Ep 116116: An In-Between-Quel
Enterprise References in Star Trek: Beyond. In 2016, for the fiftieth anniversary of Star Trek, fans were excited to hear that a new movie would be gracing the silver screen. Continuing the Kelvin Timeline adventures of Captain Kirk and his crew, the writers made an effort to tie this film into Star Trek continuity with numerous references to events and characters established in the previous fifty years of the franchise. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by former host Jeffrey Harlan, and Justin Oser to discuss Star Trek: Beyond, and the ways in which it ties to the history of Star Trek: Enterprise. We talk about our initial impressions of the film, The U.S.S. Franklin, the M.A.C.O.s, and Balthazar Edison. Chapters Intro (00:00:00) Welcome, Boomers! Ep 114114: A Magnificent Comparison
Marauders and The Magnificent Seven. Television shows have frequently taken inspiration from popular movies when it comes to story telling. Some influence is subtle, and some is obvious. In a follow up to Warp Five 101, where John Tenuto and Brandon-Shea Mutala compared "Dawn" to the film Enemy Mine, we take a look at another second season episode that has inspiration from a popular film. In this episode of Warp Five, host Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Brandon Cowles and Michael Schindler in a discussion that compares the second season episode of Enterprise to the films Seven Samuari and The Magnificent Seven. We also discuss the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode "The Magnificent Ferengi" as well as Steven Soderbergh's film The Good German, which has nothing to do with the conversation. In this episode of Warp Five, Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Mike Sussman to discuss his writing career on Enterprise. We also discuss working with Michael Piller on Voyager, who the dead guy was in "Future Tense," and how Mike's favorite episode from Enterprise originally began as a Janeway and Chakotay story. Each show has a very different leader, and each captain has their own command style, expertise, and hobbies. Ep 110110: Chocolate Chip Cookies
"Carbon Creek" Commentary with Dayton Ward. *there are some intermittent audio issues with B-Shea's file that start at 48:11 and last for about 6 minutes. Many episodes of each of the Star Trek series have spawned sequels and story continuations in the form of books and comics. While some are direct sequels to the episodes, some simply take characters or ideas and extrapolate further adventures for our crews. One of the most prolific Star Trek authors currently at work is Dayton Ward, having written or co-written more than 35 books and short stories in the Star Trek universe. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by Dayton Ward to provide an audio commentary for the Enterprise second season episode "Carbon Creek," which introduced us to the character of Mestral, who would become important in three of Ward's novels. Ep 107107: Alt-Vulcan Movement
Changes to Alien Designs in Trek. Star Trek has always had cool alien races, both friends and foes to the Federation. After five different live-action series, and fifty years of technological advancement, the designs and looks of these aliens have changed. While some have changed more than others, none of them look exactly the same as they did when they first appeared. In this episode of Warp Five Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Patrick Devlin to discuss how the designs and representations of alien races in Star Trek have changed over the last fifty years, and what we predict it will mean for Star Trek: Discovery. Ep 105105: Teach Them Some Math
Eight Episode Enterprise/TOS Marathon. Star Trek fans love to watch their favorite episodes in a format that has affectionately been dubbed "binge watching" since they have been able to watch the show on home video. However, most marathons tend to stick to one series at a time. What would happen if fans started to mix and match the episodes from different series in a long stretch of one sitting? In this episode of Warp Five, Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Patrick Devlin to plan out an eight episode marathon of Star Trek episodes, alternating between the original series and Star Trek: Enterprise. Ep 103103: That's Really Cute
Toys with Tenuto. Science Fiction and toys have gone hand in hand since studios realized that they could make money off of their intellectual properties, and both Star Trek and Star Wars were no exception to the flood of creative ideas to grace the toy shelves. Beginning with toys that were re-labelled as "Astro" toys that weren't originally created for Star Trek, all the way through the current line of Eaglemoss star ships, we take a nostalgic, fun filled trip back to days of garage sales and dollar discount bins filled with wonderful toys. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Brandon-Shea Mutala are joined by sociology professor and Star Trek expert John Tenuto to discuss the fascinating history of Star Trek toys. We also discuss toy lines that were abandoned, toys that continue to get reissued, and we even offer some advice for the aspiring collector of goodies from the final frontier. Ep 102102: All 173 Rules of Acquisition
"Acquisition" and the Ferengi in Enterprise. When developing a premise for a new Star Trek series, Rick Berman and Brannon Braga decided that the successor to Star Trek: Voyager would have its sights set on the past. As a prequel to Star Trek, Enterprise was designed to explain how we got from present day, through World War III, and into the 23rd century. Many aliens that we would see in the show originated with the Star Trek that was created in the sixties. However, the creators did bring in a few other races that we would not see until the era of The Next Generation. In this episode of Warp Five, Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by Amy Nelson, co-host of Earl Grey, to discuss the Ferengi, and their appearance in the 22nd century. We talk about seeds laid during "Dear Doctor" for their appearance in "Acquisition," how their portrayal in the 22nd century compares to their portrayal in the 24th century, oo-mox, the actors, and our overall opinions on the episode. Ep 101101: Don't Mess With the Zho'Kaan
Comparing "Dawn" and Enemy Mine with John Tenuto. Throughout the 1980s, the science fiction genre dominated mainstream cinema; as a result, many new types of plots and characters appeared on the silver screen that would influence filmmakers and television creators for years to come. One example of these ground-breaking and hugely influential sci-fi films is Wolfgang Peterson's 1985 classic, Enemy Mine. In this episode of Warp Five, Brandon-Shea Mutala is joined by sociology professor and Trek expert John Tenuto to compare and contrast the season two episode of Enterprise called "Dawn" with its cinematic counterpart Enemy Mine. We come up with some other surprising ways that this film influenced Star Trek and ways in which the film may have been influenced by Star Trek itself! We also compare these to the 1968 World War II film Hell in the Pacific. Lastly, John gets some surprising new things to think about after we read feedback from two listeners. Ep 9999: They Had Steak, They Had Salad
The Little Things. What is that little thing that makes you love Star Trek: Enterprise? That little detail that makes the series speak to you in a way that others may not. It could be something that makes it stand out compared to the other series, or it could be a nice homage to one of them. It could be subtle, or it could be very obvious. What are those little things that makes you want to join the crew of the NX-01 again and again? Ep 9797: Giving Birth on National Television
If you had a chance to speak to a stealthy, Section 31 agent, what questions would you ask? What would you say if he informed you that he'd also worked undercover in all Star Trek series beginning with _The Next Generation_? Would you be surprised if he also told you he was an author of middle grade and young adult novels? In this episode of _Warp Five_, host Floyd Dorsey is joined by _Melodic Treks_ host, Brandon-Shea Mutala, to have a chat with Eric Pierpoint. Find out what it was like to try to be a secret agent wearing squeaky pants, how he was able to give birth on national television, starring in _Alien Nation_, and how close he was to commanding _Deep Space Nine_ and the _U.S.S. In this episode of Warp Five, host Floyd Dorsey is joined by Melodic Treks host Brandon-Shea Mutala and Meta Treks co-host Mike Morrison to answer these questions, and more, as they analyze the topics and situations that stand out in the last half of season two. Ep 9393: Is He Really a Terran?
Debriefing Jeffrey. Travis Mayweather was born aboard the ECS Horizon on the Draylax–Vega Colony run, and he grew up on the ship. Would he be considered an Earther? This is just one of the questions we ask as in this episode oF Warp Five as co-host Jeffrey Harlan bids farewell to the NX-01. In addition to Travis's origins, we also discuss how a book from Travis's childhood affected an entire civilization, debate whether "In a Mirror Darkly" is really one of the best Star Trek episodes, and whether "These Are the Voyages" is really the worst. Ep 9191: Putting Archer in a Necktie
Warp Five Writer's Room 2. What if Star Trek: Enterprise hadn't ended after four seasons? What if season four had finished on a cliffhanger instead of with "These Are the Voyages"? What if that cliffhanger had shown Captain Jonathan Archer facing the fallout from a crucial decision we thought had been forgotten? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Continuing Mission host Dennis Castello to hear his pitch for an alternate finale to season four, how that finale could have changed the course of the series, and how it would set up a very interesting beginning to season five. Ep 9090: I Love Lucy Is Definitely Canon
Enterprise Season Two, Part One. When most fans name their favorite year of Enterprise, seasons one, three, or four often tops the list. However, season two delivers excellent episodes that address continuity and topics that stretch across all of the Star Trek series. So, why is the NX-01's sophomore outing so often overlooked? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Continuing Mission host Dennis Castello to analyze the topics and situations that really stand out in the first half of season two. Ep 8989: I'm Gonna Fudge It a Little Bit
Reconciling Enterprise Inconsistencies. Why did the Borg appear on Enterprise? How could the Romulans have cloaking technology in the 22nd century? Did the NX-01 seem more advanced than the 1701? These are just a few of the things that many Star Trek fans cite as continuity problems surrounding the missions of Captain Archer and his crew. Could there be simple explanations that make it all fit together? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Star Trek Horizon creator Tommy Kraft to explore in-universe explanations that might just make Star Trek's prequel series a bit more palatable. Ep 8888: Daleks and Tholians, Oh My!
Enterprise/Doctor Who Crossover. What if Star Trek and Doctor Who had a crossover TV event? What would that look like? Who would we see? What channel would carry it? Surprisingly, this was actually an idea that Russell T. Davies, former show runner of the British series Doctor Who, mentioned in a 2009 interview. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Jeff Harlan and Floyd Dorsey are joined by Daniel Proulx and Phillip Gilfus of Earl Grey to tackle the combination of Enterprise and Doctor Who. We discuss what it might look like if Archer met the Doctor, what we would like to see, and create a three-episode arc on the fly for good measure! Ep 87Warp Five 87: I Love Me Some Shran
Season One Favorites. As the popularity of Enterprise grows, ten years after the NX-01's final voyage, many fans share the sentiment that the once-unpopular prequel has one of the strongest first seasons in all of Star Trek. But which of the 25 episodes that marked the show's freshman outing are the favorites of our own crew? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Mike Morrison of Meta Treks to share their three favorite episodes plus honorable mentions. Which episodes got multiple votes? Which are the obvious choices? Which aren't? And what does Clint Howard have to do with it? Grab a glass of blue ale and find out. Ep 86Warp Five 86: Phlox Steals This One
Enterprise Season One: Two Guys Walk Into a Bar. You've probably heard a joke that starts with the line, "Two guys walk into a bar…" But when they visited Risa, Tucker and Reed actually lived this joke! The end of Enterprise's first season finally gave the crew a chance to get some shore leave, but they had to navigate more than a few bumps along the way. These unexpected detours included investigating a shipwreck, getting thrown into an internment camp, and finding themselves in the thick of the Temporal Cold War! In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Tommy Kraft to discuss not only the conclusion to Enterprise Season One, but also for a final update before his Enterprise-era movie, Star Trek Horizon, premieres. The group also discusses the themes in the final seven episodes of the first season as they applaud finally seeing an "alien" alien, explain how Phlox stole an episode, and more. Plus, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country makes a guest appearance that nearly takes over this episode of Warp Five! Ep 85Warp Five 85: To All the Girls He Loved Before (Or At Least Knew)
Enterprise Season One: To Help or Not Help. While Tucker and Reed tried their best to find out if one bottle is really enough, the latter half of Season One tested Captain Archer with some very difficult decisions. More and more often, we began to see that the human morals and ethics the NX-01 crew brought with them didn't always serve them well as they encountered strange, alien species more frequently. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Mike Morrison of Meta Treks as they discuss the themes of the latter half of Enterprise's freshman season. Listen in as they debate the life-and-death decisions of Captain Archer, try to explain how a rogue planet might have green vegetation, and promote what could be a great two-man play. Ep 84Warp Five 84: Kicking in Doors and Stepping on Toes
Enterprise Season One: Making New Friends. How do you know when you may be in over your head? In Season One, it didn't take long for the NX-01 crew to find themselves exposed to situations and troubles they had never considered. Simple acts like visiting a monastery, exploring a pre-warp society, or simply saying "Hello!" quickly showed the crew that they may not be as prepared for the unknown as they thought. In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Floyd Dorsey and Jeffrey Harlan are joined by Norman C. Lao as they cover the themes found in the second quarter of Enterprise's freshman season. Listen in as they talk about what happens when you step in the middle of a centuries-old political argument, finally find an inhabited M-class planet, try to bring some order to the frontier, and find out the guy who brings you your eggs actually knows a whole lot more about you than you thought. Ep 83Warp Five 83: Space ... The Final Frontier
Enterprise Season One: The Early Missions. Just how do you create a prequel to a universe as fleshed out as Star Trek? The challenge that faced the writers and producer's of Enterprise was not an easy one. The first season tried to lay the groundwork for Starfleet's very first outing into deep space and to place the Star Trek future must closer to us, to something that we could actually relate to. What worked? What didn't work? Was it the "prequel" that fans were expecting? In this episode of Warp Five, hosts Norman Lao and Will Nguyen are joined by Floyd Dorsey, Mike Morrison, and Jeffrey Harlan for an in-depth look at the very beginning of Enterprise, focusing on the first six episodes of Season One. Ep 81Warp Five 81: This Movie Better Open At $200 Million!
Recasting ENTERPRISE for the Big Screen! Mike Morrison, co-host of Meta Treks and Associate Producer for Warp Five, threw down the gauntlet to your intrepid Warp Five team. Inspired by To The Journey episode #103 and Meta Treks episode #3, Mike challenged your beloved Team Conference Room with continuing the amazingly fun and, at times, frustrating challenge of recasting Enterprise for a "J.J. Abrams style" major motion picture reboot. And yes, for all of you Boomers out there, trying to recast our beloved NX-01 main crew and a few secondary characters was truly enlightening. The Rules of Engagement that were previously established in To The Journey and Meta Treks required us to cast our choices very specifically. We had to find actors, not impressionists, who embodied both the physical and spiritual attributes of their television counterparts. The best example of this is how Karl Urban so brilliantly re-interpreted Dr. McCoy his 2009 and 2013 performances. So please join us in The Conference Room and maybe you will create a list of your very own that you can share with us via e-mail, voicemail or on The Babel Conference. Enjoy! HostsNorman C. Ep 80Warp Five 80: The Name is Cole...Amanda Cole
MACO Corporal Amanda Cole. In Season Three of Enterprise, the crew dynamic of the NX-01 was “enhanced" in a way that we had never seen before on Star Trek. Due to the dire circumstances that developed at the beginning of the Xindi Arc, we were introduced to an entirely new branch of service from the United Earth Government: the MACOs; a specialized military attachment with orders to safeguard the crew and protect the mission. In terms of the series, this infusion of secondary characters gave the audience an entirely new cast of faces and personalities to enjoy and explore! In this episode of Warp Five, Team Conference Room continues our research into the MACOs, with an in-depth look at Corporal Amanda Cole, played by actress Noa Tishby. Cole was seen in only a few minutes of the Season Three episode Harbinger, as Trip's new romantic interest and was the catalyst for sparking jealousy in T'Pol; a clear sign of her increasing emotional instability as the mission pressed further into the Delphic Expanse. Please join us as we discuss Amanda Cole's (albeit brief) role on Harbinger and her future potential for the series. HostsNorman C. Ep 4Warp Five S2: The Full Montgomery
bonusAnthony Montgomery Talks Travis and Star Trek. Travis Mayweather may not have been the first human born in space, but for us he will always be the space "boomer" nearest and dearest to our hearts! Chosen to be the first-watch helmsman of the NX-01, Travis was the most naturally-gifted ensign and logged more deep-space interstellar star hours than any pilot in Starfleet. From his early days on the ECS Horizon, running cargo with his family, to his years of distinguished service aboard the Enterprise, Travis was the personification of enthusiasm and optimism in a future where no "boomer" had gone before. In this episode of Warp Five, Will Nguyen is joined by none other than the brilliant, multi-talented Anthony Montgomery, the man who brought Travis Mayweather to life. In this very special interview, Anthony gives us a rare tour of his career, shares with us his memories of how he first started acting, why he auditioned for Enterprise, and his fondest memories of the show. Anthony also updates us on what's happening with his graphic novel series Miles Away, shares a few updates on other things that he's currently working on, and talks about his upcoming appearance at the 2050 Daytona Beach con in Florida. If you’d like to find out more about 2050 Daytona Beach, set for Halloween weekend (Oct 30 - Nov 1), visit http://2050.events. Ep 79Warp Five 79: Hayes Fever
A Major Pain for Lt. Malcolm Reed... In Season Three of Enterprise, the crew dynamic of the NX-01 was “enhanced" in a way that we have never seen before on Star Trek. Due to the dire circumstances that developed at the beginning of the Xindi Arc, we were introduced to an entirely new branch of service from the United Earth Government: the MACOs; a specialized military attachment with orders to safeguard the crew and protect the mission. On Warp Five Episode 11, Christopher Jones talked about the concept of the MACOs and how they were folded into the overall Star Trek mythos. In this episode of Warp Five – Will, Jeff and our associate producers Mike Morrison and Floyd Dorsey continue our research into the MACOs, with an in-depth look at Major Jeremiah Hayes, played by actor Stephen Culp. Hayes was seen in only five episodes in Season Three as the commanding officer of the MACOs for the mission into the Delphic Expanse. He left and indelible mark as one of the most memorable second-tier characters on Enterprise; akin to the importance of Kellie Waymire’s Crewman Cutler. Please join your Warp Five Crew as we delve deeper into the MACOs' files and learn a great deal more about the valiant Major Hayes! Ep 78Warp Five 78: The Decommissioning Enterprise BLUs
Enterprise Season Four a.k.a The Decommissioning Enterprise BLUs Enterprise Season Four on Blu-Ray continues the visual extravaganza from Seasons One through Three, with breathtaking 1080p high-definition picture and 5.1 sound. The special features and bonus materials that were recorded specifically for this Blu-Ray set are, most notably, the best we have seen for any of the collections. The four-part "Before Her Time: Decommissioning Enterprise" and the 90-minute "In Conversation: Writing Star Trek: Enterprise" offer fans a deeper understanding of the bittersweet beginning of the end for Star Trek on television. "Before Her Time: Decommissioning Enterprise” is however, the absolute MUST SEE special feature; not just for this collection, but for all four Blu-Ray sets. This in-depth documentary is 120 minutes of unbridled and unfiltered retrospectives, chronicling the final season of Enterprise. Join us in the Conference Room with our very special guest Larry Nemecek, as he reminisces about his experiences on-set for the final days of Enterprise and most importantly, the final moments of Star Trek on television and the end of a world-wide cultural phenomenon. Ep 77Warp Five 77: Singing the Gritty Xindi BLUs
Enterprise Season Three a.k.a The Gritty Xindi BLUs. Enterprise Season Three on Blu-Ray continues the visual extravaganza from Seasons One and Two with breathtaking 1080p high-definition picture and 5.1 sound. Packed with a wealth of brand-new special features and bonus materials, the two exclusive documentaries that were recorded specifically for this collection are once again worth the price of admission. The 3-part "In a Time of War" and "Temporal Cold War: Declassified" offer fans a deeper understanding of the volatility and uncertainty surrounding Season Three. The 3-part "In a Time of War" is the absolute MUST SEE for this Blu-Ray set. It is a 90 minute eye-opening retrospective of the overarching and darker tonal shift of Enterprise's Xindi Arc as Star Trek returns to relevancy in the post 9/11 climate. Most notably, this documentary heavily features Jolene Blalock in rare and incredibly candid interviews, where she truly opens up to the audience, discussing how getting Enterprise was huge for her, how she (a relative newcomer) was cast, and how she says she grew with show as an actor and as a person. Ep 76Warp Five 76: Singing the Sophomore BLUs
Enterprise Season Two a.k.a The Sophomore BLUs. Enterprise Season Two on Blu-Ray continues the visual extravaganza from Season One, with breathtaking 1080p high-definition picture and 5.1 sound. This set is also packed with a wealth of brand-new special features and bonus materials. The most notable additions to this set are the two exclusive documentaries that were recorded specifically for this collection: The 3-part "Uncharted Territory" which explores the unyielding challenges of Season 2, and "In Conversation - The First Crew"; the unprecedented reunion of the entire Enterprise cast for the very first time since the show was canceled in May 2005. The 3-part "Uncharted Territory" is a candid, raw, and visceral recounting of the relentless production challenges and struggles throughout the entirety of Enterprise's second season. However, the absolute MUST SEE for this Blu-Ray set is "In Conversation - The First Crew". In this feature, the entire cast reunites for the first time since the show's cancellation. This is easily the best feature in this set (and quite possibly in all of the four Blu-Ray collections) because each cast member had their opportunity to candidly and openly share their memoirs of the show, amidst some clearly unstated tension and emotions. Ep 75Warp Five 75: Singing the BLUs Part One
Enterprise Season One Blu-Ray Review. Enterprise Season One on Blu-Ray is the visual extravaganza that finally offers the fans breathtaking 1080p high-definition picture and 5.1 sound. This Blu-Ray set is also packed with a wealth of brand-new special features and bonus materials. The most notable additions to this set are the two exclusive documentaries that were recorded specially for this collection: The "In Conversation" retrospective with Brannon Braga and Rick Berman and the three-part "To Boldly Go - Launching Enterprise" documentary. These exclusives alone are worth the price of the set! The "In Conversation" retrospective with Brannon Braga and Rick Berman is a candid, raw, and visceral recounting of their collective experiences with Enterprise and Star Trek in general for the past 18 years. However, the real gem for this Blu-Ray set is the three-part "To Boldly Go - Launching Enterprise" documentary. I give this Blu-Ray set my highest recommendation solely on the merit of what I learned from "To Boldly Go", as it answered a great many questions that left fans in the dark about controversial choices that plagued the series from the start. Ep 3Warp Five Subspace Postcards 2: Do They Still Send Care Packages?
bonusHot off the Subspace Presses from Hoshi's Station! In each standard episode of Warp Five, we delve into the minutiae of Enterprise. This in turn generates a lot of feedback from you, our loyal listeners, in the form of what we now call Subspace Postcards. Every so often when they start piling up, Hoshi downloads them onto my PADD so I can find some quiet time in the Conference Room to catch up on all of the mail with Will and our guests. We hope you enjoy the topics we've chosen for our second feedback show. Thanks for your support and for being such incredible, engaging and loyal fans of Warp Five. Recently I put out a feeler to the fans of The Babel Conference, Trek.fm's dedicated Facebook listener's page, and we have received an overwhelming list of incredibly diverse topics: from civilians serving on board the NX-01, to boldly going through the Great Language Barrier, receiving literal and digital mail from home to the edge of the galaxy, and speculating on The Wrath of Damar. Ep 74Warp Five 74: Re-Deconstructing Degra
For better or worse, Degra was first and foremost a Patriot. In continuing Degra’s character exploration from Warp Five Episode 42, it is apparent that his character arc has even more complexity still left to explore. The Season 3 Xindi arc from September 2003 to May 2004 emulated the U.S. national zeitgeist, post-911, with issues of torture, weapons of mass destruction, and moral compromise at the heart. But without Degra's redemption and the overall resolution of the conflict which hinged upon reconciliation, the story would have been significantly darker and fundamentally not in the best traditions of Star Trek. Conceptually, the initial inspiration for the character of Degra was J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the fathers of the atomic bomb. Brannon Braga explained in Star Trek Magazine #117, p. 62, "We knew we wanted to create an Oppenheimer-like character who was the mastermind behind building the bomb, who was very committed to his species but wracked with guilt, just like Oppenheimer." So please join us for a deeply philosophical discussion about Degra and how he faced his own morality which ultimately led to his redemption. Ep 73Warp Five 73: The Fleet That Was Few and Far Between
It all began with a just handful of ships. Enterprise had the unique opportunity, as the prequel series, to introduce many of the origins of basic Star Trek canon; how M-Class was derived from the Vulcan word Minshara (with regard to classifying planets suitable for humanoid life), the first use of photon(ic) torpedoes, at times hinting of creating the Prime Directive, and of course the first Starship named Enterprise. And possibly most important, Enterprise sheds light on the proud, yet trepidatious birth of the first Human fleet that comprised all of the United Earth Space Probe Agency's (UESPA) scientific exploration and planetary defense vessels. For those of you who have watched or are currently watching Enterprise, you may not realize that in certain episodes, you truly see the limited reach and scope of Starfleet's ships of the line - in the mid 22nd century, they were likely a little less than a dozen ships in total. So, in this episode, we'll be exploring the origins of the first ships of Earth's Starfleet and the United Earth Space Probe Agency; how and why they were necessary and their service status while Archer and the crew of the NX-01 were pushing Warp Five into deep space. Ep 72Warp Five 72: Back to the Future Guy!
What if Future Guy was a Romulan agent? The Temporal Cold War was a promising, yet inconsistent storytelling device throughout the four seasons of Enterprise. Despite its many narrative challenges, the Temporal Cold War did provide the series with a few interesting world-building elements, in particular - the agents of the Temporal Accords; pawns of a greater and more far reaching endgame. So we have circled back to the Future Guy, trying to pierce his veil of mystery and that of the faction or agency for which he served. (cough) Tal'Shiar (cough) During 2009's Star Trek VegasCon, former Enterprise show runners Manny Coto and Brannon Braga stated that Future Guy was trending towards being a Romulan agent because this would have created an opportunity to tie him into the famed Romulan War, instigating certain events in Archer's time. Years later, Braga tweeted in 2012, that Future Guy was supposed to be Archer all along - trying to right his own wrongs when he was Captain of the NX-01! Join us in the Conference Room as we delve deeper into what could have been the catalyst of the Romulan War! Hosts Norman C. You are the most important driving force for the network and via the Patreon program, you can have even more involvement by becoming a patron through various levels of sponsorship. And later in the show, we celebrate and remember the end of an era. Ten years ago on May 13, 2005, the final episode of Enterprise - These Are the Voyages - was aired, which ended the series after 4 years and brought about the end of Star Trek on network television. Will, Jeff and I reflect on what this meant to each of us then, and what it still means to us today 10 years later. Ep 71Warp Five 71: The Archer-Rans
The Captains on the series Enterprise not named Jonathan Archer. On Warp Five, we often talk about the important role that Jonathan Archer had as Captain of the NX-01. Since he was the first Starfleet Captain for the first Warp Five capable ship, he didn't have the luxury of Captain's Logs or the precedents laid by the commanders before him. While it's true that Archer often had to rely on his own training and instincts, it is also true that he wasn't completely without contemporaries. Even though he was Captain of the Enterprise, he still had colleagues and friends in command of other ships and areas within Starfleet. In this episode, we're going to take a closer look at the other Captains seen on the series Enterprise...not named Jonathan Archer; more specifically A.G. Robinson and Erika Hernandez (and even Captain Gardner to a smaller degree). What can their experiences tell us about Starfleet in the 22nd century? Would Captain Hernandez's role have been expanded if the series had continued beyond Season 4? Or...how would circumstances have been different if Robinson or Hernandez were given command of the NX-01 instead of Archer? Join us for all this and more! Hosts Norman C.
