West Virginia National Guard Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, tragically killed in a shooting near the White House last November, was posthumously awarded the states Distingished Service Medal. Beckstrom, along with Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, was on patrol when a suspect opened fire, resulting in Beckstroms death and Wolfes injury. Fellow guardsmen returned fire, apprehending the suspect. Beckstroms parents received the medal from Governor Patrick Morrisey, who praised her service. Wolfe, who recovered, received the Purple Heart at the State of the Union. The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, faces murder and assault charges.
