"Controlled Demolition" Of Markets The Fed’s Endgame? | DiMartino Booth
You can make the argument that Fed policy was the largest single driver sending financial asset prices every higher over the past 10 years. You can also make the case that the horrible performance of both stocks AND bonds this year are due, as well, to the Fed reversing its easing policy, and embarking on a tightening regime. All, mind you, to combat raging inflation, which can also be argued the Fed is primarily liable for. And with the Fed now hiking rates and kicking on Quantitative Tightening, right as GDP started shrinking in Q1, will it pop the bubbles in the financial, housing and jobs markets, plunging us into recession? To find out, we have the good fortune of asking Danielle DiMartino Booth. Danielle is CEO and Chief Strategist for Quill Intelligence LLC, and was a former advisor to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas -- so she knows the Fed, as well as the people running it, very well. Weekly Market Recap: Is It Time To Sell?
Well, the SP500 officially entered bear market territory for the year today. How important a development is this? Does this mean those waiting for a relief rally will be disappointed? Is a further plunge in the cards? Not necessarily. Financial advisor Lance Roberts lays out the probabilities and shares how his firm is trading the recent volatility. He also reveals that he's concerned enough about the outlook for the housing market that he's putting his own home up for sale, and plans to rent for the next several years -- hopefully buying back in again at substantially lower home valuations. Price Controls? Government Trying Hard To Make Things Worse
It's said there's no problem so big that the government can't make it even worse. Beset now by raging inflation and supply shortages, governments around the world are scrambling to bring prices down and protect their economies. This is leading to a number of truly bad ideas – like price controls – that have a proven track record of failure every time in history they’ve been tried. More Market Weakness In Store For 2022 | Ted Oakley
Even though both stocks and bonds have had a dismal start to the year, most investors aren’t panicking yet. Instead, there’s a lot of talk about the bottom being near. And hope that much of the recent losses can be regained. That kind of optimism isn’t seen in a real bear market, cautions seasoned financial advisor Ted Oakley, Managing Partner and founder of Oxbow Advisors. Weekly Market Recap: Is This The Bottom? Did The Rally Just Start?
The markets finally got their long awaited bounce yesterday, after weeks of relentless selling off. So, is the bottom in? Has a relief rally just begun? It's too early to know for sure. But given the extreme oversold levels, it's certainly possible. We'll know more next week. Housing Bubble Warning From Federal Reserve Of Dallas
Interest in where the housing market is headed remains red-hot. Our video a few days ago with housing analyst Nicholas Gerli has been one of our most-watched of the year so far. Even the Federal Reserve itself is weighing in. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas recently released a report titled: "Real-Time Market Monitoring Finds Signs of Brewing U.S. Housing Bubble" Yes, you heard that correctly. Is The Fed Condemning Us To Stagflation? | Axel Merk
Markets remain quite bruised and battered as investors digest the results of last week’s Federal Reserve Open Market Committee decisions and Chairman Powell’s latest guidance. The Fed continues talking tough about its commitment to fighting inflation. Is it willing to sacrifice the markets in this pursuit? To discuss this, we welcome back Axel Merk, President and Chief Investment Officer of Merk Investments to the program. Axel is one of the most connected Fed-watchers we know, and he just spent time at a closed-door event with several of the top economic policymakers in the country, like former US Treasury Secretary and Director of the National Economic Council Larry Summers and James Bullard, St Louis Fed President. Weekly Market Recap: Time To Get Out Of The Market? Or Is A Rally About To Arrive?
Another emotionally exhausting week in the markets... Bonds continued falling and stocks are testing the year lows. Is it time to get out of the markets? Or is a relief rally from here more likely? Doomberg: Europe Can't Wake Up From Its Energy Nightmare
Energy analyst Doomberg returns to the program to explain just how cornered Europe is in terms of energy. Currently, it is dependent on Russia for natural gas that can't be sufficiently replaced by alternate means for at least several years. Europe will be forced to continue to remain vulnerable to its Russian supplier for the foreseeable future. Poor policy has led to this decision. Will Europe be able to chart a wiser course from here? Will the Fed really deliver on this? That's the key question that the future of the markets hinges on right now. David Hunter: Markets To Fall 80% This Year As Worst Financial Crisis Of Our Lifetimes Hit
Contrarian macro analyst David Hunter returns here in Part 2 of our interview discussing his bold prediction that the SP500 will meltup over the next 3-6 months, to be following by an epic market crash of 80% David sees very little safe harbor during the crash. Long-dated US Treasury bonds will likely perform best. Cash is a safe choice, as well. Gold will likely fall, though not as badly as stocks and corporate debt, David thinks. David Hunter: 40% Market Meltup Over Next 6 Months, Then 80% Crash
Few experts I interview generate as much controversy as today’s guest. He is a contrarian by nature, and so is most comfortable when his forecasts differ extremely from the consensus view. And despite today’s grim macro outlook of spiking inflation, rising cost of debt, a struggling consumer, inverted yield curves predicting recession – he is doubling down on his forecast that the SP500 will leap higher by 40-50% over the coming 3-6 months. John Mauldin: The Coming Recession/Bear Market Is Going To Create 'Marvelous' Buying Opportunities
Today we speak with the most well-connected economic networker I know, John Mauldin. John has published his own macroeconomic analysis for decades in his widely-read Thoughts From the Frontline newsletter, which in the process of doing his research for, brings him into contact with the people at the very top who run our financial and political systems – I’m talking about CEOs of the largest companies, managers of the largest institutional funds, Secretaries of State, Federal Reserve economists and the world’s top think tanks. I love talking with John because he’s a walking, talking Cliff Notes guide to what all these top experts are thinking right now. And given the fast-rising uncertainty of today’s world, being able to tap the collective wisdom of that brain trust is especially valuable. The Consumer Is Starting To Fail, Increasing Recession Risk
Consumer spending powers the economy, making up 68% of GDP here in the US. And, like it or not, much of that consumer spending is funded by debt -- credit cards, mortgages, auto loans, etc. But rising interest rates are now starting to make the cost of that debt more expensive. That trend, combined with increases in the cost of living caused by today's spiking inflation, is pinching folks' ability to borrow and spend. Weekly Market Recap: How Many Rate Hikes Until The Market Breaks? Will The Fed Then Have To Pivot?
This week Lance and Adam discuss whether the Fed has much runway or not to hike interest rates much further. Lance is of the mindset that it doesn't have much room -- that something important in the financial system will start to buckle once the Fed funds rate gets near 1% (it's currently at 0.25%). When that happens, Lance sees the Fed reversing course and returning back to Quantitative Easing in attempt to rescue things. Lance and Adam also enjoy a rant near the end of the discussion about Elon Musk's recent attempted purchase of Twitter and how it's revealing a lot of hypocrisy in how media and Wall Street operate in order to protect their current privilege. Ready For The 30-Year Commodity Mega-Trend? | David Knight Legg
Energy and geopolitical expert David Knight Legg returns here in Part 2 of our interview with him to discuss the mega-trend that will drive commodities higher for the next 30+ years: the movement of 1.5 billion out of poverty. As these people move towards a more middle class lifestyle (of developing world standards), the demand they will place on the world's natural resources -- especially energy fuels like coal, oil and gas -- will be tremendous. Investing in those commodities, the companies that produce them, as well as the companies that service those sectors, will likely be a winning strategy over the next several decades (i.e., the remaining investing lifetime of most people watching this video). Is The Ukraine War Actually An Energy Heist?
What if Putin didn't miscalculate? That's the question raised by a recent New York Times op-ed. What if his main objective was not regime change, but instead capture of Ukraine key eastern and coastal resources? For those of us interested in what's truly going on within the financial system -- the who, what, why and how behind it all -- there are few better sources than a highly-informed investigative financier with a talent for engaging storytelling. One of the best is Nomi Prins, former partner at Goldman Sachs turned financial journalist and author of such Wall Street exposés as the books All The Presidents Bankers and Collusion: How Central Bankers Rigged The World. Here’s an interview Adam recorded with her last month back in February, before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that we're now finally able to make available to the general public. We delve into the distortions the Federal Reserve has created in the markets, as well as Wall Street’s cartel-like stranglehold on our financial system – both of which will definitely make your blood boil a bit. Jim Bianco: Best Investments For Surviving Inflation
Macro researcher Jim Bianco returns for Part 2 of our interview with him on the Federal Reserve's conundrum: it can either save households by raising interest rates to fight inflation, or it can defend the markets. But it can't do both. Jim thinks the Fed is much more serious about raising rates than the market is currently pricing in. Right now, he recommends hard assets and short-term US T-bills. Jim Bianco: Recession Or Inflation - Which Will the Fed Choose?
These days, the Federal Reserve is walking a knife’s edge. High inflation is forcing its hand, and to tame it, the Fed has returned to Quantitative Tightening, hiking rates by 0.25% and promising 6-7 more hikes within this year. But if the Fed hikes too much too fast, it risks driving the economy — which has been slowing dramatically recently — into recession. A painful recession or persisting inflation. The Fed may very likely be forced to permit one in order to contain the other. If indeed faced with that choice, which one will Fed Chair Jerome Powell pick? For an answer to this vital yet very tricky question, we were very lucky to get the chance to sit down with macro researcher Jim Bianco. Gold Price Rise Just Getting Started As Mining Sector Heats Up | Jeff Clark
The price of gold hit an intra-day record high of $2,078.80/oz two weeks ago. Though the price has since retreated to $1,925/oz, GoldSilver.com's precious metals analyst Jeff Clark says that's just a healthy retracement and that he expects new record highs ahead. One reason for that is because M-A activity is finally heating back up in the gold mining sector. After many years of underinvestment, the sector is now starved of available supply right as demand is rising. It takes a long time for the "major" mining companies to bring new mines into production, so it's much faster for them to simply purchase smaller players with proven projects already underway. And even non-mining companies are getting into the action, as evidenced by the recent surprise purchase of Hycroft Mining by meme stock darling AMC Theaters.
