Genie, generaal, dictator, tiran, maar ook minnaar,... een veelzijdig iemand als Napoleon Bonaparte is niet eenvoudig in een film te vatten. Regisseur Ridley Scott heeft het toch nog een keer geprobeerd met Joaquin Phoenix in de rol van Napoleon. Scott is natuurlijk lang niet de eerste. Zo was er de spektakelfilm van pionier Abel Gance en het nooit gerealiseerde Napoleonproject van Stanley Kubrick. Harold Polis keek naar de film van Scott en naar een aantal andere Napoleontische films.
