Lex starts off strong by intimidating prison wardens into releasing their meta-human inmates but then it kind of goes off the rails with Toyman spiking the prison chowder with rage sauce and the heroes getting the upper hand. Concurrently in LA, Morbius keeps trying to snack on noted werewolf Jack Russell and happens upon this mountain business. To make it matters all sorts of difficult, Man-Thing drops in and starts burning dudes with his creepy advances. Instead of, you know, getting pets out of trees, Jimmy opts to mediate a labor dispute using shadow puppets and cheap wigs.In the second story, Jimmy bodies an interplanetary potion and dreams that he can fly. He uses these powers to join the circus only to tragically drown in front of thousands. WildC.A.T.s Annual #1 (2000)We finally got around to messing with a WildC.A.T.s book on the show and its smack dab in the middle of their jabroni period where the original team died and angry cyborgs ran amok. In this (I guess) annual, Grifter’s brother Condition Red returns from the dead only to get returned to dust by Grifter himself. Its not all that exciting but thankfully we spend a considerable amount of time with Ladytron, the ornery cyborg who breaks off arms in arm-wrestling contests like Jeff Goldblum in THE FLY. The aforementioned teenagers and their translucent dog show up in our timeline, cause a young woman to get hit by a bus, only to be revived by a group of dead presidents. Eventually, both of them are captured by bloodthirsty monks who force the heroines to do battle against each other in suspended harnesses like MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME. Also, I-Ching is here, freely commenting on everything like he’s Sinbad in every movie Sinbad has ever been in. We opt to go in on the latest cinematic offering from DC Comics — BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN). It’s an unremarkable movie but there are are some bright spots and opportunities to build upon. Green Lantern [vol 2] #173 (1984)This ep is about Green Lantern. Quick question though — does anyone know how the constructs actually work? Like, does Hal have to be RIGHT NEXT TO IT for it to exist or can he fly away, go get lunch and come back to find his construct still intact?Anyway, Green Lantern comes back from space exile and goes back to work at Ferris, saves a dude from getting impaled by a girder and tries out a psionic recliner. Later, he meets Javelin, a German Olympian with Cloud Car pilots for henchmen. Marvel Two-In-One #38 (1978)We are back from a brief holiday break with a predictably ridiculous look at MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE with The Thing and Daredevil.The Thing is in jail because he’s raging rock monster. Matt Murdock is awful at his lawyer duties in his defense of Ben so its up to Daredevil to get The Thing cleared. Daredevil then beats up Tom Atkins from HALLOWEEN III and accomplishes nothing. Thankfully, Ben just breaks out of prison because he’s super-strong and confronts the culprit, the Mad Thinker, in his sewer lair. Haywire #3 (1988)This book almost ruined us.Haywire was an early DC “mature readers” offering (pre-Vertigo) about a scruffy dude whose parents get murdered and somehow, he ends up in a psionic suit of armor that looks like a rejected TMNT villain design. Like something Krang would come up with only to have it get dismantled in a single episode.In this particular issue, Haywire squares off against a BDSM-based villain called Nightlash who pretty much beats him like a jabroni. This book’s narrative and character distinction was very confusing; so much that it gave us both anxiety like when you know you can comprehend something but for some reason, you just CAN’T in that particular instance.
