Charlotte is paying tribute on Thursday to the life and legacy of renowned civil rights attorney James E. Ferguson II, who died on July 21 at the age of 82. Known as a pioneering lawyer, mentor, and social justice advocate, Ferguson’s decades-long fight for equality left a profound impact on North Carolina and beyond.

A Celebration of Life service is being held at The Park Church on Beatties Ford Road, with visitation beginning at 11 a.m. and the formal service starting at 12 p.m. A community reception, titled “Closing Arguments: Honoring His Legacy – Remembering Our Friend,” is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Club Nile in north Charlotte.
