S8 Ep 8The Architecture of Evil
EI've long been fascinated by the story of Thomas Kirkbride, a Quaker and architect who believed that our environment played a crucial role in our mental health. Kirkbride is responsible for the building of "insane asylums" across the country, imposing, fortress-like structures that to the eye looked like they were designed to star in terrifying Ari Aster films. In reality, Kirkbride envisioned these buildings as instrumental to healing. If one were to have a bird's eye view of the hospitals, they looked like bird's wings outstretched, ready to take flight. The sickest patients were placed at the furthest end of the wings; as they healed, they moved closer to the exit. And to freedom. This is the story about a different kind of fortress. One specifically designed to keep people in and to cause extreme discomfort while inside. Judging by the title, this story touches on darker themes, specifically on the ways we cause suffering. There is so much suffering. But as always, we hope it leads to meaningful conversations like the one we had with Freddy. If you have wanted to submit a story but worried it was too short, this is your time! This is an official call for entires for your short but scary tales. We'll be compiling our favorites for a future anthology episode, so send them on! Got a shadow person lurking in your bedroom? Strangers that invade your dreams? S8 Ep 7The Old Spanish Treasure Cave
EHappy Heat Dome to all who celebrate! For those listening in the northern hemisphere, it's likely you are very, very warm. At podcast HQ in Memphis, it's recommended we drink water and stay indoors between 11 AM and November 2. It's pretty brutal. Where it's always a consistent and pleasant 58 degrees? The Old Spanish Treasure Cave in Gravette, Arkansas. I adore a roadside attraction. But one that comes with a very unexpected, non advertised supernatural twist? It was a spring break road trip adventure of a lifetime. Grab some road snacks and settle in for a Goonies-style tall tale of Spanish invaders, hidden treasure, and quite possibly a ghost in the darkest recesses of an underground cavern. Check out their website for photos of the cave and some of the artifacts mentioned in the story: https://spanish-treasure-cave.com Enjoy! And thank you as always for your support of the show! S8 Ep 5The Shadow Man
EIn the late 1990s in Sydney, Australia, Damon hangs with an eclectic, vibrant friend group in an old Victorian share house. They don't talk about the man that watches them. Because the Shadow Man is always watching. **Spring is springing here at Podcast HQ so we're sneezy and Benadrylled up and excited to share this slow burn from Down Under. One of the greatest pleasures of producing this show is hearing from you and hearing stories from literally all around the globe. To that end, I have a show bucket-list request: I want an Antarctican ghost story! S8 Ep 3The Most Haunted House in Ohio Part 2
EThis episode has everything. Ghost criminals! Ghosts in the machine! EVPS! Demon shoutouts!* Melissa in a very unplanned way! We pick back up with Michelle, Nana, her two kids, and a violent, furious entity that is intent on terrorizing everyone in the family. *For real. Not to be spoilery but in a uniquely ghost podcast trigger warning way, but after some discussion we've beeped the name of a demon at 27:10. Unbeeped version is on Patreon for the curious, but there's pretty strong context clues left in here. Here we go! S8 Ep 1A Family Affair
EHello gentle listeners. How's about a gentle story to usher us into the wilds of 2025. I'm always fascinated by the marital dynamics of true believers vs skeptics. But what happens when the skeptic is the one that sees dead people? Good thing that Nina is prepared to help guide her husband - and their kid - through the intricacies of unexpected drop ins from long dead relatives. Enjoy! And thank you as always. S7 Ep 12Hell Hath No Fury
EGet in loser. We're going to the Florida Keys, so you know we're running into some ghosts. It's Hemingway! It's six toed cats! Cute as button Victorian cottages that all contain their own special flavor of drama. "That's all we do isn't it - look at things and try new drinks?" That's what Hemingway wrote. For Mandy, she's trying her best to live up to this adage. A very angry ghost is making that pretty challenging.
