To be considered great in God’s sight you must humble yourself before Him. That’s not the way of the world, is it? That’s why the world doesn’t understand it, thinks it’s nonsense, and argues that things like aggressiveness, self-promotion, and self-esteem are the keys to success.
But the Christian’s ultimate “success” can never be realized in this temporal life on earth. It can only be realized in eternal life in heaven.
That life will be nothing like this one. For that reason, Jesus teaches us that the rewards we are to strive for are in heaven, not on earth. Only if we humble ourselves here will He exalt us there.
