Show Notes

In this podcast, Spill The Tea with Womenkind Collective, we explore topics effecting our health and well-being with inspiring women who are raising their voice and driving positive change. Our guest today is, Joanne McKinlay she is a fierce advocate for those suffering with chronic UTIs. With the shocking figure that 85% of chronic UTI cases are in women and girls there is a huge gender health gap in treatment of this debilitating condition which is estimated to cost the UK economy £400 million per year. Living with a chronic UTI has been described as, ‘a mental health crisis’ with sufferers enduring long term constant pain and unable to live a normal life.

Joanne McKinlay was 16 years old when she had her first UTI, which unknown to her would be the start of a life changing condition resulting in hospital admissions, being under the Urology department of an NHS hospital for 8 years and enduring treatments for conditions she did not have, contracting sepsis after one procedure and finally having to go to a private clinic to get the diagnosis that had been missed for most of her adult life. She is now on a regime of Hiprex and is starting to get her life back.

Joanne runs support groups, a charity and a counselling practice for chronic pain and those living with a chronic UTI, she is a regular in the media when it comes to advocating for chronic UTI’s.

It’s an open and warm chat with invaluable signposting for anyone that has suffered with a UTI or wants to know more about living with a long term undiagnosed condition.

There’s your comments, a new WI which we have changed to stand for (weekly inspiration) to give you some good news stories that you might have missed, and there’s a beautiful quote to send you off into the week.

It’s an episode brimming with chat and all the usual sweary shenanigans! So, go and get the kettle on and settle in for our weekly collective chat while we spill the tea!
