S6 Ep 282Episode 282: The Great American Bash 1997

E

We are firmly into the NWO era of WCW, and this edition of the Great American Bash had plenty of highlights. Led by the feud between the Macho Man Randy Savage and Diamond Dallas Page, the Bash of '97 had some fine matches. Additionally, in action were the Kevin Nash and Scott Hall with Syxx against Ric Flair and Roddy Piper, Akira Hokuto meeting Madusa, Ultimo Dragon (known here at the Ultimate Dragon versus Psychosis and Kevin Greene facing Steve McMichael (yes, they had a very good match). S6 Ep 281Episode 281: The Great American Bash 1996

E

This will go down as one of the better WCW Pay Per Views ever. It had the debut of Rey Mysterio, Jr. in a classic against Dean Malenko. Lord Steven Regal and Sting had a tremendous one-on-one encounter, Ric Flair and Arn Anderson went to battle with Kevin Greene and Steve McMichael, the Giant and Lex Luger squared off for the world title and Chris Benoit and Kevin Sullivan had a unforgettable falls count anywhere match. But the most memorable part was when Kevin Nash and Scott Hall power bombed Eric Bischoff through the stage. We relive the moments of the last WCW mega event before the formation of the NWO. S6 Ep 279Episode 279: Impact 05-19-11 Bischoff and the Young Bucks

E

We take you back to 2011 as Impact was a strong product in the wrestling world. The roster was AMAZING: Cactus Jack, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Sting, Kurt Angle, Jeff Jarrett, Eric Bischoff, the Young Bucks, Matt and Jeff Hardy, Samoa Joe, Amazing Red, Bully Ray, AJ Styles, Bobby Roode, Tommy Dreamer and on and on and on. But 11 years ago, Eric Bischoff and Matt Hardy, in this episode, beat the Young Bucks. It's worth a look and a look back at how wrestling has changed a decade later. S6 Ep 278Episode 278: WCW Slamboree 1997

E

What a difference a year made in the life of World Championship Wrestling! In last week's podcast we looked back on Slamboree 1996, an event most fans hated. A year later? Most everyone loved Slamboree 1997. The advent of the NWO had a lot to do with that, but so did the return of Ric Flair after being off for eight months with shoulder problems. Flair teams with Roddy Piper and Kevin Greene of the NFL to face Scott Hall, Kevin Nash and Syxx in the main event. But here is so much more, including a great opening match between Lord Steven Regal against Ultimate Dragon, and others including Rey Mysterio, the Steiners, Dean Malenko, Jeff Jarrett, Chris Benoit, Meng, Konnan and MORE. S6 Ep 277Episode 277: WCW Slamboree 1996

E

Slamboree was originally an event that began in 1993 and was subtitled: "A Legends Reunion." The event was the brainchild of Dusty Rhodes, but in 1996 it looked nothing like the original one. The 1996 version featured Sting versus the Giant for the WCW World Title, Dean Malenko against Brad Armstrong for the WCW Cruiserweight Title and Konnan against Jushin "Thunder" Liger for the United State Title. It also featured a tag team "Lethal Lottery" with some sort of Battlebowl-Lord of the Ring-Earn a world title shot-nonsense. Hey, it was WCW, right? And it was pre-NWO, so there was plenty of nonsense, right? S6 Ep 276Episode 276: DX Invasion-WWF Raw 04-27-1998

E

This is arguably the most famous "Raw is War" ever. Not because it was the highest rated ever, but because it featured DX on the attack against WCW! The two sides, the two shows, were literally 24 miles apart with the WWF(E) at the Hampton Coliseum and WCW at the Norfolk Scope. So DX, led by Triple H, Billy Gunn, X-Pac, Road Dogg and Chyna recorded vignettes outside of the Scope, trying to get into the building where Nitro was being held. But the show was also famous for furthering the storylines between Stone Cold Steve Austin and Vince McMahon and between The Undertaker and Kane. It is an unforgettable and entertaining episode of Raw and another night where Vince McMahon was flexing his muscle in the ratings. S6 Ep 275Episode 275: World Championship Wrestling 04-18-1987 Crockett Cup

E

We go back to 1987 with some pretty memorable events. First of all, Magnum T.A. makes his first public appearance since his horrible accident in the fall of 1986. Secondly, we will see highlights from the Crockett Cup tournament in Baltimore won by Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff, and, finally, we will see the debut of the New Breed: Chris Champion and Sean Royal. Two young men who were ahead of their time and, had it not been for a car crash, would have probably become top stars. Additionally, we will see in action, Ron Garvin (as he beats up another poor soul), Brad Armstrong, Ric Flair, Arn Anderson, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, the Barbarian, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette and the Road Warriors. S6 Ep 274Episode 274: After 83 Weeks, Raw Beats Nitro 04-13-1998

E

While things were on the steep decline in 1998 for WCW, Vince McMahon and the WWE continued to grow. Then on April 13, 1998 something happened that shook the Monday Night Wars: Raw beat Nitro in the ratings for the first time in 83 weeks. Things were never the same, again. The main reason was the angle between Stone Cold Steve Austin and McMahon. But this edition of Raw had plenty of other moments and Superstars such as DX, the Rock, The Undertaker, Kane, the New Midnight Express, Sable and plenty more. We once again revisit an historic moment in professional wrestling. You can watch along with us by going to Monday Night Raw, Season Six, Episode 15 on Peacock. E

In honor of her 70th birthday (which is April 6th), we take a close look at the woman who has been with Tony Schiavone during his entire wrestling career. A very emotional but devoted, loving wife and mother of five, she was with Tony when he first decided to take the plunge into wrestling, during the move to WWE, the move back to WCW, the demise of WCW and more. Find out what was the low point in their lives (you might be surprised) and what was behind the move from Connecticut and back to Atlanta and WCW. But what about her? A lady who moved all over the world as a child and was a great student...plus discover what she decided to do with her double-major in college. Enjoy Lois Rules (even if she is old)! S6 Ep 272Episode 272: WCW Monday Nitro 03-29-1999

E

The Nitro ratings were tumbling, but that did not stop a very large crowd from coming to the Air Canada Center in Toronto in March of 1999. Why? Because Bret Hart was on the card with a memorable challenge to Goldberg. Also, Hollywood Hulk Hogan meets Diamond Dallas Page and their brawl goes on to destroy the Nitro set. Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko, the World Tag Team Champions have a great match against Kidman and Rey Mysterio, Chris Jericho faces Jerry Flynn plus Booker T. Konnan, Raven and so much more...including an appearances from Ric Flair and Kevin Nash. WCW was losing ground in the Monday Night Wars, but on this night the show was pretty good. S6 Ep 268Episode 268: WCW SuperBrawl II

It was a card loaded with talent, and one that saw the end of Lex Luger's run in WCW for awhile as he would bolt to the WWF. Here we have Cactus Jack, Steve Austin, Ron Simmons, the Steiners, Arn Anderson, Larry Zbyszko, Barry Windham, Arn Anderson, Beautiful Bobby, Sting, Luger, Ricky Steamboat, Rick Rude. Ricky Morton, Vinnie Vegas and more. But the match that "stole the show" was Flyin' Brian Pillman vs Jushin "Thunder" Liger. The Four Horsemen were dominate in 1986. So much so that to this day, wrestling fans worldwide know what you mean when you flash four fingers on one hand. But in 1987, the unthinkable happened. The crew of Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson and Ole Anderson (managed by JJ Dillon) had a problem and it escalated. We will take you back to relive that moment along with some other great stars like: Nikita Koloff, Dusty Rhodes, Ron Garvin, Lex Luger, Barry Windham, Jim Cornette, Big Bubba, Bobby Eaton, Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin and Precious and others. S6 Ep 265Episode 265: WCW WrestleWar 1990

E

It's the midst of the Jim Herd era in WCW and this seven match card had some good moments and some bad ones as well. The good featured a Ric Flair vs Lex Luger NWA World Title matchup that was basically a substitute match due to Sting's knee injury. Plus the Rock and Roll Express and the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette put on yet another tag team classic. Also featured are the Road Warriors, the Steiners, Doom, Kevin Sullivan, Buzz Sawyer, Cactus Jack, Norman, the Dynamic Dudes, Brian Pillman, the Z-Man, the Freebirds, Teddy Long and a pre-Undertaker wrestler named Mark Callous. A new decade begins with plenty of good and bad wrestling and plenty of turmoil for the TBS owned World Championship Wrestling. S6 Ep 264Episode 264: WCW SuperBrawl VI

E

The WCW Annual February event was a few months before the advent of the NWO. Packed with stars and some very bad matches, the pay per view event was not short on major talent. Two cage matches highlighted the event with Hulk Hogan meeting the Giant and Ric Flair going up against the Macho Man Randy Savage. The event also featured, Sting, Lex Luger, the Road Warriors, Konnan, the Nasty Boys, Diamond Dallas Page, Harlem Heat, Johnny B. Badd and more, but what it will most be remembered for is the "I Respect You" strap match between Brian Pillman and Kevin Sullivan. S6 Ep 263Episode 263: Royal Rumble 2017

E

We celebrate five (count 'em, five!) years of WHW with a look at the 2017 Royal Rumble. Back in January of 2017, Conrad Thompson brought Tony Schiavone's attention back to wrestling when this podcast began, and for Schiavone, this event--the 2017 Rumble--was the first wrestling program he watched since his departure from wrestling in 2001. So, this time we will watch it together. We will watch the WWE Championship match between John Cena and AJ Styles and then the 30 man Royal Rumble. It's a great look back, if for nothing else than to see how many athletes are still in the WWE or have moved on. Happy 5th to WHW and all of you who have been with us during this run. S5 Ep 262Episode 262: Clash of the Champions XVIII

E

This TBS special, which aired on January 21, 1992, pulled in the lowest ratings numbers of any of the "Clashes," but was, critically, one of the best ones that aired on TBS between March of 1988 and August of 1997. From the opening bout, featuring the Steiner Brothers against Vader and Mr. Hughes, to the final match with Sting and Ricky Steamboat meeting Rick Rude and Steve Austin, this program was LOADED. Also in action we will see Brian Pillman, Johnny B. Badd, Cactus Jack, Arn Anderson, Bobby Eaton, Larry Zbyszko, Dustin Rhodes, Barry Windham, Ron Simmons, the new Freebirds, PN News, Diamond Dallas Page and more. S5 Ep 261Episode 261: World Championship Wrestling-Lex Luger Debut 01-17-1987

E

We take you back to the TBS Studios in Atlanta in 1987 where we first heard from and then saw in action, "The Total Package" Lex Luger. Make no mistake, this was not his first time wrestling on television, as he had been a part of Championship Wrestling from Florida, but this would be his first time on a national broadcast. We will also hear from Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair, the Four Horsemen, the World Tag Team Champions--Manny Fernandez and Rick Rude, Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express, the Road Warriors and Ivan Koloff as he brings in Vladimir Petrov to deal with nephew Nikita Koloff (who has gone soft with the American way)! S5 Ep 260WHW Episode 260: Monday Nitro 01-04-99 the Finger Poke of Doom

E

It's' the Finger Poke of Doom! It's the "Butts in Seats" comment. It's all here! The reason WCW lost the Monday Night Wars. Not so fast! Even though those two incidents have resonated among wrestling fans for decades, the main reason WCW lost the war is actually all wrapped up in this episode. This Monday Nitro episode sucked! Even though on this show were legendary greats like Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, Charlotte Flair (as a young Ashley in the ring with her dad), Kevin Nash, Goldberg, Scott Hall, Konan, Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Jericho, Lex Luger, Scott Steiner, Buff Bagwell, Eddie Guerrero and more there were too many long, drawn out vignettes and too little pro wrestling. However, there is an interesting backstory to all this, and it has to do with the ratings when Goldberg finally made it to the arena. Enjoy! Learn more about your ad choices. Was this the end of the Rock and Roll Express era in JCP? In this very famous telecast Paul Jones issues a challenge for his men Rick Rude and Manny Fernandez to vie for the World Tag Team Championship. The result is an unprecedented four segment match in which Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson are dethroned! Also, surprise, surprise....Baby Doll is now the manager of the Midnight Express, in for an injured Jim Cornette. Starrcade is over and now the focus of JCP is the Bunkhouse Stampedes going across the country in December. However, this is a different show: no Ric Flair, no Four Horsemen, no Dusty Rhodes, but still plenty of action with a damn good main event. At the end we will see a 12+ minute match with Brad and Bob Armstrong against Jimmy Garvin and Bill Dundee. It was a match made right in the studio when Garvin and Dundee attacked Bullet Bob with a trash can. BUT, the trash can incident is edited out of this program. What remains though is a great impromptu match and a sensational Brad Armstrong interview. Great stuff from 1986. As we edge closer to Starrcade '86, the height and danger of the scaffold match comes into focus, and nothing sells it better than a rarely seen video of Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express prepping on the scaffold. It is GOLD and a must-see. Also, we will hear from Dusty Rhodes and Nikita Koloff, Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard and Rick Rude. Plus as a "hidden gem," the late Ricky Gibson (wrestling as Ricky Lee Jones) teams with Tim Horner against the Mulkeys and the finishing move by Gibson is WAY ahead of its time. S5 Ep 250Episode 250: World Championship Wrestling 11-08-1986

E

We jump ahead a week during our look back at JCP/NWA in 1986, because, basically, this is the next one available to watch. It's a good one, too. Chocked full of intense interviews from Ric Flair, Nikita Koloff, Jim Cornette, Wahoo McDaniel, Rick Rude and Tully Blanchard and matches from Gorgeous Jimmy Garvin, Arn Anderson and Brad Armstrong. All so short, that you might miss them if ya blink. However, the start of the program shows the iconic (can we use that word here?) shot of the pumpkins being throw off a scaffold by the Road Warriors as they get ready for the Midnight Express and "Starrcade '86: Night of the Skywalkers." Always great content leading up to Starrcade, and this was no exception! S5 Ep 249Episode 249: World Championship Wrestling 10-25-1986

E

The program begins with the famous scene in the parking lot of Jim Crockett Promotions where the Four Horsemen and JJ Dillon follow Dusty Rhodes and attack him; breaking his arm. Once the show begins, the announcement is made of Magnum T.A.'s tragic accident. The program tries to put a positive spin on it, but much is still unknown at that time. But the show itself is loaded. It includes, the Road Warriors making their challenge to Jim Cornette and the Midnight Express for a scaffold match at Starrcade, and Nikita Koloff coming to the ring, turning babyface, and helping Dusty in a very emotional angle. It's all here, the tragedy, the angles and the emotion as we head to Starrcade '86 "The Night of the Skywalkers." It is an exciting time, but also a trying time for JCP and World Championship Wrestling. On this edition we will begin our countdown to Starrcade '86 with the announcement of the first match. And to help sell that first match we will see an incredibly entertaining video from Jimmy Valiant and Big Mama. Plus, footage of the night Dusty Rhodes tried to break the leg of Tully Blanchard from Greensboro and Paul Jones' Army is at it again: first attacking Wahoo McDaniel and then turning on Baron Von Raschke. Finally, we will see the final interview from Magnum T.A. before his tragic vehicle accident. It's all here, and it's all about the great year of 1986. In this edition of World Championship Wrestling from 1986, we will see how the "Ragin' Bull" Manny Fernandez turned his back on Jimmy Valiant and went for the money to join Paul Jones. Also, "Ravishing" Rick Rude is in action for the first time as well as Brad Armstrong. Interviews as well from Dusty Rhodes, Arn Anderson, Ivan Koloff and. of course Jim Cornette. Also, Ronnie Garvin tries to reason with Fernandez, and Dick Murdoch dons a blonde (or silver) wig to make fun of Ric Flair! And that's what wrestling was back in 1986: fun. In this episode, the heat between the Midnight Express with Jim Cornette and the Road Warriors with Paul Ellering heats up with a big angle that is going to culminate at Starrcade '86. Plus, the interviews from Dusty Rhodes and Magnum T.A., Tully Blanchard, Ric Flair and Arn Anderson has more passion than ever. Why?
