Snack 7: How to Turn Dreams into Team Wins: The Leadership Glow-Up You Need

Today, we’re talking about something anyone could use at any given time: a leadership sprucey spruce. If you want to turn team dreams into company wins, you’re in the right place. The Problem: Why Teams Are Not Engaged Ever feel like your team is running on autopilot? Like they’re doing just enough but not really bringing their A-game? It’s not because they don’t care—it’s because they don’t feel like their ideas matter. They’re waiting for permission to be bold. And guess what? You can give it to them. The Solution: The Out-of-the-Box Improv Hack You Need In today’s Snack, we’re shaking things up with a little game called The Fortune Teller Brainstorm. Here’s how it works: Have each team member write down a big, wild dream they have for the team—think moonshot ideas with no limits. Fold them up, toss them in a bowl, and randomly pull one out. As a group, pretend it’s five years in the future and this dream has already happened. How did you get there? What steps did you take? Just like that, you’ve turned a dream into a game plan. Try this in your next meeting and watch how quickly your team starts thinking big. Journal Prompts to chew on: What’s the wildest dream I have for my team’s success? How can I create a fun way to encourage new ideas? Who on my team needs a confidence boost today, and how can I give it to them? Snack 6: How to Turn Career Mistakes into Growth

Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It’s time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday. Today, we’re talking about something we ALL have in common: mistakes. Yep, those cringe-worthy, face-palm moments that keep us up at night. But guess what? Your mistakes aren’t just embarrassing bloopers; they’re your greatest career growth hacks. So, what do we do? We improvise, using the The "Next Line, Please" Hack. What it is: In improv, when a scene stalls or someone blanks out, we use a simple trick: we ask for the next line. Instead of panicking, we literally turn to our scene partner and say, "Next line, please?" and they feed us something to work with. How to use it in real life: Ever been in a meeting where you completely blank on what to say? Or maybe you’re giving a presentation and your brain just short-circuits mid-sentence? Instead of freezing or rambling, do this: Pause. (Silence feels longer to you than it does to them.) Take a breath. (Gives your brain time to reset.) Ask for the ‘next line.’ This can be as simple as: "Can you repeat the question?" (Buys time and refocuses.) "Let me gather my thoughts for a second." (Gives permission to pause.) "That’s a great point—can you expand on that while I process?" (Keeps the conversation flowing.) This breaks the pressure of perfection and allows you to regroup without the awkwardness. Try it today! When you get stuck, don’t force it—just ask for the next line. If you’re interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The 5-Minute Team Commitment Reset here. Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It’s time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and playfulness to brighten your workday.Today, we’re talking about the power of play. When was the last time you truly played pretend? Not just faking enthusiasm for Bob’s homemade cookies at the office potluck—but really letting your imagination run wild like you did as a kid. That same playful energy can transform your team. Too many teams are stuck in “work mode” 24/7. They’re afraid of looking silly, stressed, overwhelmed, and holding back ideas. The stats don’t lie:Only 32% of employees are engaged at work. (Gallup)76% of employees don’t feel psychologically safe to take risks. (Harvard Business Review)Your team is playing it safe instead of playing to win. But today, we’re changing that with a simple improv hack: The Superhero Power Exercise. How it works:At the start of your next meeting, tell your team: “Today, you’re a superhero with a power that makes you unstoppable at work.”Give them 30 seconds to think of their superhero name and work superpower.Captain Collaboration—uniting teams in a single boundDeadline Destroyer—crushing timelines before they even startGo around the room (or Zoom) and have each person introduce themselves in character.Bonus points for striking a superhero pose. Why this works:Breaks the ice and makes people comfortableTaps into creativity and shifts thinkingInstantly changes the energy in the roomTry it out and watch your team loosen up and engage. Snack 4: How to Use Humor to Inspire Your Team

Hey, hey, Workday Playdate peeps! It’s time for your quick bite of leadership wisdom—a little boost of inspiration, energy, and of course, playfulness to brighten your workday. Today, we’re talking about one of the most underrated leadership tools: humor. That’s right—if you want to build connection, trust, and motivation within your team, you don’t need a corporate retreat or a 100-slide deck. Sometimes, all it takes is a well-placed joke, a moment of levity, or the courage to not take yourself too seriously. Want to add more fun to your leadership style? Try this improv-inspired game: The Mis-Translation Game Pick a ‘translator’ and a ‘speaker.’ The ‘speaker’ delivers a serious workplace announcement—but in complete gibberish. Example: “Gloobity blop floo fandango periwinkle!” The ‘translator’ must confidently ‘interpret’ what was just said. Example: “Ah yes, that means today’s meeting will be catered by an army of penguins!” Rotate roles and let the laughter flow. Why does this work? Because it helps teams embrace the unknown, think on their feet, and find joy in the unexpected. And a team that laughs together? That’s a team that trusts each other. Take it further: Reflect on a leader who used humor to inspire you. What did they do? What’s one way you can bring more humor into your leadership style this week? How can you create an environment where your team feels safe to have fun? And don’t forget—next up, we’re going even deeper with JaMarr Johnson, the "Entrepremedian" who helps leaders use humor to build stronger workplace cultures. You don’t want to miss it! Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? What’s one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it down—and take action. Snack 3: Build a Stronger Team with This Improv Move

It’s time for your Workday Playdate snack—just a quick bite of leadership wisdom before we go deeper on Wednesday. Today, we’re talking about empathy—the leadership skill that turns good teams into great ones. Want a quick and easy way to help your team feel heard? Try this improv-inspired exercise: “Last Word, First Word” One person starts with a simple sentence. Example: “Our team is growing fast.” The next person must start their sentence with the last word of the previous sentence. Example: “Fast changes require clear communication.” Keep going around, building off each other’s words. Notice how this forces people to really listen and build on what’s being said—just like in a strong, empathetic workplace. Why does this work? Because it shifts conversations from waiting to speak to actively responding. And that’s where trust starts. Journal Prompt: Who on your team might be feeling unheard? What’s one small way you can make space for their voice this week? Write it down—and take action. If you’re interested in taking one small action right now, you can check out our newest freebie, The Empathy Cheat Sheet here. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs have been a driving force behind innovation, employee retention, and workplace culture—but now, many companies are slashing these initiatives, leaving employees feeling unseen, unheard, and disconnected. In this solo episode of Workday Playdate, Erin dives into the corporate DEI backslide and the very real consequences of these cutbacks. But she’s not here to dwell on the problem—she’s here to talk solutions. And here’s the twist: one of the most effective (and unexpected) ways to rebuild belonging, inclusion, and collaboration might just come from the world of improv. From psychological safety to leadership development, Erin unpacks how improv training fosters trust, empathy, and innovation in the workplace—and why now, more than ever, companies need to rethink how they create cultures where people thrive. Here’s what’s inside: Why Cutting DEI is a Costly Mistake—Real data on how eliminating DEI initiatives is impacting businesses and employees. 275: From Hot Mess to Goal-Getter: Real Talk on Intentions

What if the secret to empowering your team and reclaiming your day wasn’t about setting more goals, but about leading with intention? Imagine turning your 'hot mess' moments into clear, purpose-driven leadership—this framework will show you how. 1. Self-Reflection: Know Your "Hot Mess" Moments Before you can set meaningful intentions, you need to identify where you are today. Effective leadership begins with self-awareness. Take time to reflect on your strengths, blind spots, and the patterns that hold you back. For instance, imagine a manager overwhelmed by endless meetings and tasks, only to end the day feeling unproductive. This "hot mess" state often stems from unclear priorities, not time management. To help uncover these habits, try the "Mirror, Mirror" improv exercise, where leaders mirror each other’s actions to build awareness of how their behaviors impact their teams. Authentic leadership begins with understanding yourself—and research supports this, showing that self-aware leaders build trust and reduce employee turnover. 2. Define Clear and Purposeful Intentions Goals focus on what you want to achieve, but intentions emphasize how you want to show up along the way. Instead of setting a goal to "increase team communication," focus on an intention like "fostering a safe space where everyone feels heard." This shift to intention-driven leadership makes goals more sustainable. Use the "Yes, And" improv exercise to layer intentions onto your leadership goals. For example, if your goal is to improve one-on-one meetings, your intention could be to "build deeper trust during those conversations." Studies from Gallup reveal that leaders with a clear sense of purpose are significantly more effective at engaging their teams. 3. Turn Intentions into Actionable Plans Intentions are only impactful when paired with concrete steps. If your intention is to "lead with empathy," plan to check in with each team member weekly for 15 minutes. The "Obstacle Course" improv exercise is a playful way to practice this, as participants map out their intentions while navigating unexpected challenges. This highlights the importance of creating triggers—such as calendar reminders—to stay consistent. Studies on implementation intentions show that linking actions to specific cues boosts follow-through by 91%. When intentions translate into daily habits, leadership growth becomes inevitable. 4. Maintain Flexibility and Adaptability Leadership rarely goes as planned, so adaptability is key. When unexpected challenges arise—like a project derailing due to budget cuts—a flexible leader adjusts the execution while staying anchored in the original intention. The "New Choice" improv exercise demonstrates how to pivot in real-time while preserving your core purpose. Leaders who model resilience not only solve problems more effectively but also inspire innovation within their teams. Harvard Business Review reports that adaptable leadership leads to 30% higher innovation rates. 5. Reflect and Iterate: Progress, Not Perfection Finally, remember that intentions aren’t "set it and forget it." Consistent reflection allows you to refine your approach. For example, a manager who struggles to mentor staff regularly may pivot to bi-weekly group mentoring sessions instead. Celebrate lessons learned with the "Failure Celebration" improv exercise, where leaders share moments of missed intentions, reframing them as growth opportunities. This iterative approach to intention setting boosts long-term leadership efficacy by normalizing progress over perfection, as highlighted by the Center for Creative Leadership. Final Thoughts By applying this five-step framework, you can unlock a new level of mindful leadership that empowers both yourself and your team. Pick one intention to focus on this week, and reflect each evening on how well you honored it. Share your progress on social media or within our improve it! community to inspire others. 273: Hey, Overthinkers! Let’s Simplify Your Intentions

Are you stuck in the endless loop of overthinking? Maybe you’ve rewritten the same email five times, hesitated to act on a great idea, or turned your to-do list into a novel. Overthinking doesn’t just waste time—it keeps you from living fully. In today’s episode, Erin tackles how to break free from the analysis paralysis and take intentional, meaningful steps forward. Here’s what you need to know: 1. The Problem with Overthinking Overthinking might feel like preparation, but it often paralyzes us instead. As Erin discusses in the episode, overthinking shows up as rehearsing perfect outcomes, hesitating to act, and losing momentum. It’s like being in an improv scene where second-guessing kills the energy. For leaders, this habit can hold back both personal progress and team performance. Life, like improv, doesn’t follow a script, and trying to control every detail often leads to frustration rather than fulfillment. 2. Start with Your “Why” The first step in simplifying your intentions is finding your purpose. Erin compares this to an improv game where you identify the core idea driving the scene. By clarifying what truly matters to you, you can focus on meaningful goals. Try this exercise: If your life were a play, what would the main character (you!) want to accomplish in this act? By anchoring your goals in purpose, you’ll cut through distractions and stay aligned with what’s most important. 3. Focus on 1–3 Key Areas One major takeaway from the episode is the power of focus. Just as too many ideas on stage can ruin an improv scene, too many goals can dilute your energy. Erin recommends choosing 1–3 focus areas that align with your “why.” For example, you might prioritize improving relationships, advancing professionally, or nurturing self-care. By narrowing your focus, you’ll achieve clarity and make meaningful progress without feeling overwhelmed. 4. Break Goals into Micro-Actions Big goals can feel daunting, but breaking them into micro-actions makes them manageable. In improv, scenes are built line by line—and your goals should work the same way. If your intention is better self-care, start with small, actionable steps, like setting aside five minutes daily to stretch or meditate. Progress builds momentum, and every small win moves you closer to your larger vision. 5. Progress Over Perfection Finally, embrace the improv mindset of progress over perfection. No one delivers the perfect scene every time, and no one achieves their goals without a few missteps. Celebrate small wins along the way and view challenges as opportunities to pivot. In the episode, Erin shares an exercise to overcome mental blocks: shout out the first word that comes to mind to break the cycle of overthinking. It’s a simple, effective way to get unstuck and take action. Final Thoughts Overthinking keeps us in our heads, but action moves us forward. Simplifying your intentions is about doing what matters most. Today, take one intention you’ve been overthinking and break it into the simplest, smallest action you can take. Whether it’s sending an email, jotting down your goals, or taking a five-minute breather, start now. Remember, the magic happens when you leap. What’s your first step? Share your intention with Erin by tagging her on Instagram (@itserindiehl) or sending an email ([email protected]). 272: How Can You Eliminate Imposter Syndrome to Optimize Your Performance with Victoria Jenn Rodriguez

Imposter syndrome—two words that can stop even the most ambitious professionals in their tracks. But what if we told you that it’s not a roadblock, but a signal of growth? In today's episode, Erin sits down with the inspiring Victoria Jenn Rodriguez to flip the script on imposter syndrome. Victoria reveals why feeling like an imposter can actually be a good thing, and shares powerful strategies for overcoming self-doubt while leveling up in life and work. Here are five standout lessons from Erin's convo with Victoria: 1. Imposter Syndrome is a Sign of Growth Victoria Jenn reframes imposter syndrome as a cause for celebration rather than concern. Experiencing self-doubt often means you are stepping into spaces that challenge you, stretch you, and encourage growth. She highlights how even high-profile figures like Michelle Obama and Jennifer Lopez have publicly acknowledged grappling with imposter syndrome, proving that these feelings are universal. 2. Recognizing the Signs Victoria Jenn outlines key indicators of imposter syndrome, such as feeling like a fraud despite your accomplishments, attributing success to luck, or dismissing significant achievements as "no big deal." These symptoms can manifest as constant anxiety about failing or feeling undeserving of your role. She encourages listeners to acknowledge these feelings as valid, but to challenge them by reflecting on the hard work and dedication that led to their success. 3. External Factors Amplify Imposter Syndrome Erin and Victoria’s discussion touches on how societal pressures and unique challenges—especially for women and women of color—can intensify imposter syndrome. Victoria Jenn emphasizes the added complexity of biological factors, such as hormonal fluctuations, postpartum, or perimenopause, which can exacerbate self-doubt. She reassures listeners that these feelings are not only normal, but also a testament to their ambition and resilience. 4. The Power of the "Don’t Panic Framework" To combat imposter syndrome, Victoria Jenn introduces her Don’t Panic Framework, starting with self-awareness. She encourages identifying situations that trigger self-doubt and addressing them head-on. A standout strategy is building a “Badassery Committee”—a trusted group of 5-7 supporters who remind you of your worth and accomplishments. She also emphasizes the importance of mirror self-talk to internalize confidence and view yourself as the person you aspire to become. 5. Consistency Breeds Confidence Victoria shares her personal journey of overcoming imposter syndrome while launching her podcast. Despite initial fears and doubts, she committed to taking consistent action. This approach not only led to measurable success, including 11 million impressions and interviews with notable figures, but also reinforced her belief in her abilities. Her advice is clear: keep showing up, even when it feels uncomfortable. Progress and consistency will ultimately dispel feelings of inadequacy. Victoria’s insights serve as a powerful reminder that imposter syndrome is not a limitation, but a stepping stone. By celebrating growth, challenging self-doubt, and leaning into supportive communities, we can all rise to meet our fullest potential. Listen to the full episode to discover how to transform imposter syndrome into your greatest ally. Final Thoughts Imposter syndrome doesn’t stand a chance when you’ve got the right tools, mindset, and support system in place. Thanks to Victoria’s empowering insights, it’s clear that those feelings of self-doubt are just growing pains on the path to greatness. So, the next time you feel like an imposter, remember: you’re not just in the room—you belong there. Research by Gallup shows that 70% of employee engagement is directly tied to the quality of their manager. Setting a clear "why" can transform mundane tasks into meaningful contributions. During the launch of I See You!, the improve it! team dedicated time to align their purpose with their goals. Erin’s team’s decision to hold a goal-setting session by the Charleston waterfront exemplifies how changing the environment and mindset can spark inspiration. A surprise visit from a ladybug became a symbolic moment, reminding them that joy leads to serendipitous success. Actionable Tip: Incorporate small rituals of joy, such as sharing weekend highlights on Slack or starting meetings with a funny meme, to boost team morale. 3. Master Goal-Setting: Move from Vision to Action Effective leaders bridge the gap between vision and execution through structured goal-setting. The SMART framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) is a proven method, with a 42% higher success rate, according to a study by Dominican University of California. During the I See You! book launch, Erin and her team set an ambitious goal of reaching 10,000 readers—a target that was both measurable and aligned with our purpose. Naming their ladybug "OprahGabby2024" and creating a hashtag around it infused fun and focus into this vision. Actionable Tip: Start your week by setting one SMART goal for yourself and your team. Break it down into smaller tasks and track progress. 4. Overcome Leadership Challenges with Intention Leadership is not without hurdles, from burnout to team conflicts. The key to overcoming these challenges lies in staying intentional. Tools like mindfulness practices and feedback loops can keep leaders grounded and connected to their teams. At improve it!, Erin and her team regularly set monthly intentions and check in with team members to understand their needs. This consistent effort fosters psychological safety and reduces resistance to change. Actionable Tip: Schedule a 10-minute reflection session at the end of each day to assess wins and areas for improvement. This practice helps maintain focus and adaptability. 5. Commit to a 30-Day Leadership Challenge Small, intentional actions compound over time, creating significant impact. In the episode, Erin encourages listeners to commit to a 30-day leadership challenge—such as starting meetings with gratitude or setting weekly SMART goals—to build positive habits. These practices improve team morale, engagement, and productivity, one step at a time. Actionable Tip: Choose one intentional leadership practice to implement over the next 30 days. Track your progress and share your experience with your team to inspire collective growth. Final Thoughts Intentional leadership is a journey, not a destination. By focusing on purpose, sparking joy, setting clear goals, and addressing challenges with intention, you can lead your team to thrive under pressure. As we learned from our community question, maintaining positivity starts with the small, deliberate choices we make every day. Ready to take the next step? 267: Warning: This Vision Setting Strategy Might Actually Work!

What if the success of your team hinged on a single, powerful choice: which wolf you feed? Inside every leader lies the potential to cultivate either chaos and confusion or unity and inspiration. The secret? A clear, compelling vision that your team not only understands but wholeheartedly embraces. In this episode of the improve it! Podcast, Erin delves into the transformative power of vision-setting for leaders. Borrowing wisdom from the story of the Two Wolves, she explores how leaders can shape their team’s trajectory by fostering a vision rooted in hope and purpose. Whether you’re leading a small group or steering an entire organization, this episode equips you with actionable steps to craft a vision that inspires action, fuels alignment, and drives long-term success. Below, are five key takeaways from the episode if reading is more your jam than listening—it can act as your roadmap to feeding the right wolf and unlocking the full potential of your team: 1. Start with the ‘Why’ Every compelling vision starts with a purpose. Erin discusses how a strong vision isn’t just motivational; it’s a strategic foundation for success. Using real-life examples, Erin illustrates how top-down, uninspiring visions (think jargon-filled monologues from “Chad the Boss”) fail to connect with teams. By contrast, involving your team in the vision-setting process ensures alignment and fosters enthusiasm. When leaders invite collaboration, they empower their teams to co-create a vision that resonates deeply and inspires action. 2. Define What Makes a Vision Great Not all visions are created equal. Erin breaks down what separates a vague, uninspiring statement from a clear, actionable vision. For example, Google’s mission to “organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful” stands out because it’s specific and aspirational. Leaders can use similar principles to ensure their visions are not only ambitious but also meaningful and aligned with their team's purpose and values. The clearer the vision, the stronger the rallying point for your team. 3. Engage Your Team in the Process Collaboration is the secret sauce for creating a vision that sticks. Whether through interactive workshops, brainstorming sessions, or even fun activities like sketching vision boards, engaging your team fosters ownership and excitement. Erin highlights the “yes, and” brainstorming method to generate ideas and refine them collectively. By involving your team, you’re not just setting a vision—you’re building trust and driving alignment. 4. Communicate the Vision Effectively Even the most inspiring vision won’t resonate if it’s poorly communicated. Erin shares practical strategies for making your vision memorable, including storytelling, emotional connection, and creative delivery methods like campaigns or fun memes. The goal is to ensure that every team member feels the vision in their core and understands their role in bringing it to life. Passionate, clear communication transforms your vision into a unifying force. 5. Keep the Vision Alive and Evolving A vision isn’t static—it’s dynamic and should grow with your team. Erin emphasizes the importance of embedding your vision into daily operations and regularly revisiting it. By setting quarterly goals (or “rocks”), celebrating small wins, and adapting as needed, leaders can ensure the vision remains relevant and inspiring. This ongoing focus keeps your team aligned and motivated, even as challenges and opportunities evolve. Conclusion: Feed the Right Wolf As leaders, the vision we choose to feed determines the future we create. By crafting a clear, inspiring vision and involving your team in the process, you set the stage for alignment, motivation, and success. Ready to take the next step? 266: What Does It Take for Women to Gain Respect, Power, and Influence in the Workplace? Alison Fragale Spills the Tea

What if the key to unlocking your full potential wasn’t just about working harder or climbing the ladder, but about understanding the invisible forces that shape how others see you? In today's episode, Erin dives into a transformative conversation with Alison Fragale, an expert on power, status, and the subtle art of influence. Her groundbreaking insights from her book, Likeable Badass, offer a powerful roadmap for navigating life’s unspoken rules with authenticity, strategy, and even a little bit of fun. In this episode, Erin and Alison unpack the dynamics of power and status, revealing why they’re more than just workplace buzzwords—they’re the foundation of how we’re perceived and what opportunities come our way. Alison explains why respect is the true currency of influence, how life can be approached like a game, and why caring about what others think of you is not just normal but essential. Whether you’re navigating office politics, tackling imposter syndrome, or simply striving to show up as your best self, this conversation is packed with practical wisdom you can use to level up. Here are 5 big takeaways to chew on: 1. The Essence of Power and Status Alison began by distinguishing power from status: Power: Control over resources that others value (e.g., a boss deciding promotions or a parent holding car keys). Status: The respect and value others assign to you. She explained that while power is significant, status often precedes it. Respect and value lay the foundation for obtaining resources and authority. Without respect, people hesitate to entrust others with power, even if they technically qualify for it. Key Takeaway: "Resources follow respect." Gaining power often starts with earning the respect of others. 2. Status as a Playful Game Alison introduced the concept of status as a "game" using an insightful definition: “A game is a problem-solving activity approached with a playful attitude.” She encouraged adopting this mindset when tackling unfair or challenging situations. Though life's "games" (e.g., gaining status or respect) can be unjust, they can also be approached with creativity and enjoyment. By doing so, we can reclaim agency and find joy even in adversity. Key Takeaway: Life may not always be fair, but embracing a playful approach can make navigating status challenges more manageable—and even enjoyable. 3. Challenging the “Don’t Care What Others Think” Mentality Alison debunked the common advice to "not care what others think," labeling it as misleading and counterproductive. Humans are inherently social beings, reliant on their "audience" for validation and interaction. Instead of ignoring feedback, she encouraged understanding and influencing your audience. This nuanced perspective bridges authenticity with strategy: staying true to yourself while recognizing how others perceive you influences your outcomes. Key Takeaway: Don't obsess over others' opinions, but don’t dismiss them either. Learn to influence perceptions strategically while maintaining authenticity. If you’re curious to learn more about external validation vs. Internal confidence, check out this episode, too: Episode 247: Validation vs. Confidence: What's the Real Difference? A Chat with Nicole Kalil 4. The Likable Badass Framework Alison introduced the concept behind her book title, Likable Badass, rooted in the two critical dimensions of status: Capability (Y-Axis): Competence, decisiveness, and the ability to get things done. Caring (X-Axis): Warmth, sincerity, and consideration for others. Everyone aspires to be seen as both capable and caring, and those who embody both traits earn the highest respect. The title encapsulates this balance in a catchy, empowering way. Key Takeaway: Strive to be both capable and caring. This sweet spot not only aligns with authenticity but also enhances how others perceive and respect you. 5. Overcoming People-Pleasing Tendencies Alison tackled people-pleasing behaviors, which often stem from a skewed emphasis on caring at the expense of assertiveness. People pleasers prioritize others’ happiness, often sacrificing their own. She emphasized that true status requires balancing caring with self-assertion, ensuring mutual respect rather than one-sided compromise. Key Takeaway: To overcome people-pleasing, assert your needs alongside your care for others. Authenticity paired with assertiveness builds respect without self-sacrifice. Closing Thoughts Alison’s insights offer a fresh lens on navigating the complexities of status and power. By blending authenticity with strategic action, we can shape how others perceive us and create the outcomes we desire. Whether you aim to become a "likable badass" or simply want to navigate life's "games" with more joy, these principles can guide your journey. How will you use these strategies to elevate your status and unlock new opportunities? Let us know in the comments below! 265: Breath Control for Better Decision-Making: A Conversation with Samantha Skelly

What if the secret to conquering chaos, leading with confidence, and transforming stress into ease was as simple as your next breath? This week on the podcast, I sat down with breathwork expert Samantha Skelly to uncover the transformative power of intentional breathing. As the Founder of Pause Breathwork, Samantha Skelly is on a mission to help others unlock their infinite potential though breathwork. And her next big focus is making breathwork accessible & affordable to humanity, worldwide. From hilariously relatable mishaps (like sending a 10-year-old email to thousands) to life-changing strategies for managing energy and embracing joy, Samantha shared tools that could shift how we approach work, leadership, and even self-healing. Here were some of my favorite topics that we covered in the episode: 1. Managing Emotions Through Breathwork Samantha introduces the concept of consciously choosing your breath pattern to influence how you feel. Instead of letting anxiety take control, she suggests asking yourself what you want to feel, like confidence or clarity, and then adjusting your breath accordingly. By using deep, intentional breaths, you can activate the parasympathetic nervous system (the “rest and digest” state), helping you feel grounded, even in high-stress moments. Btw, if you’re looking for another breathwork expert on the pod, I think you’ll love this one with Erin Telford: The Art of Breathwork: Mastering Self-Love and Living Fully with Erin Telford 2. Real-Life Example of Breathwork Samantha recounts an intense experience right before recording this episode, where an old, out-of-date email was accidentally sent to her entire mailing list. She describes feeling an initial surge of rage, then using breathwork to regain her composure and approach the situation with clarity. By taking two deep breaths and extending the exhale, she shifted from a “fight-or-flight” response to a calmer, problem-solving mindset. 3. Shifting Mindsets from Stress to Ease I reflect on my own experience with stress in building my company, improve it!, sharing how I used to view stress as a badge of hard work. In response, Samantha offers a framework called LIFE: Lucrative, Impactful, Fun, and Easy. She encourages business owners to allow success to feel easy and fulfilling instead of always hard-earned, emphasizing the importance of self-love and creating a business model that sustains rather than drains energy. For all things breathwork and how to start incorporating it into your daily routine (and why you should!), listen to the full episode. 264: Want an Easy Five Minute Gratitude Practice You Can Implement Today? We’ve Got Your Back!

What if five minutes could change everything about how you lead, connect, and thrive? In today's episode, I reveal the powerful daily gratitude practice that shifted my mindset from scarcity to abundance—fueling not only my own growth, but transforming my team dynamics and leadership resilience. If you’re ready for a simple, impactful habit to elevate your life and work, this post is for you! Here’s a quick look at how gratitude can revolutionize your life and leadership, just as it did for me. 1. Gratitude Enhances Mental and Emotional Well-Being Gratitude has profound effects on mental health, reducing anxiety and depression while boosting overall mood. In this episode, I begin by sharing how this practice helped me refocus from a scarcity mindset—where stress and fear of “not enough” clouded my vision—to one of abundance and peace. Listing just a few daily “wins” and things I’m grateful for gives my mind a positive focal point and sets the tone for my day. Practicing gratitude helps you focus on what you have, rather than what you lack, cultivating a mindset that energizes and uplifts both you and your team. And if you’re looking for more info on forming an abundance mindset, I think you’ll love this ep: Episode 202: Self Worth = Net Worth: How to Live in Abundance 2. Fostering Team Relationships through Gratitude Integrating gratitude in a team setting doesn’t just enhance your day, but strengthens your team dynamics. I found that a simple habit of sharing appreciation with my team, both in private conversations and during meetings, lifted our collective spirit. This genuine acknowledgment brought cohesion and positivity to our interactions, boosting communication and morale. With everyone aligned and motivated, our work flowed better, and the energy shifted toward collaborative success, building a work environment that supports growth and achievement. 3. Building Resilience as a Leader With gratitude as a grounding practice, I noticed an increased resilience to daily challenges. For instance, when obstacles like travel delays or sudden issues arose, my gratitude practice allowed me to pause, reframe, and face these situations with a calmer, more adaptive mindset. Instead of letting stressful moments dictate my mood, I embraced each challenge as a lesson, focusing on what was still within my control. This approach not only supported my emotional regulation but also set a positive example for my team, showing them how to navigate challenges effectively. 4. Long-Term Leadership Impact Sticking to my gratitude practice has had a long-lasting impact on my leadership style, making me a more empathetic, balanced, and approachable leader. The effects extended beyond my professional life, enhancing my relationships as a parent, spouse, and friend. Embedding gratitude into your routine has a ripple effect—it supports personal growth and allows you to lead from a place of compassion and joy, ultimately making a positive impact on your entire team and community. 5. Start Your Own 5-Minute Gratitude Practice The episode outlines a straightforward gratitude practice: reflecting on past wins, listing things you’re grateful for now, and setting intentions for the day. This five-minute habit can be done verbally, digitally, or in a journal and serves as a daily reset, focusing your energy on the positives. By committing to this practice, you’ll find shifts in mindset and improved emotional regulation that benefit your leadership style, relationships, and personal growth. To dive deeper, listen to the full episode, and discover how gratitude can transform your leadership and inspire those around you. And if you remember nothing else from this gratitude practice, remember this: what you focus on grows. Start each day by honoring the good, and watch how it attracts more positivity, resilience, and connection into your life and leadership. Ep 241241: Are Vulnerable Leaders More Effective? Exploring the Research with Jacob Morgan

What does sharing your “gaps” have to do with vulnerable leadership? More than you think, and Jacob Morgan is here to explain what that means. Jacob is a 5x Best-Selling Author, Futurist, & Keynote Speaker on Leadership, Employee Experience, & The Future Of Work. In today’s episode, Jacob joins Erin to discuss why he not only has work life values, but family life values as well; the difference between being vulnerable and leading with vulnerability; and how to not just talk about your mistakes, but work to solve them, and also be okay with making more mistakes as you work to solve them. Jacob shares an actionable step you can take today to embrace vulnerable leadership—and it has something to do with building your own “vulnerability mountain,” setting up “camp,” and taking the steps to climb it. If you’re interested in the new era of vulnerable leadership—this is the episode for you. Special sprinkles on top of this episode: times when your vulnerability can be used for you and times when it can be used against you. What is the value of being a vulnerable leader? It's about being honest about struggles, needs, and values. Leaders who embrace vulnerability create a culture where team members feel empowered to be honest and ask for what they need. This authenticity fosters a sense of connection and trust, laying the foundation for a more inclusive and innovative team. -LinkedIn How vulnerability can be a leadership superpower? Vulnerability, often misunderstood as a weakness, is, in fact, a superpower that can transform relationships, foster trust, and inspire change. It is the willingness to be open, honest, and authentic, even in the face of uncertainty and discomfort. -Coactive If you liked this episode, you can keep the party going with: Episode 80: You CAN give feedback as a Leader, and it CANNOT be triggering with Kim Scott Show Links: Purchase Erin’s book, I See You!
