S1 Ep 196Episode 196 The Acts of the Author

E

Today's Topic 3 Act Structure and 5 Act Structure So I hear a lot from worldbuilders. I have interviewed them on the podcast. I talk to them all the time in the Fantasy Worldbuilder's Undercroft Facebook group. When the topic shifts to storytelling. The most common topics are act structures. The two most common versions are the 3 act structure and the 5 act structure. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com These are important to understanding Common structures in storytelling are vital. They make it easier for readers to make sense of the stories. It has an additional benefit for the storyteller. Structure tells us when to climax the story and start the resolution. I am not an academic or even overly educated in the structure and plots and stories. However, I have seen and read many stories. And most of them have either the 3 act structure or the 5 act structure. I am not an academic or even overly educated in the structure and plots and stories. S1 Ep 194Episode 194 Let's Build a Fantasy Villain's Lair

E

Today's Topic Creating a home for a villain Michael and I hope you enjoyed the first part of the story, "Marcus and the Jewels of Daivvavaahra". In the story, we talked about an old castle that was being rented to a new merchant. However, we recorded this first. It is an example of how I do a quick build for a new structure for my fantasy world, Gardul. We create in general a small old castle that sits in the middle of the old part of the city of Baurhdrakkas. It ended up with one tall tower an important set piece for the story. There is also one room that stores the Jewels of Daivvavaahra. That means the room should be the location of this heist story. S1 Ep 192Episode 192 The Total Eclipse of your fantasy sun

E

Today's Topic Using the Total Eclipse to rethink our fantasy cultures The total eclipse has happened in the United States on 8/21/2017. It started in the Northwest and continued to the Southeast. And unlike what I said in the episode will come in 7 years on 4/8/2024. It will cover many parts of the country that missed it in 2017. However, why is this a world-building topic? Total Eclipses are universally bad events in early cultures The sun and its position are exceptionally important to early cultures. In all parts of the world, the sun tells you important facts. When is the wet season or dry season in the tropics and when the snow is coming in the north? It helps as agriculture starts. When do you plant and harvest your food? An event in the heavens that blots out the sun would be terrifying It would attack the early beliefs of any culture to see such an important element taken away. However, there is no reason to actually have these events. The moon is important in this cycle The position of the moon between the sun and your fantasy world it important. Even if it passes between the sun and your planet it might be too small to blot out the sun. If you have no moon what would cause the eclipse, maybe it is a back of sky wolves. Your world, your rules! Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com The bigger benefit for me was increased focus. S1 Ep 191Episode 191 3 Methods to create your fantasy world

E

Today's Topic Creating a fantasy story from a world I have been asked several times what is the best way to start a new world building project? The problem is that is not one good way to start. However, in general, there are three good ways to construct a fictional world. The 3 Methods of worldbuilding In this week's episode, we will walk you through how to figure out the best way to build your world. You will end up with one of these methods. Backwards Top-Down Hybrid The Backwards method of worldbuilding I do not mean it is backwards or wrong to use this method, stop being such a wordsmith. I mean work backwards to develop your world. Take the settings that you want to tell stories in and work backward in history, so do not evolve but devolve your world. I really like working backwards if I know how I want the world to look at some point of the story. I use it to give the world some historical details and more cultural depth and I know when I am done when I get to prehistory and I have covered all the basics of worldbuilding. Top-Down method of worldbuilding Top-Down is typically the method people think about world-building. You pick a point of time and evolve the history to a certain place and time you want to tell the story in your world. You can start from the beginning of time or better yet in the prehistoric period of your world and evolve the world in increasing detail to flesh out the frame for your story. The Hybrid method of worldbuilding This is probably the most likely version to be used. You will go back and forth in time depending on the topic until you have fleshed out the frame for your story. Why should I world build more than the exact time and place for my story? There might not be a need. However, it will help connect you better to the world and give you access to a certain depth that will make your world feel like it could really exist outside of the story making it feel naturalistic. It also helps create a framework for you to tell more stories in your world later if you wish. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com The bigger benefit for me was increased focus. It was another major issue of mine. However, that is a story for a different day. Get the stories and hear the tips in this episode of the Worldbuilder's Anvil Podcast Listen to Michael and I as we go into this critical topic. Ep 190Episode 190 The crap we forget when fantasy world building

E

Today's Topic Creating a fantasy story from a world So you have created your hero, villain, geography, cultures, kingdom, and monsters. However, when you look at your fantasy world it still feels like something is missing. Something is just flat. And your fictional fantasy world just seems….FAKE!!! What can I add to make my fake world with magic seem real? If you really want your world building to shine, add in details that make it seem real. Show how and where the weapons are made. Make the princess escape through the sewage enter. Have a look of poop dumped on the villain's head. The places of civilization are dirty… no they need the dirty to exist. Take advantage of those place to add real world connections that people can make use of. Does your fantasy thieves guild run the local dump. Do they use the dirty elements need for a city to pilfer from it? We are focusing on the dirty in this episode. However, significant details do not have to smell bad; some details can smell great. The area's food is made can feel alluring. Try walking in a place like Hannover Street in Boston and not have your mouth water. Good details take you beyond what is needed They are the smells, the sights, the sounds, the sensations, and the tastes that the people who interact with your fiction know. Worldbuilding is more than creating items for your world. When you create a fictional prop, make sure people can use all of their senses to better immerse into your fictional world. Ep 189Episode 189 Considerations when writing about polarizing topics

E

Today's Topic Writing about polarizing topics in the age of the internet Watching the current political and cultural issues can be scary for people considering sharing stories or their creativity. Listen to the episode to get our take on the issues that are most likely to caused polarized reactions from people who read you're your stories. However, here is a few ideas that you need to understand Give understanding to people who are upset by your art. You should put your words, feelings, and emotions into your story. It will make it better. But keep these ideas in mind. Don't just do it to be a jerk Do not react to negative criticism Research topics, do not rely on your gut to get the topics right Be understanding to people who are upset Stand by your art! Wait! How do I stand by my art if I am not supposed to react????? When someone attacks you or your art. Do Not react, but you can respond. Do not let your initial emotions, rule your response. If you get into areas that are polarizing. Even if you did not understand it would be a problem. Look through the criticism to make sure there is nothing that could help you in the future. Respond with what your intention was with your logic not in emotions to the criticism(s). I would respond to legit criticism. However, some of the people criticizing might also just be looking for attention or trolling you. Pay attention to the actual arguments! Learn what you can and understand that some people will be offended and allow them their feelings. Avoid response to people who do not care about discussing the topics. The most important thing to remember! The world is very connected. If your book or art is noticed, expect it to get criticism. Especially with polarizing issues. We should stand by our art, but learn and improve going into the future. Even if our argument is valid does not make it correct for all people in all circumstances. And sometimes we can be wrong in at least part of our ideas. Sometimes we are right, other times we are wrong, and worse of all we might not even understand something is a problem. If we are wrong, owe it and grow from it. Understand that people will be offended before you start and even if we change going into the future does not make the art we have done wrong. It is fiction. Finally, I will be the first person to call fiction lying. It does resemble reality. And as long as humans are imperfect, our ideas and art will be flawed as well. So love your art, and understand what it is. Your art. Episode 184 Develop your Fantasy Royal Court

E

Today's Topic What is a fantasy world without an Imperial or Royal Court Outside of the magic, one of the most common features of the fantasy genre is the royal court. It might be the seat of power to the forces of good or the focus of evil. Or there could be a good and evil court. Queens and Kings are here to stay For whatever reason, people even in modern liberal democracies are still enthralled with these relics of the earliest civilizations. Some courts appear with minimal trappings, and others seem to be extraordinarily complex. All of the courts have a few things in common The build around the royal family The leader will appoint prominent positions Ceremonies will be used to reinforce the position of the queen or king And typically, the structure will be mimicked by other influential people in the realm. The aristocracy or powerful commoners will set up their courts to prove their power, even when they are working to improve their positions in the Royal court. Do not fly too close to the royal sun However, as the smaller courts rise up, the King or Queen will often claim certain rights to themselves. If those rules are trespassed on, it could cause a conflict with the monarch. Episode 183 The Rules of your magic system, part 3

E

Today's Topic A look at the first four rules of the magic system So now we covered the basics of magic systems in episode 181, and we covered the first 4 questions in part of this series in episode 182. Let's finish up our magic system in this episode. The first 4 questions are about the details that make your magical system feel real. However, that is not all you need for a system that feels like it exists. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com A magic system needs more You magically system needs limitation. Without limits, magic can just solve every problem without the conflict which creates the interest to finish stories. It is the same problems that cause people to enjoy or play in games as well. Limits on a magical system can create interest in multiple ways First, all-powerful characters are just boring. I mean Superman needs to have weaknesses or no one would read the comic. If you do not limit magic, anyone that can control it becomes all powerful character; therefore, should dominate your stories and make them boring. Also, It gives you new ways to create tension. Think about a character who can use magic to solve a problem. However, if they use magic they would have to sacrifice their daughter. How much emotion does that add to the story? Also, If the magic fails, and the daughter's life was sacrificed for nothings, how would this affect your character going forward. Magic systems are important to fantasy However, I would recommend that you do not overthink it. The more effects and limitations you interweave the best system ever can also make the use of magic impossible or be boring for those interacting with your stories. Episode 180 Spider-man Homecoming? How does he keep sticking around?

Today's Topic How a teenage boy has stuck around for so long? Worldbuilding is not only the big parts of a fictional world, the cultures, maps, and states. It is the details. I would argue that the characters of a world, or the faces as I like to call them are the most important detail. However, this is a discussion for a different podcast episode. Let's skip to Spider-man! Spider-man homecoming is a great reason to look at one of the best fictional characters Spider-man was born in august on 1962. Episode 177 Create your fantasy in pain

E

Today's Topic How to create fantasy and worldbuilding when pain or disease get in the way My back started killing. I was having trouble standing. My wife stood over me; her frustration turned into tears. She had won. Her tears are the most pervasive argument I heard. I felt ashamed. I had let my pride control me. I was a warrior, a scout for the US Army. I could work until my body broke. I did not believe that the point would ever come. I was 32; I still felt invincible. However, lying in bed watching my wife in tears that that point had come. I had broken myself. If I can achieve in pain, anyone can The next several years it all got worse. My knee when out, my pain spread from my left foot to my neck. And then I started losing my confidence and suffering from anxiety. My anchor, Kristin got sick as well. She called me and told me she had cancer. She could not work. Our non-mortgage debt grew to $220,000. We had trouble paying for our house. I had to beg for money to pay for our mortgage which was larger than our non-mortgage debt. Then we learned the secrets that saved us from bankruptcy and saved our marriage We were not defenseless, we had jobs that paid well, we loved each other deeply, and we are fighters. However, we had those things when we stumbled into our spiral. We knew we that more was needed. We first started to focus on our dreams, Kristin and I needed to look to our future together. It is what led us to create our Dream Catcher Assessment. However, more on topic it prompts me to search desperately for ways to mitigate my chronic pain issues. I am not a doctor. However, I will share with you what worked for me. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com Chronic pain and illness is not weakness it is a condition Now, I am not a Pollyanna. I know there are not always cure and some of the lead to the worse possible condition of death. However, I am a fighter. I have dreams I am working towards and want to get to them. I have accepted that the pain will never end at first. My medical issue will not cause death. However, death can come at any time and since I am a fighter I have embraced these conclusions and use it as fuel to keep me working even when the pain hurts the most. The one thing you must worry about As humans, we are all capable of manipulating people. We are best at manipulating ourselves. When you suffer from chronic pain or illness, you do have real limitations. We owe it to our dreams to create, we owe it to our loved ones, and we owe it to ourselves to learn our actual limitations and respect them. We cannot punish ourselves for not being able to achieve what we want. However, we also need to make sure that when we feel like Kristin and I cannot do it, it is because we actually cannot do it. So often fear and anxiety can creep in and help hold us back from creating the fiction of our dreams. Great News! Chronic pain and illness does not mean you cannot leave towards your dreams Kristin and I have thrived since she got past her cancer. We have eliminated our non-mortgage debt. We have successfully created her accounting firm and Ingram Digital Media, Inc. I started working full time with this company in March of 2017. We could not do it on our own. We worked with many doctors and professionals to help us. We researched and learned how to improve our physical and mental health. Kristin is layering in changes to help us live better lives. It was not always easy. However, it is possible. The 3 keys to creating fantasy and fiction when suffering from chronic pain or illness Awareness, Preparation, and Execution are the key stratagems that have helped me move from a burnout veteran to a full-time author, podcaster, and educator. The Awareness tips Test all your limiting assumptions (Talk to doctors and other professionals when needed) Never neglect meals, unless you are on a special diet. Eat three plates of food a day Drink water, early and often Realize the chronic conditions are cyclical. Track how you feel, it will help let you know what comes next Always be honest with yourself. The Preparation tips Know what you need when you are getting worse, or in bed. Stretch as much as possible Have tools and supplies at hand. Ask for help if needed The Execution tips Take the #15minute Challenge If you have an hour to work and do not feel up to it. Promise yourself to start. Work for 15 minutes if possible Take a picture of yourself starting and share it with me on Facebook.com/gardulstories or Twitter @JefferyWIngram I will share out the ones that are the best! Keep your humor! Don't punish yourself Remember the pain or problem will ebb and flow in life. The surprise benefits of managing my pain The first is a substantially increase in energy. I have more energy when I suffer from pain and lots more energy when I am not suffering from pain. The bigger benefit for me was increased focus. It was another major issue of mine. Ho

Episode 174 Why the world needs your world

E

Today's Topic How reading and fiction help in more ways than entertainment If you are anything like me. You feel a bit guilty when you set a side time to create fictional work. Best case scenario in our minds is that we create something that enough people enjoy to help us feed our families. However, the reality is that it could take years to build up enough fans to start writing full time as a fiction author. And for most of the people I know who write creating good books can feel more like a resource drain than an investment in our future. We need to realize our fiction is more than just entertainment Reading books actual paper books is a good thing for people to do. And reading books that entertain people can help in more intangible ways than non-fiction books. However, most people do not know the intangible benefits of writing fiction. Episode 171 The Taboo in your fantasy world

Today's Topic How I failed at understanding taboos until I started researching this episode I always overthought what a taboo was. I focused on the idea that taboos are these forbidden ideas, but how do you create them. How do these ideas form in a culture? Some, like murder, seem to be universal. However, others will be very culturally specific. Some taboos seem to be old cultural norms. Wait, you are saying that some taboos use to be considered cultural norms Yes, and this is the secret that made me realize the true pattern needed to create cultural taboos. They are much more simple than forbidden acts in a culture. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com The secret pattern to create taboos original to a fantasy culture The truth in all of the research I have done is most taboos are really things as small as impolite and end in the death of people break them. And they seem to form up in 4 categories: The negatives to important cultural norms Extra holy acts Reactions to changes in religion State embracing cultural outrage Wiki has a great place to start looking at taboos. Taboos should be easy You had done all the hard work when you created the history, cultural norms, the state, and the religions of your fantasy world. Episode 170 Subculture Why?

E

Today's Topic First look into types of subcultures in fantasy worldbuilding If you have followed the show you would not that Jeffery is a huge geek about studying cultures. We have talked about cultures and how they evolve in many ways. We have even spent time talking about how cultures can form into states in your world. We really just love looking at naturalist ways to fake a world. Sometimes culture is just too superficial As you drill into a fantasy world, you might find that a fictional setting my not seem richly developed. It probably because as cultures even very small cultures usually start coming up with their own inner divisions. In the world, we live in we often think of subcultures in our own culture. If you are my age you could never forget the jocks versus geek divide in high school. However, we usually do not consider those to be subcultures of the subculture of high school students. There is a very good reason If you get my example above, it might seem apparent why so many only add in the classic fantasy subcultures: Thieves guild Fighters guild Mage Guild Temples of various religions Evil cult Now, I have nothing against fiction that relies on these tropes. However, the goal of the Worldbuilder's Anvil is to build more natural looking BS. So, what the heck it a subculture? A subculture as I define it is a part of a larger culture where enough people share a different set of cultural norms derived from the greater culture. A subculture is larger than a group of people, so large that no individual can completely control the direction it moves and people. People outside of the group who know of would know of it should have heuristic beliefs about the group. Or more simply, subcultures grow out a culture's population as it food surplus allows for the sophistication grows. Join Michael and Jeffery in this episode as a look into the basic patterns of subcultures. Episode 169 The Total Beginner's Primer to writing

Today's Topic Starting your writing journey Writing is the second most important skill a worldbuilder can know. Curiosity is still the most important skill. Writing is invaluable to a worldbuilder, because you hone your delivery skills and immerse yourself in the world you are creating. It does not matter what medium you share your work. The benefit comes from the exercise you mind receives when writing down the details of the world. You need not ever share your writing to become a writer. However, if you ever want to share the art of your worldbuilding you need to become a writer. Please Subscribe, Rate and Review us on iTunes For complete Fantasy Worldbuilding, show notes go to Gardul.com The only two things that a writer need to do? You only need to do two things to become a writer. Reading and Writing. You need to spend time reading great works. Not as a fan, but you are looking to find how the writer accomplishes. You are just looking for the brushstrokes used by authors to deliver their stories. I think Jeff Goins summed it up really well in his article, "Why Writers Need to Read if They Want to Be Good". Don't read to accomplish anything. Study language. Read what others are reading. Remember, your reading as a writer is not about genre. Personally, I avoid reading new fantasy novels at this point when I am writing. I am looking for writers of other genres to inspire me with different ways to deliver words on the page. The next step If you need to improve your reading comprehension or writing skills, even after you start practicing those skills. Do not give up. Look for others to help you. Writing circles Beta read for others Look for online courses from authors you respect Look for more academic help through classes from colleges or through places like Great Courses Plus. Author vs writer? Now, I do not believe writers have to be published authors. However, if want to share your content online in any form. You need to add more writing to your routine. You might want to write novels, short stories, or RPG adventures; or you might want to simply make videos, share art, or do a podcast. All of these types of creatives should write. However, if you are in the first group. Those people who will deliver their art through the written word. You need to start reading and writing every day. Episode 158 Breaking through writer's block

Today's Topic Using Writing Prompts and Free Writing to practice and improve writing skills Have you ever had a great idea for a story or a novel., you sat down excited and filled with anticipation open up your app then placing your hand on the keyboard and freeze. I have. It the worst type of writer's block I suffer. I write my story as it happens. Once I get into the flow, I am off to the races until I pick it up again. Writer's block begins the real problem Once I get stuck, I freeze then the voices of a fear kick in and stop me. You suck at writing. Stop wasting your time. However, the voices are wrong. I am not wasting my time. If I want to achieve my dreams.. I need to write. I need to write every day. It is part of the job of my dreams. Ignore the voices I wish I could say that it was easy to ignore the voices. However, I have spent years listening. I would close the writing program and click on steam or play on Facebook. Possibly getting me depressed as I read thousands of political post from my republican or democratic friends and family. Freewriting and writing prompts stopped the voices of fear I learned if I ever wanted to improve my writing skills. I needed to write. If I could not write what I planned, I would use free writing and writing prompts to write through the time I had. I also found that once I started, the story would naturally pick up and start flowing again. Episode 156 Building You As A Dream Character

Today's Topic Starting reaching your goals by dreaming big Do you dream big? I do not mean for your fiction, but about your life. To be honest, I use to as a child. I was going to space as a fireman cowboy and nothing could stop me. Or so I though, Aging and gaining responsibilities took over my life as they have taken over the lives of so many other people. I stopped dreaming big. I stopped planning and I started playing safe. Is it wrong to stop dreaming? Yes. It helps make our live small. It helps us live with regrets. We live with the knowledge that we have stopped even trying. We might or might not end up unhappy. I was perfectly content. However, I know when I reached my deathbed I would have many regrets in my life. I needed to start dreaming again. My wife, Kristin, and I came up with a way to start the process of living a life that made us work towards our dreams Introducing the Dream Catcher Assessment We developed the Dream Catcher Assessment, so we could find we could once again have a child-like view of our life, but come up with and adult plan to start trying to achieve our dream vision of ourselves.
