S5 Ep 279YCBK 279: The Future of Fair Admissions: Is Early Decision Fair?

In this episode you will hear: (15:48) Mark and Susan discuss the first of three reports by Educational Reform Now entitled, "The Future of Fair Admissions Report 1: Early Decision". The Report was written by the Senior Policy Analyst, James Murphy. The Report looks at a number of questions including: Who benefits from Early Decision; which colleges utilize Early Decision the most; does ED give students an inherent advantage; What can be done to change affirmative action to make it more just and equitable. Each discussion is approximately 32 minutes. https://edreformnow.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/The-Future-of-Fair-Admissions-Report-1-Early-Decision.pdf (35:18) Mark and Lisa answer a question from Nina of Massachusetts: I keep hearing a lot about the "reach for all" schools and the importance of a well balanced college list. I guess I'm struggling with knowing what schools are actually target vs reach vs reach for all. By way of background my son has a strong GPA and ACT scores and seems to check a lot of boxes but I have a hard to believing any school is in his reach just given the amount of applications schools are receiving. Are "reach for all" schools just the ivies or is it schools usually in the Top 20 (on those awful rankings)? Is a 20% acceptance rate still a reach for all? I guess it just seems like everything is a reach for all when it comes to schools (especially those in the northeast!). (57:32) Mark continues his interview with Milyon Truelove, the Vice President and Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid at Reed College. We turn our attention to the topic of, "Understanding Reed College" Part 1 of 2 Preview of Part 1 Milyon gives a great overview of the type of student that excels at Reed Milyon describes where Reed is located, what the campus is like and how well students have done in getting advanced degrees Milyon talks about the mission of Reed and how it impacts the student experience Milyon shares something unique about Reed's faculty Milyon talks about Reed's unique position on sports Milyon talks about how being in Portland impacts the student experience Milyon and Stuck discuss what are the distinctive traits of the Reed student Milyon talks about why Reed has it's grading policy that it has Milyon talks about some of the distinctive programs that Reed offers (01:09:32) Our Recommended Resource is a Forbes article that does a great job at explaining the difference between REPAY (Revised Pay as You Earn) and PAYE (Pay as you Earn) Melissa Ford of the Damsel of Success YouTube channel also has a great video on REPAY that I recommend you check out, but this article has a great explanation of the differences between the two leading Income Driven Repayment Plans. Income Driven repayment plans are usually appropriate for students who have more student loan debt then their salary. Every college counselor needs to be familiar with these differences but every parent should also know their options when it comes to having their student pay student debt. The article is written by Kat Tretina and Mike Cetera of Forbes and it is entitled, PAYE vs REPAYE, which student loan repayment plan is right for you? It is an excellent article we encourage you to read. https://www.forbes.com/advisor/student-loans/paye-vs-repaye/ We now have set up audio recordings in your own voice for any question you send in for our "question from a listener" segment. S5 Ep 257YCBK 257: Be a College Admission Data Scientist

In this episode you will hear: Mark and Julia discuss part 3 of Brennan Barnard's excellent article that appeared in Forbes on June 9th, 2022, "Be a College Admission Data Scientist". The article covers many areas where colleges could be more transparent about their data, so you need to probe. We also examine the dilemma colleges face: if they share more, they open themselves up to criticism and misinterpretation of their data. (26:38) If you are a fan of YCBK's lengthy episodes, Mark and Julia, recorded the longest "In the News" in YCBK history. Mark and Julia cover a range of topics from why are so many teachers quitting to what your student needs to do to research the colleges they are applying to https://www.forbes.com/sites/brennanbarnard/2022/06/09/be-a-college-admission-data-scientist/?sh=7e2b0c416d8a (01:13:42) For our question from a listener, it is bonus content time. Lisa leads Mark with a discussion about what parents can do if their own child is feeling devalued because they may not be admitted to an elite college. This is a two-part question. The first part was answered on episode 255 and the final part is answered here on episode 257. (01:37:58) Our interview is with Heath Einstein, the Dean of Admissions. In Part 3 of 3, Mark and Julia discuss the following: Preview of Part 3 What college majors did we not ask you about that are every bit as strong as the ones we did ask you about but they fly under the radar? We know that academic rigor, grades and grade trends are important in admission but what role do the following things play in admission decisions One of our co-host Vince Garcia from California wants to know, do you admit by college or by major, and which programs are the hardest to get into? What advice do you have on college essays and how they impact TCU admission decisions What is the Freedom of Expression and how does that impact admissions decisions What are some of the institutional priorities of TCU? Heath goes on the hotseat in our lightning round and wait until you hear what he says about Albert Einstein! The TCU interview with Dean of Admissions, Heath Einstein will also serve as our college spotlight. (01:51:42) The recommended resource is https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/ The website contains lots of discussions about wall street carreers, including which colleges have a good track record of placing kids in which Wall Street jobs. S5 Ep 249YCBK 249: College admissions, who knows what?

In this episode you will hear: (16:20) Mark and Julia discuss a June 6th article in Forbes by Brennan Barnard entitled, "College admissions, who knows what". This is the first piece of this three-part series examined the issues around transparency in college admission. Mark and Julia will discuss all three of these articles for three consecutive months https://www.forbes.com/sites/brennanbarnard/2022/06/06/college-admission-who-knows-what/?sh=48f213553274 (36:20) For our question from a listener, comes from Nina from Massachusetts and she wants to know: My son has played the trumpet since the 4th grade and when we started high school he made the decision that he wanted to stay in Concert Band which I fully support. Because band meets 4x per week it limits him in his ability to take other courses. For example, our high school offers an engineering certificate if you complete certain courses. Because of his choice to stay in band, he's not able to take many electives and has to choose among those that will fit with his other core classes. Is this something we need to explain to schools? (01:13:00) Our interview is with Dr. Robert Alexander, the Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and Enrollment Management. In Part 1 of 2, Mark and Dr. Alexander discuss the following: Introduction and Greetings Robert, give us your backstory, walk us up to various admission roles you have had and what you are doing today? Robert, take 3-5 minutes to explain UR to someone who knows nothing about UR? Describe a student who thrives at UR? How "open" is UR's open curriculum? What are some unusual ways that students take advantage of it? What is the university's relationship with Medical Center complex? Are undergrads involved? The University of Rochester interview will also serve as our college spotlight. (01:20:35) The recommended resource is "Breaking Ranks" How the Rankings Industry Rules Higher Education and what to do about it" by Colin Driver, President of Reed College .
