In his first State of the State address since taking office in January, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein outlined an ambitious agenda Wednesday night, focusing heavily on Hurricane Helene recovery, education funding and economic development while calling for bipartisan cooperation.
Speaking before a joint session of the Republican-controlled General Assembly, Stein, a Democrat, described Hurricane Helene as "by far the costliest storm to ever hit our state" with $60 billion in overall damages.
"The storm flooded western North Carolina, stealing too many lives from us and devastating too many communities," Stein said. "But in the days, weeks and months that followed, I have seen, we have all seen that the state of our state is strong, North Carolina is strong."
