Dr. Jeffrey Swanson, Professor at Duke University School of Medicine, joined Jeff Hamlin on the WPTF Afternoon News to delve into a Duke Health-led analysis revealing that an estimated one life is saved for every 17 instances where an extreme risk protection order (ERPO) removes firearms from individuals at risk of harming themselves or others. Swanson discussed the effectiveness of ERPOs, also known as “red flag laws,” which are civil court orders designed to temporarily restrict access to guns for those deemed an imminent threat. With 21 states and the District of Columbia having enacted these laws in recent years, Swanson explored the report's findings and the implications for public safety.
