Ep 391WCI #391: The Student Loan Roller Coaster

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair." A Tale Of Two Cities tells the story of a French doctor's 18 year imprisonment in the Bastille and today we borrow it's famous opening lines as Dickens so accurately and accidentally provides the perfect assessment of the current federal student loan landscape for American doctors facing what can feel like the 10 year imprisonment of Public Student Loan Forgiveness. Certified Student Loan Professionals Tyler Scott and Andrew Paulson take a look at the current landscape to provide insights and considerations for those worried about the status of the SAVE plan, the upcoming election, and the myriad variables that underlie navigating federal student loans in the fall of 2024. Today we are talking with someone near and dear to us at the White Coat Investor. Cindy was the first employee at White Coat and has been working here helping Dr. Dahle make WCI what it is for over 10 years. As she was riding her bike to work and skipping on buying the fancy new car her coworkers thought she was a little nuts. She also took advantage of the student loan freeze and saved roughly $40K a year in interest by continuing to pay down the debt during that time. After the interview we will be talking about Target Date Funds. As a white coat, you have valuable knowledge. Various companies want that knowledge. And they're willing to pay you for it! Ep 388WCI #388: The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need With Andrew Tobias

This episode we interview Andrew Tobias, the author of The Only Investment Guide You'll Ever Need, which has sold over a million copies and was influential in our financial education. We discuss financial plans, changes in the financial world during his career, crypto, venture investing, meme stocks, inflation, and high earners' financial mistakes. See full show notes here https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/the-only-investment-guide-youll-ever-need-with-andrew-tobias I estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Ep 387WCI #387: Common Sense Investing With Rick Van Ness

This episode we interview prominent Boglehead published author Rick Van Ness. Rick has made a career of teaching financial literacy to the world. We review his ten principles for common sense investing as well as hear why Rick thinks bonds are worth investing in. He talks about his current passion, which we here at WCI understand, getting a financial plan in place. We discuss the importance of knowing what you value and making a plan that accounts for that. Getting quality disability and life insurance should be the first financial chore for a doctor to complete. Most docs don't have the ideal policy for their gender, specialty, state, or health status and 1 in 7 doctors get disabled at some point during their career. Because these policies can only be purchased through brokers, we have put together a list of vetted agents who are experienced with working with the specific needs of medical professionals and who have your best interest at heart. If you have questions about insurance and what kind of policies would be the best fit for you, check out our insurance recommended list at https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/insurance and feel the peace of mind that comes with knowing you have the optimal policy in place. MtoM #190: Pediatric Dentist Hits Net Worth of $6 Million and Finance 101: Expense Ratios

Today we are talking with a pediatric dentist who hit a net worth of $6 million dollars! He is barely over a decade out of training. He started out in general dentistry and realized pretty quickly he wanted to specialize to increase his earning potential and enhance his lifestyle. He is a supersaver who is working on increasing his spending. His advice to you is to start educating yourself now on basic financial knowledge and to get in the habit of living on less than you earn. After the interview we will talk about expense ratios for Finance 101. I estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Today our podcast producer Megan is stepping in as host and is joined by longtime friend of WCI, SC Gutierrez. They are talking about why women are generally less involved in finances than men and what can be done about it. They discuss different ideas around how to get your partner more involved, regardless of their gender, in setting financial goals. They talk about the impact of the way we are raised, the importance of intention and delegation and so much more. MtoM #189: Emergency Medicine Doc Hits $2 Million Net Worth and Finance 101: HSAs

Today we are talking with an ER doc who hit a $2 million net worth. He talks about the importance of him and his wife getting on the same page early and getting to work growing their net worth and getting rid of debt. His advice to you is consider geographic arbitrage, increase your savings every year and take advantage of loan forgiveness programs. Stick around after the interview for a discussion about HSAs for Finance 101. At some point in our financial lives, it will be time to buy a home. A physician mortgage can be a good vehicle for a young doctor who's just out of school and has a more effective place to use their money than on a big down payment. These loans allow doctors to secure a mortgage with fewer restrictions and a lower down payment than a conventional mortgage. But if you're further advanced in your career or deeper into your journey to financial freedom, buying a home with a conventional mortgage and then, later on, potentially refinancing that loan to a better rate with a shorter time frame could be a great move. Wherever you are in your financial journey, make sure you use the mortgage that will be most financially beneficial for you. Our guest in this episode is Dr. Karsten. He's the mind behind the Early Retirement Now blog. He completed a PhD in economics, worked for the Federal Reserve for a while and taught economics. He joined the research department of an investment manager and got a CFA designation. He spent 10 years there before punching out to live the FIRE lifestyle a few years ago. He spent the first few months out on a world tour, visiting 20 plus countries, then settled down in the Northwest with his family. Early Retirement Now is a popular FI blog primarily because of Karsten's rigorous academic approach. Ep 380WCI #380: Michael Kitces on the State of Financial Planning

Today Dr. Dahle talks with Michael Kitces, creator of the popular blog Nerds Eye View. He is a CFP (along with many other designations) who has a passion for educating. His platform is huge and he knows more about financial planning and the financial planning industry than just about anyone out there. Today they tackle a range of topics with the higher level focus on the state of the financial planning industry. Michael shares valuable insight on how to find a trust worthy advisor, why he thinks there are so many fewer women working in the financial advising industry, if therapy training should be required for financial advisors and if the good guys in the industry are winning in the court of public opinion. We know you will love those topics and so many others from todays conversation. If you're like most doctors, nobody taught you anything about personal finance or investing during your undergrad, professional school, or residency. And even though your family - and perhaps even your business - rely on you to be the Chief Financial Officer, you have never been given the tools to succeed. Enroll in WCI Financial Boot Camp, a FREE educational email series, and learn to convert your high income to wealth. You will learn the basics of investing, saving, insurance, and more. Your high income alone will not lead to financial success, but as always, we want to help you on your financial journey. Go to https://www.whitecoatinvestor.com/financialbootcamp to sign up today! Ep 378WCI #378: Marketing Your Practice

Today we are talking with Marita Mccahill of PracticeGro. Marita shares her expertise around the importance of learning how to market yourself online as a doc, as well as how to market your practice. We discuss the impact of online reviews, changing jobs, and growing your practice. Whether you own your own practice or are a W2 or 1099 employee, there is something for everyone to learn on this one. MtoM #181: Dental Specialist Pays Off Student Loans and Finance 101: The Truth About Investing

Dental Specialist has paid off just over $489,000 in student loans just two years out of training! He took the Fire Your Financial Advisor course and created a written financial plan before he finished training. The first six months out of training he focused on paying off his car, credit card debt and and a loan from family. Then he aggressively went after his loans and was paying over $20,000 a month to get rid of those loans! He said he was worried about taking on so much debt but feels like it was very worth it because he loves what he does. Stick around after the episode for a discussion on the truth about investing. I estimate that 80% of doctors need, want, and should use a financial advisor and/or an investment manager. Some investment gurus such as Dr. William Bernstein think my estimate is way too low. At any rate, if you want to use an advisor temporarily or for your entire life, there is no reason to feel guilty about it—just make sure you are getting good advice at a fair price. Ep 377WCI #377: Tax Payments and Savings

Today we are answering your questions from the speak pipe. We discuss quarterly estimated payments and the safe harbor rule. We cover tax loss harvesting and not letting the tax tail wag the investment dog and if you should ever change your asset allocation for potential tax savings. We talk about travel expenses and tax implications that come with that, reducing adjusted gross income and what to do when you do not couple match into residency. Those questions and more in this episode! Ep 373WCI #373: Getting Paid Fairly

Today on the podcast we are talking with Kyle Claussen from Resolve. He chats with Dr. Dahle about the importance of really advocating for yourself and your pay when starting a new job and signing a new contract. It is critical to negotiate until you feel confident and happy with any contract you sign. Many doctors are not paid what they are worth because they do not advocate for themselves. They discuss how helpful it can be to hire a professional to navigate that process. They also discuss non compete contracts and what the future might hold when those are no longer legal. Ep 371WCI #371: Which Accounts Will Make Your Kids Rich?

Today we answer your questions about rolling over an HSA, when to withdraw from your HSA, whether a UTMA or Custodial Roth IRA is better for your kids, if it is a good idea to open a solo 401(k) for your kids, how to maximize your 403(b) contributions and how to mimic the US Stock Market index fund if your 403(b) doesn't offer that.
