Prince William County Public Schools in Virginia is pioneering a new safety feature on school buses: airbags for drivers. These propane-powered buses, provided by Blue Bird Corporation, are the first in the nation to have this voluntary safety addition. The district aims to switch fifty percent of its fleet to alternative fuels, with ten propane buses already on the roads and fifty-two more arriving soon. The switch to propane not only cuts emissions but also boosts safety, as these buses are already the safest way for kids to travel. The upgrade to airbags for drivers adds peace of mind, as crashes often hit lower on the bus frame. The switch to propane also makes financial sense, with electric buses running about four hundred thousand dollars each, compared to one hundred sixty thousand for propane. By the end of the school year, all new propane buses will be running, with eighty-three more planned for next year. The growth means hiring extra drivers, but the district has plenty ready to go.
