V roce 1905 vyšel článek dosud naprosto neznámého Alberta Eisteina, představující jeho speciální teorii relativity. Byl to velký průlom ve světě fyziky, a možná proto trvalo léta, než byla obecná teorie relativity skutečně přijata a pochopena.
