In the wake of the Ukrainian War, a private military company called the Wagner group has come into the spotlight. A wave of early reporting alleged that Wagner contractors were part of a hit squad tasked with taking out President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. But Wagner, which has close ties to Vladmir Putin and his allies, has been covertly spreading Russian influence by serving in proxy wars for years now. Eleven year-old Kai Shappley has had a tough time just being a kid. Her whole life, the state of Texas, where she lives, has been policing what bathrooms she can use, what name she can go by—and a myriad of other basic personal freedoms afforded to kids who are not transgender, like Kai. Last April, a new directive from Texas Governor Greg Abbott asserts that gender-affirming care provided to minors is tantamount to child abuse. Nigeria continues to grapple with a kidnapping crisis. Thousands have been abducted over the past decade, making kidnapping for ransom an underground economy. At the center of all of this is Ummi Kalthum, just 25 years old, who negotiates directly with Boko Haram, delivering ransoms for terrified families.But paying ransom is deeply controversial, since it funds the same terrorists who are kidnapping in the first place. Our host Arielle Duhaime-Ross recently learned that their cousin had been baptizing dead family members into the Mormon Church — and Arielle might be next. This controversial practice is called “baptism by proxy” or “baptism for the dead,” For people who belong to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it’s a way to get dead family members who weren’t Mormon before their death into the Kingdom of Heaven. Decades of mining has taken a toll on Jamaica’s land and people. Now, the government wants to move mining operations into the most ecologically sensitive part of the island: Cockpit Country. It’s the ancestral home of the Maroons, the descendants of indigenous people and formerly enslaved Africans who joined together to fight British colonizers. This week marks twenty years since the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. Two decades later, 9/11 is less of a day and more of an era -- an event that catalyzed countless effects, reverberating beyond the weeks, months and years that followed. For Muslim Americans that is perhaps distinctly true. After the attacks, religious, racial and ethnic profiling of these communities became so widespread that it fundamentally changed what it meant to be Muslim in America. In 1912, a Black couple named Charles and Willa Bruce bought a parcel of land in Manhattan Beach, CA and turned it into a successful seaside resort for Black Californians. Until they were driven out of town -- by white city officials who didn’t want Black neighbors. Now, a hundred years later, a new state law will allow for the return of the property to the Bruces' descendants. But the city of Manhattan Beach refuses to apologize for its actions. This past year our producer Adizah Eghan noticed an interesting trend on social media: everyone seemed to be living it up in Tulum, Mexico. A growing tension between TikTok and Black creators has come to a head in recent weeks with some creators making a stand.
