Cohere, a generative AI startup founded by former Google researchers, seeks to raise over $500 million, aiming for a valuation between $5.5 billion and $6.5 billion. The company, established in 2019, focuses on custom AI models for enterprises, supporting tasks like website copywriting and chatbots for clients such as Dell and Notion. Cohere operates a cloud-agnostic platform, allowing deployment across various cloud environments. It has raised approximately $1.1 billion to date, with key investors including Nvidia and Index Ventures, and its last funding round secured $500 million in July 2024. Aidan Gomez, a co-founder, co-authored the foundational paper on attention mechanisms that influence many AI models. Cohere reported a doubling of annual recurring revenue, exceeding $100 million in May, while facing competition from major firms like Google and Microsoft. AI startups have garnered significant venture funding, with nearly 50% of U.S. funding in the past year directed towards AI, and Q1 2025 showing a record $59.6 billion in global AI investment, comprising 53% of total funding.
