He originally started martial arts at nine years old under the instruction of Fourth Dan (degree) Black Belt, Shihan Tony Kitson of Young Champions, and Sensei Fred Erolin (father, Tang Soo Do influence). Renshi Matt rose through the ranks very quickly in a system that typically took students seven to eight years to achieve First Dan Black Belt. Sensei Matt accomplished it in five-and-a-half years, achieving Second Dan Black Belt two years later. He did all of this while excelling in other activities such as baseball and music. Hanshi Jerry Piddington is a martial arts practitioner and founder of the American Karate Academies National Association. There's no police in our industry. Zero police. It's all about the rules. If you play by a specific rules, you can get something done. But the rules change in all the different organizations. Hansi Jerry Piddington - Episode 720 Hanshi Jerry Piddington has a martial arts career that spans five decades and has studied with some of the most famous martial artists in the world. His first teacher was Caylor Atkins, a Shotokan stylist. Mr. Piddington received his first black belt from Tom Crites in Shorin-Ryu. Continuing his career, Mr. Piddington trained in Hawaiian Kenpo with Michael Stone, Japanese Goju-Ryu with Chris Armstrong, Kempo with Ed Parker, and Shorin-Ryu with Master Tadashi Yamashita. Mr. Piddington was also a student and friend of O'Sensei Robert Trias, Father of American Karate. Grandmaster Robert A. Trias took notice of Hanshi Piddington and invited him to create the first American style of karate in the United States. On May 2, 1972, Mr. Piddington was declared the Headmaster and Founder of American Open Style Karate under the USKA sanctified charter, established by Master Trias, which was internationally ratified on May 30th, 1975. In February 2000 Mr. Piddington was declared Headmaster of American Shorei/Shorin Karate by Hanshi John Pachivas, Grandmaster of Shuri-ryu Karatedo, and was awarded his 10th degree black belt. Grandmaster Jerry Piddington founded American Karate Academies National Association (AKANA) in 1976. Hanshi Piddington enjoys acting in live theatre and stage combat. He has been a fight choreographer and stunt man in several major motion pictures such as Killer Inside Me, A Reason to Kill, Night Realm, The Quest starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Roger Moore, and BloodSport II starring Daniel Bernhardt, Pat Morita, and James Hong. He is currently filming a documentary and reality show based on his adventure to Cambodia called, When Two Masters Meet. In this episode, Hanshi Jerry Piddington talks about his legendary career. At the age of 8, he also began training in the youth boxing program at the local YMCA. Moving to Virginia in 1982, his stepfather opened the very first martial arts school here in Culpeper VA. Aric continued his Karate training, earning 3rd degree Black Belt in 1997. Aric has trained and competed in martial for over 45 years. Western Boxing, Full Contact Karate, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Praying Mantis Kung Fu. Martial arts and physical fitness are integral aspects of Aric's life. His passion for training is only matched by his love and commitment to his lovely wife Heidi and their four children. It's doing the best for yourself, making everyday a learning experience. It's making yourself better in every way, everyday. Shidoshi Ron Van Clief - Episode 698 Shidoshi Ron "The Black Dragon" Van Clief is a martial arts legend. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1943, where he started martial arts training in his early teens. Ron Van Clief served in the U.S. Marine from 1960 to 1965 with a tour in the Vietnam War in the year 1965. Following his military service, he became a New York City Transit Police Officer from 1965 to 1968. Ron Van Clief went on to become a five-time karate and kung fu world champion and a 15-time All-American Champion. He has competed in both full-contact and non-contact karate tournaments in New York and several national tournaments. His martial arts training began in the mid-1950s, which he later trained alongside Bruce Lee in Hong Kong and was nicknamed: "The Black Dragon". Van Clief was a student of Goju-Ryu masters Peter Urban, Frank Ruiz, and Moses Powell, as well as WingTsun founder Leung Ting Modern Arnis (Remy Presas) Brazilian jiu-jitsu (Joe Moreira). On December 16, 1994 he competed in the 4th Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 4) at age 51 against Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion Royce Gracie. Van Clief is an author and creator of a number of instructional books and video recordings, as well as film choreographer and actor appearing in several films. Ron Van Clief continues to conduct seminars and attend training with his son in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Which is that if I demand that you never challege me, you respect me… I create an environment where teaching my technique never gets tested and eventually I drift away from legitimacy… Scott Burr - Episode 696 Scott Burr is a second-degree black belt professor of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He is the first person to earn the rank of black belt from American BJJ pioneer and sixth-degree black belt professor Steve Maxwell. To date, he is one of only a handful of people to have earned the rank of black belt under Steve. Scott also holds black belt rank in Kodokan Judo (Nidan/second degree: Shodan awarded by representatives of the Konan Yudanshakai and certified by the Kodokan Judo Institute; Nidan certified by the USJA) and the Korean art of Kuk Sul Do (jo kyo/first degree, awarded and certified by Federation President and Grandmaster Choon Shik Yang). He has trained extensively in Muay Thai, Western Boxing, and Submission Grappling. Scott is a Level 1 certified Ginastica Natural instructor under system founder Professor Alvaro Romano. He is also a MaxwellSC-certified Pro Trainer and holds Level 1 and Level 2 certifications in both the MaxwellSC Kettlebell and Bodyweight Training systems. He has traveled all over the world with Steveófrom El Salvador to Croatiaóassisting at seminars on everything from joint mobility to breathwork to kettlebell training to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. You will also find him in many of Steve's instructional videos as Steve's assistant and designated demonstrator.
