De censuur was alomtegenwoordig, de politie streng, ook al in de tsaristische tijd. En toch ontstond in de Sovjet-Unie een circuit van clandestiene uitgaven in eigen beheer, de samizdat, dat zich verspreidde naar de satellietstaten in Oost-Europa en dat tot het ineenstorten van de USSR zou blijven bestaan. Emmanuel Waegemans, die ooit zelf manuscripten de Sovjet-Unie uit smokkelde, schetst hoe de samizdat groeide en bloeide.
