radio adaptation of one of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's most famous locked-room mysteries. The Client: Helen Stoner seeks Holmes's help after being forced to move into the bedroom where her sister, Julia, died under mysterious circumstances two years prior. The Clues: Julia's dying words were "the speckled band". Holmes discovers several anomalies in the room: a bed bolted to the floor, a dummy bell-rope, and a ventilator that leads to the room of their violent stepfather, Dr. Grimesby Roylott. The Resolution: During a night vigil, Holmes discovers the "band" is a venomous swamp adder. Roylott had been sending the snake through the ventilator to murder his stepdaughters to prevent them from marrying and taking their inheritance. Holmes strikes the snake, driving it back through the vent where it kills Roylott instead. Get all of our shows at one website: bestof1001stories.com REVIEWS NEEDED . "The Terrifying Cats" and "The Submarine Caves" are episodes of the radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, which originally starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. These episodes often featured original scripts by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green rather than direct adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. The Terrifying Cats Original Air Date: February 25, 1946 In this episode, Holmes is approached by an American opera singer who has a paralyzing, deadly fear of cats. The case evolves into a murder investigation when the singer is accused of a crime in Rome. Holmes and Watson must travel to Italy to exonerate the singer and uncover the truth behind the sinister forces at play. Key Plot Points: The client suffers from an intense phobia of felines. Holmes and Watson journey to Rome to solve the mystery. The investigation involves exonerating the opera singer of a murder charge. The Submarine Caves Original Air Date: March 4, 1946 Set in the summer of 1896, Holmes and Watson travel to the Island of Garth (referred to in some records as the Island of G), a small, independent territory in the English Channel. Their official, public reason for visiting is a bizarre diplomatic tradition: accepting an annual ceremonial pound of butter on behalf of the British Crown. The Hidden Threat: The island contains a massive interior cavern accessible only through underwater channels. This makes it a strategically vital natural harbor and dry dock for a submarine fleet. The Mystery: Upon arrival, they discover the island's ruler, Martha Horn (known as Mother Horn), has died suddenly. Holmes suspects poisoning due to a "silly grin" on her face. The Conflict: Holmes must contend with the island's housekeeper, Mrs. Reeves, who exerts a suspicious amount of control over the new heir, Christopher Horn. The Resolution: Holmes uncovers a German-linked espionage plot involving Dr. Oberwald and Mrs. Reeves. They intended to use the island as a secret submarine base, threatening the security of the British Isles. The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes was a popular American radio series that aired from 1939 to 1950, primarily starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. The show followed a framing device where a retired Watson, living in California, would share stories of his past cases with a weekly guest. While some episodes were direct adaptations of Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories, many others were original scripts written specifically for the radio. Episode Summaries Murder in the Casbah (Original Air Date: December 3, 1945) Holmes and Watson travel to North Africa to search for an Englishman named Douglas Milton, who fled Britain years prior after being wrongly accused of murder. Milton is now the heir to a noble title, but he is hiding in the lawless Casbah of Algiers, where he has joined the Foreign Legion. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce take us on another great Sherlock Holmes Adventure sponsored by Petri Wines. "The Great Gandolfo" is an episode of The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes radio series, which aired on October 22, 1945, starring Basil Rathbone as Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. It was written by Anthony Boucher and Denis Green, and while not an original Arthur Conan Doyle story, it was inspired by "The Adventure of the Second Stain" (1904). Summary: The Setup: The episode, sponsored by Petri Wine, begins with Dr. Watson sharing a tale of a case involving a "great" figure, though not in the way one might expect. The Case: Holmes and Watson are involved in a mystery centered on a character named "The Great Gandolfo". Plotline: The narrative involves a tense situation revolving around a missing item, drawing thematic inspiration from "The Adventure of the Second Stain," where a missing document threatens national security. The plot, characteristic of the series, is fast-paced, involving wit and, at times, more humorous elements than the original canon. Context: The show was a popular wartime radio drama, featuring the classic duo of a high-strung Holmes and a genial Watson, with original narrations and commercials. The episode is part of the 6th season of the series' run on the Mutual Network. New Twitter address- @1001podcast Follow Us! REVIEWS NEEDED . Holmes and Watson come to the aid of an old war buddy of Watson's who is haunted by visions of the past. The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a series of radio dramas based on Arthur Conan Doyle's detective Sherlock Holmes. Written by Bert Coules as a pastiche of Doyle's work, the series was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in 2002, 2004, 2008–2009 and 2010. There are sixteen episodes, all of them produced and directed by Patrick Rayner of BBC Scotland. Clive Merrison stars as Holmes, having portrayed the detective in a 1989–1998 BBC radio series of dramatisations of every Sherlock Holmes story by Doyle (the first actor to do so). Andrew Sachs appears as Dr. Watson, replacing Michael Williams after Williams died following the Radio 4 run of Sherlock Holmes adaptations. Each of the stories is based on a throwaway reference from an actual Doyle short story or novel. New Twitter address- @1001podcast Follow Us! A man is found dead from a bullet wound on a train to London and Scotland Yard is unable to piece together how it happened. This is one of Doyle's first murder mysteries and one of the few which does not include Sherlock Holmes. "The Story of the Man with the Watches" (1898) It was collected in Doyle's Round the Fire Stories (1908) and Tales of Terror and Mystery (1922). The story concerns the appearance of a dead man in a railway carriage, with six pocket watches in his jacket. THE CABMAN'S STORY "The Cabman's Story" is a short crime fiction story by Arthur Conan Doyle, first published anonymously in Cassell's Saturday Journal on May 17, 1884. The narrative serves as a frame for an old, experienced London cabman to share a series of grim and mysterious encounters he has had during his long career as a "growler" (four-wheeler cab) driver. Summary of the Stories The story is a collection of three vignettes related by the cabman to a fare: The Dead Passenger: The cabman's first account involves two well-dressed women who flag him down late at night and ask him to transport a man they claim is heavily intoxicated to an address in Clapham. The fare is paid in advance with a sovereign. Upon arrival, the cabman and a servant discover the man is not drunk, but in fact already dead, a victim of willful murder with all identifying items removed from his pockets. An inquest later confirms he was dead when placed in the cab. The Forger: The second anecdote describes a little, bespectacled man who becomes a regular customer, hiring the cab for three hours daily for apparently aimless rides around London. The cabman becomes suspicious due to the man's large black bag and his insistence on closed windows. The police eventually arrest the passenger, revealing he was a forger using the moving, closed cab as a mobile and private workshop to print Bank of England notes undetected. The Dynamiter: The final, brief story concerns a stout, sailor-like man the cabman drove to the docks who was carrying a hollowed-out "coal torpedo" filled with dynamite. The cabman observed the device through a small window he had installed in his cab after the forger incident. He later reports this to the police after hearing news of a ship explosion, but they are unable to trace the man Get all of our shows at one website: https://WWW.BESTOF1001STORIES.COM REVIEWS NEEDED . The Springbok Radio series The Stories of Sherlock Holmes was a South African radio drama that aired from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s. The show was a notable part of the legacy of Springbok Radio, a major commercial station in South Africa at the time. Airing Period: The series ran between 1979/1980 and 1985. Springbok Radio itself ceased broadcasting in 1985. Cast: Sherlock Holmes was played by Graham Armitage, and Dr. Watson was portrayed by Kerry Jordan. Jordan's portrayal of Watson was noted as not being the "bumbling" type seen in some other adaptations (such as the Nigel Bruce version). Production: The episodes were produced by Michael Silver in Johannesburg. Format: The series consisted of an estimated 47 to 50 episodes, each approximately 20-30 minutes long. They were typically broadcast on Sunday evenings at 6 PM. Content: The stories were original works or loose adaptations, and did not strictly adhere to the original Arthur Conan Doyle canon. Though less known globally than the BBC or American productions, the series remains an interesting part of Sherlock Holmes radio history. Some episodes are available for listening on platforms like the Internet Archive and various podcast services.

(Radio Adaptation. )In 1939-1940 this Mutual Broadcasting System radio program "Sherlock Holes Adventures" starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson was popular. These are shortened adaptations (the usual Sherlock Holmes adventure is a one hour read).. These recordings are of varying quality with most in the good to very good sound range. I still like the story exactly as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes it but this radio adaptation is pretty good. The Telltale Pigeon Feathers (radio 1946) The Telltale Pigeon Feathers is the 21th episode of season 6 of the American radio series The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, first aired on WOR-MBS (the Mutual Network) on 21 january 1946, starring Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. 28 min. Sponsored by Petri Wine. This is not an adaptation of an Arthur Conan Doyle's story, but inspired by The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter (1893).

The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a radio drama series which aired in the USA from 1939 to 1950,[1] it ran for 374 episodes, with many of the later episodes considered lost media.[2] The series was based on the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. Some of the surviving episode recordings may be found online, in various audio quality condition. For most of the show's run, the program starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Dr. Watson. Other actors played Holmes and Watson in later seasons. Production From the outset of the show, the series was billed in different listings under various titles including Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson, and other titles. The most popularly remembered title is The New Adventures of Sherlock Holmes.[3] On occasion, the title of a radio episode differs from that of its original story – for example, the radio adaption of "The Adventure of the Red Circle" is entitled "Mrs. Warren's Lodger". From 1939 until 1943, episodes were adapted or written by Edith Meiser[4] who had written the earlier series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes which aired from 1930 to 1935. Meiser left the show after disagreements with a sponsor over the amount of violence in the program.[5] It is also reported that Meiser left the show to focus on other projects.[6] From 1943 onward, most episodes were written by the team of Denis Green and Anthony Boucher[4] with some early episodes written by Green and Leslie Charteris.[7][8] Edith Meiser returned to write for the show for its seventh season. Max Ehrlich and Howard Merrill wrote the episodes of season 8. Denis Green returned as a writer for the last season.[9] Originally, the show starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Bruce as Doctor Watson.[10][11] Together, they starred in 220 episodes which aired weekly on Mondays from 8:30 to 9:00 pm.[12] Basil Rathbone's last episode as the famous detective was "The Singular Affair of the Baconian Cipher". He was eager to separate himself from the show to avoid being typecast in the role.[citation needed] On October 12, 1946, Tom Conway replaced him in the starring role,[13] though Nigel Bruce got top billing. The new series lasted 39 episodes, and Bruce and Conway then left the series. From then until 1950 the series continued with various actors playing the two principal parts. The show first aired on the Blue Network but later moved to the Mutual Broadcasting System.[14] The show moved to Mutual in 1943 at the start of its fourth season.[15] The series was originally broadcast from Hollywood. During World War II, the show was also broadcast overseas through the Armed Forces Radio Service. The program aired on ABC instead of Mutual for its sixth and ninth seasons.[16] Many episodes were recorded in front of a live audience.

A very well spoken woman dressed in rags arrives at Watson's home with the urgent request for his services.
