S1 Ep 13Bakari Sellers' Vanishing Country: Is It Worth Saving?

This week, Danielle talks with Bakari Sellers – friend, activist, CNN Political Analyst, youngest elected official in the South Carolina Legislature, and author of new book, “My Vanishing Country: A Memoir.” Danielle and Bakari dig into the content, the inspiration and the process of bringing “My Vanishing Country” to life, one that allowed him to put his trauma on paper in the hopes of giving black people a sense of recognition and pride and providing white folks with a road to understanding. Bakari emphasizes the importance of revealing trauma and facing the daily acts of violence and racism that persist within this country. Battling any disbelief or willful ignorance around these realities is essential to creating meaningful understanding and change. Danielle asks Bakari the question that continues to haunt her – Is America worth saving? Bakari resounding answers that he knows it is and that his hope and faith will not be extinguished. In order to honor all those that have fought before us and to propel the country into one that he envisions his twins’ freedom to live peacefully and fully, Bakari remains committed and hopeful. He hopes to create conversation and change by uplifting activists and movements, sharing his trauma and successes, his motivation in response to his own fears and anxieties, and his commitment to living his full, unapologetic, black truth for all to see and hear. S1 Ep 11Who Are The Power Worshippers? with Author Katherine Stewart

In a politically fueled PM Mood, Danielle Moodie speaks with author and journalist Katherine Stewart, whose crucial work examines how America has been on a path to ending the established barriers between church & state. In her new book The Power Worshippers: Inside the Dangerous Rise of Religious Nationalism, Katherine emphasizes how the rise of the religious right wing is in fact the rise of a political, nationalistic movement that is at its core anti-Democratic, anti-pluralistic, and anti-equality. Danielle and Katherine discuss the ways in which the movement united religious denominations, conservatives and fringe extremists under key issues such as abortion in order to consolidate voting power and how Trump has become the movement’s anointed broker in reshaping our democracy. They also dissect our leadership’s handling of the ongoing pandemic, rooted in the movement’s political and religious rejection of science, expertise, and infrastructure. Despite the uphill battle we have ahead, Katherine sees growing discontent with the status quo, awareness, and activism as a cause for hope and motivation.
