Series A and B funding for U.S.-based companies increased by 34% year over year in the first half of 2024, reaching a total of $31.5 billion. This growth primarily came from larger fundings in healthcare, biotech, and AI sectors, with a notable $6 billion Series B round for xAI being a significant contributor. Despite this increase, a bottleneck in Series A funding since mid-2022 remained unresolved as seed-stage companies struggled to secure Series A rounds. The uptick in funding was driven by large rounds, particularly those over $50 million. Healthcare, biotech, and AI led these investment increases, with substantial contributions also from the Web3, energy, and hardware sectors. Financial services, e-commerce, and transportation saw significantly lower funding.
