Sheltering in God's Shadow in Stormy Seasons (Psalm 91:1)

I'm your host, Jennifer Slattery. And after this short word from our sponsor, we'll dive into today's Bible verse, Psalm 91:1 Today's Bible verse is Psalm 91:1, "Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." It's tornado season in Nebraska where I live and while some of our friends unfortunately experienced significant damage in our neighborhood, the storms have been more clamorous than catastrophic. While we've had to hunker down in the basement a couple times for the most part, we've remained comfortably tucked in our beds, finding the emergency sirens, the howling wind, and occasionally house shaking thunder more of a nuisance than fear. I cannot say the same for our daughter and son in law's dog, Bubba. However, as we discovered about a week ago, when he and his little sister spent the weekend with us, the poor guy does not weather storms, well, terrified, he wanted to not only remain as close to us as possible, but he also dove under the blankets trying to seek shelter beneath us. While we certainly weren't the biggest or even strongest thing he could hide under from his perspective, we were the most powerful and so when afraid, he turned to us to keep him safe. In two recent faith over fear podcast episodes, another podcaster and I talked about some powerful Scripture that helps quiet fear if you struggle with anxiety, I encourage you to check those out the first dropped on June 18. And the second on the 25th. Again, you can find full on the Faith Over Fear podcast accessed wherever you listen to podcast content. In today's verse, God invites us to seek shelter in him. And unlike my husband and I his strength and power are limitless, and he's bigger than anyone or anything coming against us. He is the Most High, a low when or Elohim, a word in the original Hebrew that emphasizes his supremacy, the fact that he is greater than or stronger than all and above all, he is the highest possible being and the highest object of human worship. He is also the Almighty, the English translation for Shaddai, which in the original Hebrew means breasts, field or land and therefore has the connotation of provision, fruitfulness and nourishment. Putting these two names together then we see the psalmist is declaring God to be big and strong enough to keep him safe and capable of providing for all his needs. No wonder he can rest in the shelter of God's presence although some translation state in his secret place. 19th century theologian Albert Barnes wrote that this implied abiding where God abides adding quote, "the idea is that of having one's home or residence in the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle or temple, and of sitting with him in that sacred place" and quote, in Psalm 27:5 ancient Israel second king, a man by the name of David wrote that God would hide him in the shelter of His Sacred tent. Therefore to abide or dwell in God's shadow is to abide or to dwell to reside with to remain connected with God. Resting in a shadow implies the same level of proximity. I'm reminded of a game my daughter and I used to play when she was young while outside on sunny days, we would try to jump on or catch one another shadows while the other person tried to keep enough distance between them to keep that from occurring. But simply, one must follow someone closely in order for their shadow to fall upon them. remaining in God's shadow then means seeking His will and doing our best to remain yielded to His Spirit in every moment. This in turn leads to the sole deep rest of knowing we don't have to figure everything out. We don't have to solve our own problems, fight our own battles, meet our own needs, make ourselves righteous or earn our salvation. All we must do in each moment is follow. However, God leads trusting him to take care of everything else of all that concerns us. In Christ, we can cease our stressing, striving and conniving and lean into a steady strong an ever present embrace knowing he will respond onto our storms in one of three ways, he will lead us well away from the storms path before we're even aware the rain has begun to fall. Or he'll tell us to flee and will show us precisely how to do so. Or he'll give us what we need to stand strong amidst the howling wind. We see in Scripture, examples of God caring for his children in each of these ways. What we don't see, however, is him abandoning them in their fear, nor will we ever see him respond to us in that way. He will always offer a shelter in

Believing God Against All Odds (Numbers 14:24)

I'm your host, Jessica Van Roekel. And after this short word from our sponsor, we'll dive into today's Bible verse, Numbers 14:24. Today's Bible verses Numbers 14:24. "but because my servant Caleb had a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it." Two people can experience the beach but come back with differing perspectives. One might say it was too hot, and the other say it was just right. It was so relaxing to sit on the beach and watch the waves. All the stuff I had to carry me It's so stressful. It was fun to watch the people play in the waves. I felt too crowded there were too many people. I love the way sand fields in between my toes in the sand, it gets everywhere. I definitely recommend a beach vacation. Don't go it is not worth it. Perspective matters and the power of opinion can influence our decision. differing perspectives is not a new concept. Adam and Eve differed on who to blame when they ate from the tree of knowledge. Jacob and Isa differed on their perspective of birthrights Moses sent a scouting party of 12 to investigate the Promised Land 10 came back with one report, and two came back with a different report. Numbers chapters 13 and 14 read like a fast paced fiction novel. Only this is a true account of the power of opinion and the belief systems people hold. It's important to remember the Israelites had been enslaved for 400 years where the mindset of inferiority overtook their belief in their powerful Yahweh. They experienced a miraculous emancipation and rescue. But it hadn't penetrated to their belief system yet. When God led them to the edge of the promised land, he instructed Moses to send a scouting party comprised of 12 leaders of the Israelites into Canaan to bring back a report about the land. They came back with glowing reports about a land full of goodness and fruitfulness, rich soil and beautiful crops. But then they described the people as great and mighty while they were small and insignificant. 10 of the leaders declared they could not take the land. Except for to Caleb and Joshua. These two men believed they could and told the people so but belief systems reveal themselves in times of change or crisis, and the people revealed how they saw themselves as insignificant and weak. Instead of believing God for the impossible, which he had proved to them time and time again. They accused God of plotting to harm them. They rejected God's plan and promise when they decided they would select a new leader to lead them back to Egypt to a life of slavery. Moses and Aaron tore their clothes as a sign of grief and dropped to the ground in prayer. Joshua and Caleb tore their clothes as well, but they attempted to convince the people to believe in God's power to do the impossible but the people wouldn't listen. Their fear and unbelief lead them to pick up stones to stone Joshua and Caleb. In the middle of this chaos, God appeared at the tentative meeting to speak to Moses, the dilemma between faith and unbelief came to a climax. What would the people believe? Would they quit grumbling and rebelling against the Lord and choose faithfulness and belief? Caleb believed God in the face of overwhelming in disbelief. He was bold and courageous. Numbers 32:12 describes him as a man who wholeheartedly followed God. He allowed God to show him the way to take and how to conduct himself and Caleb filled up with God's Spirit and influence. This allowed him to say in Numbers 14:8-9 to his family and friends, if the Lord is pleased with us, He will lead us into the land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not be afraid of the people of the land because we will devour them. Their protection is gone, but the Lord is with us. Do not be afraid of them. The Walk of Faith is hard, because it requires us to adopt a different perspective than those around us. We longed to be different and unique. But when it comes right down to it, we have a hard time standing alone. Caleb's stand of faith seemed futile before the people, but God rewarded his faith and belief. Faithfulness is a key priority to God. Believing God can keep his word and that he is fully trustworthy requires us to become like Caleb, in our spirits. We can be bold in faith in the face of disbelief. We can believe God when the odds are stacked again

The Reward for Perseverance (James 1:12)

Become a BibleStudyTools.com PLUS Member today: https://www.biblestudytools.com/subscribe/ MEET OUR HOSTS at https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: Hello, thank you for listening to your daily bible verse, the podcast that examines one verse each day to learn more about God and His will for us. I'm your host, Jessica VanRoekel. And after this short word from our sponsor, we'll dive into today's Bible verse James 1:12. Today's Bible verses, James 1:12. "Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial, because having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him." I needed both feet to drive my 1976 Ford Thunderbird. If I didn't keep one foot on the accelerator at a stoplight, the car died when the light turned green. I became adept at releasing the brake and knowing how much gas to give the car. So I drove through the intersection instead of leaping through it, or dying in the middle of it. I'm pretty sure I was the only high school student who drove a vintage car with two feet. Today's verse talks about trials and what the reward is for perseverance. My reward for learning to drive with two feet meant I was able to get to school and work, I got my education and was able to pay my bills. And in a way, the trials that Thunderbird brought to my life helped me learn to persevere with a difficult situation. There are two sources of trials, temptations which are inner moral struggles and outside sources outside of our control. God uses these to strengthen our faith, develop perseverance, and to grow godly character. They are the means through which we become complete, and lacking in nothing. When we view our trials through this lens, we can respond to trials with joy, because we know the benefits they will produce if we remain faithful in our trust, and hope in God. trials do not indicate God is disappointed in us. They can indicate God recognizes our faith, and has confidence in our commitment to him. Job is our role model of someone who suffered much, yet never wavered in his faith and loyalty to God. The Greek definition for blessed is happy and within the context of this verse it reads, Happy is the one who perseveres. Have you ever put together a piece of furniture with only pictures or directions, it can be so frustrating, get the satisfaction of accomplishing the task results in a contented, happy feeling. We can experience this same type of happiness when we persevere through our trials, and come out the other side with genuine faith. In ancient times, people used metal to make money. This metal was soft, so people would shave it closely and then make more money from the shavings, which produced a counterfeit coin passing as the real deal. One point in history, Athens had more than 80 laws to prevent the whittle down coins from going into circulation. Certain money changers called Toki. Most were men of integrity and only distributed full weight genuine money into the economy. Having stood the test means to be proved and tried. The word "Adokimos" is used here in this verse. For the Christ follower who perseveres through the trials they experience and reveals genuine faith to those around him or her. This world needs a genuine reflection of our actions of faithfulness toward God, that match what we say about God's character. God is faithful, to help to guide and to provide what we need when we need it. Our steadfastness will be rewarded with a crown when the work of God is on display through our resistance to temptation. The final phrase in James 1:12 Is this "to those who love Him," and reveals the motive behind the one who perseveres under trial. The passions for a passing temptation or an easy way out of a trial can only be overcome by a greater passion for the honor and glory and a relationship with God. Charles Spurgeon says this, "they cannot fall into sin because it would grieve Him who loves them so well, and whom they love with all their hearts. And this love for God involves affectionate reverence, prompt obedience and grateful recognition of benefits received as a child of God." It's like driving with two feet, we keep one foot on the brake to say NO to temptation, or even to quitting on God because the trial is so much. The other foot stays on the gas and says, I love you, God and I will follow you through the outward struggles in life and through the inner wrestling between my sinful nature and my new life, surrender to you. Whatever you find yourself facing today, remember to persevere and you will receive the reward of a happy, contented heart because you gain the victory. And your steadfastness leads to a crown where God's glory shines through you. Let's pray. Holy

Struggling to Forgive (Proverbs 4:23)

Today’s Bible Verse: "Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it. - (Proverbs 4:23) Want to listen without ads? Become a BibleStudyTools.com PLUS Member today: https://www.biblestudytools.com/subscribe/ MEET OUR HOSTS at https://www.lifeaudio.com/your-daily-bible-verse/ Full Transcript Below: Hello, thank you for listening to your daily bible verse, the podcast that examines one verse each day to learn more about God and His will for us. I'm your host, Carolyn McCracken. And after a short word from our sponsor, we'll dive into today's Bible verse Proverbs 4:23. Today's Bible verse is Proverbs 4:23. "Above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it." Today we're delving into a topic that many of us can relate to the struggle to forget. I have a friend who is grappling with righteous anger trying to forgive someone for a rather serious events. She's feeling guilty about her inability to do so. I deeply respect her are reaching out to discuss and process her guilt rather than keeping it all to herself. I've been in her shoes before and I can tell you it is not a pleasant place to be. When faced with the challenge of forgiving someone. practical steps aligned with biblical principles can guide the journey toward healing. Begin with introspection, acknowledging your own emotions and seeking God's guidance. Proverbs 4:23 advises, above all else, guard your heart for everything you do flows from it. Now guarding your heart involves assessing the offenses impact on your emotions and recognizing the need for forgiveness. It's a very good place to begin. In my opinion. Introspection is always good, but that's just the beginning. Because as I was reminded at a woman's conference I attended, our words are potent, their power, and there is a connection between the mouth and the heart. Sooner or later our mouth reflects what flows from the heart. If we've been offended, how we respond reflects what's happening in our hearts. We may have righteous anger in our hearts, but how do we use words, they'll have an impact. Note that the birth says above all else. This takes on a level of importance. David Guzik points out in his commentary in the blue Letter Bible, the heart is a reservoir, and change must begin there. If the reservoir is polluted, it does no good to fix the pipes and the valves, emotions, feelings, motives and affections are all in heart. And if we allow it to be polluted by allowing our anger to grow without check, it's going to come out as such. And at the same women's conference, a very wise thing that seems so obvious but happens all the time. Nothing slams a door faster than a bullish mouth. This further complicates the problem of struggling to forgive, you need to forgive now, we may need to be forgiven, which is a potentially ugly cycle. Don't get me wrong, we all said things we shouldn't in the moment. And to the extent that we can, we must keep our hearts full of good things. And not everything's in our control. I realize that we live in a broken world. Thank goodness, we don't have to do this on our own power. We can lean on God through the Holy Spirit. Trust me on this. It takes practice, but it's some of the best advice I ever received. Proverbs in the Bible is a collection of sayings generally believed to be written, or at least curated by Solomon. Solomon was the king of Israel. In the Old Testament, He was chosen by God to oversee the building of the temple floor God, a place of worship and indwelling place. Solomon asked God for wisdom, and God granted it along with great wealth and prosperity. These proverbs were thought to teach how to live wisely as one who worshiped God. guarding our hearts is a warning not to give into our emotions at the moment. It might feel justified and reasonable at first, but it can harden our hearts from forgiveness. God ultimately wants to heal our hearts and keep them full of good things so our mouths will speak good things and he can use our mouths for His glory. Consider the transformative power of empathy Colossians 3:13 implores believers to forgive as the Lord forgave them, reflect on instances where you sought forgiveness and extend that grace to others. This empathetic approach facilitates a mindset shift from resentment to compassion. In practical forgiveness may involve setting boundaries to protect yourself while actively choosing to release resentment Ephesians 4:31-32 encourages believers to "get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, and to be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you." In the recovery community, we're taught that resentment is an enemy to recovery from an addiction. It lives and grows in our hearts. And what do we do if someone doesn't deserve our forgiveness? Well, we're forgive anyway. forgiveness doesn't mean we forget. But unforgiveness grows and festers and our hearts and hardens them and what's in our hearts will flow out at some

You'll find me at Gracefox.com. And now, after this short word from our sponsor, we'll dive into today's Bible verse, 1 Samuel 17:45. Today's Bible verse is 1 Samuel 17:45. "David said to the Philistine, you come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel whom you have defied." I love watching movies or reading stories where the main character faces a challenge that seems insurmountable and wins. It does my heart good to see the little guy defeat the giant. Maybe that's why I enjoy the Bible story of David and Goliath so much. The little guy in this story was only a teenager, the youngest brother relegated to the despicable task of caring for his father's clocks. One day at his father's bidding, he took food to his brothers who were soldiers in Israel's army. That's when he witnessed a nine foot tall giant in the enemy army, intimidate his brothers and the others fighting in the same forces. The Goliath giant strutted towards the troops and hurled insults and threats, and the entire army ran away in fear. He did this twice a day for 40 days. But things changed when David showed up. Humanly speaking, David didn't stand a chance against Goliath. Like I said a moment ago the giant tower and more than nine feet tall. He was also fully armored. 1 Samuel 17:5-7 says "he wore a bronze helmet and his bronze coat of male weighed 125 pounds. He also wore bronze leg armor and he carried a bronze Javelin on his shoulder. The shaft of his spear was as heavy and thick as a weaver's beam, tipped with an iron spearhead that weighed 15 pounds. His armor bearer walked ahead of him carrying a shield." This guy seemed impenetrable. It's no wonder he intimidated the Israelite army. Unlike Goliath, whose bronze jacket probably weighed as much or more than David. The teenager wore no battle protection whatsoever. No helmet, no leg coverings no coat to cover his body. David carried no javelin and he certainly had no armor bearer walking ahead of him carrying a protective shield. from a human perspective. His defeat was a guarantee. But here's the thing. David face the giant with no fear. He not only stood his ground, he ran towards a giant in strength and courage because he had a weapon more powerful than a bronze javelin and body armor. He entered the battle in the power of the name of the Lord Almighty. The name Lord Almighty is translated from the compound Hebrew name. Yahweh Saba Oat. Yawei refers to the Lord creator and King over heaven and earth, who desires relationship with us. Saba means host or armies and implies the amassing of forces, sometimes within a military context. As I did research for my new book Names of God living unafraid, I found that scripture suggests three possible applications for this name. First, God is Commander in Chief of the armies of man second And he is Chief over angelic beings both good and evil. And third, he is supreme over all the heavenly hosts, sun, moon stars and planets. Theologians agree on these applications and they also agree that we needn't choose one over the other because God is God. Over all. Different Bible versions translate the name Yahweh Sabaoh in different ways. The New International Version says Lord Almighty, the New Living Translation says the Lord of Heaven's armies. The New American Standard, says, The Lord of Armies and the English Standard Version says the Lord of hosts, regardless of the translation, your way Saba Oh tells us that God is invincible in battle. He is Commander in Chief and nothing stands in his way. Nothing stops him from accomplishing His purposes. David understood this aspect of God's character. And this understanding was the weapon with which David faced the giant. We face giants to don't we not the nine foot tall type, but giants concerning our health or the health of a loved one. We f
