The recent $100 million investment into Ethereum by BlackRock is seen as a sign of growing institutional tokenization on public blockchains. However, most tokenization is happening on private, permissioned blockchains, with major entities like BNP Paribas, JPMorgan, and the Hong Kong government showing interest. Tokenized assets’ liquidity on public networks has not met expectations in contrast to private networks, which are handling billions of dollars in daily transactions. Regulatory concerns also favor private networks, offering a familiar environment and easier compliance for financially institutionalized structures. In the current landscape, most institutional tokenization will likely continue on permissioned, private networks.
