S4 Ep 25Zoo Vet Med With Dr. Ian Part 1
EHowdy, Idiot Army!!! This week, we have the opportunity to speak with the vet from the San Fransisco Zoo, Dr. Ian, and get to hear about how vet med works in the zoo world. He is incredibly likable, from starting off pandering to our exhaustive Icelandic following, talking six seven (if you're over the age of 17, you may have zero idea what this means), why zoo conservancy is so important (and saves animals), and helping explore why all of Dr. Kent's friends are A-holes. We also discuss working on site, challenges that arise, mental health of animals (not just physical), and the unfortunate fact that "69" isn't funny anymore. Listen in. There is a semi abrupt ending-we had such a fun time with Dr. Ian that we ended up inadvertantly having a two part episode. Check in next week for the back half, and if you're in the San Francisco area, check out thier zoo. It is quite amazing, and Dr. Ian's tireless dedication is a huge reason for this. S4 Ep 24A New Leash on Life
ESo, starting off, quick note. Cory the Common Idiot is no longer on the show. He will not be a part of anything going forward. Moving on, this week Associate Producer Idiot Beth and Kent the Doctor Idiot bring on some fine folks from Almost Home Humane Society in Lafayette, Indiana. Brittany Tommila, director, and Lacie Eastman, the medical team manager, talk with the Idiots about the challenges, struggles, and creativity of medicine in a shelter. They talk about how they can string a budget, improv medical procedures, and still show the love and compassion each animal needs, including taking on ones that would be put down somewhere else. They also talk fundraising, and while it's too late for this year's event, they talk about the yearly St Patrick Day's .1k. Yes, you read that right. Even Kent can do that. And there's beer at the end!! If you are interested in donating, hearing about other events, getting ready for next year's .1k, volunteering, or getting a new pet, please check them out at https://www.almosthomehumane.org/ You can also find them on Insta and Tiktok at @almosthomehumane Facebook at Almost Home Humane Society (Lafayette) If you've made it this far...do you realize that April 1 is tomorrow? Just unfortunately, wasn't on a Tuesday... Cory will return, much like an MCU hero, next week.
S4 Ep 23Influencing the Vet World with Dr. Emily King
EWe don't wanna brag, but The Idiots got to have a sit down with Dr. Emily King, TikTok Influencer and veterinarian extraordinaire, and it was a great time. They discuss pets, faith, family and vet care, as well as being overshadowed by Johnny (this will make sense, trust me), why all vet clinics should have a social media team ("your client should know you before they know you"), and the responsibility an influencer carries when people listen to their words. Dr King is great about showing a world via social media that is digestable and interesting for both client and vet pro sides. Don't just take our word for it, check her out below. She will amaze you! Oh, also, Kent and Emily discover they share a common employer in a "small world" moment. https://beacons.ai/dr.emilyking https://www.all-starvet.com/
S4 Ep 22Goodfluffas; Second Half of Our Conversation with Bill Rush, or Apocalypse Cow, Part Deux
ESee the previous week for all the apropros show notes. This is the second half of the episode we started last week, and we dive into "Birds", "Lake Placid", "Anaconda", and "Jaws". Animals, movies, and buzzed conversation. What more could you ask for? How about making fun of chiropractors, Kent "getting better" about arguing with stupid people online (he hasn't), and a discussion of why starting a gun fight at a dog park is in bad taste.
S4 Ep 21Dr Strangekent (Or How Animals Learned to Stop Scurrying and Love the Bomb) with William R. A. Rush
EAre you ready for a Tuesday matinee with the Idiots, plus their buddy Bill (Aka 152 award winning director, writer, film producer, lawyer, animal enthusiast, possible serial killer, kung fu fighter, and lover of the ladies William R. A. Rush...who strangely enough, wasn't in a hurry to be done with the Idiots, hence a two part episode) talk animals in film. The trio discuss film techniques, why working with animals is a problem (dogs tend to be too happy), and then venture into 3 classic films that involve real animals and how some of their most iconic scenes were shot. Interspattered with "Cujo", "Ghost in the Darkness", and "The Edge", they touch on other topics like why you shouldn't watch the documentary "Zoo" for family movie night, the cruel world of hyenas, penguins, ducks, cats, and lions, and why rhino hunting is actually a conservation effort worth backing, and you can still make fun of billionaire's pee pees. Also, they end on a cliffhanger, so you'll want to tune in next week for the exciting conclusion of "Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots". Will the friendships they made along the way be the real treasure? Will Kent kill Cory? Will Cory kill Kent? Will Bill just watch with popcorn clutched as they duke it out? See you next week! S4 Ep 20Rosie the Shark
EImagine with me for a moment. You go into an abandoned amusement center, urban adventuring, and you see a tank full of greenish fluid. Your flashlight reflects off the glass as the sun sets through broken windows on the other side of the room, and that's when you see it-the silhouette of a giant shark, suspended in time, waiting for her adoring public to return. Rosie is seen, and she's both terrifying and vulnerable. This was a moment that was the catalyst for Rosie's return. Rescued by geologist extraordinaire, palientologist, world traveler, owner of Crystal World, board and/or consult for multiple museums, and all around amazing and down to earth dude (basically everything any kid wanted to be when they grew up) Tom Kapitany, she was given a new lease on life. She is slowly being preserved for future onlookers, and she is a mirror to the human spirit. Please, listen to her story. Also, side note, we are still planning to release a bunch of videos eventually, and it will make this episode even better. Tom gave us a tour of Crystal World, and as much as we try to describe, it's much better seen than heard. However, the conversation was just too good to get rid of, so apologies for some of the parts that need to be seen. Just take our word for it, the venture to Victoria Australia. If Rosie's story has touched you, please consider donating to the GoFundMe, or at least, sharing it on your socials. https://www.gofundme.com/f/rosie-the-shark https://www.crystalworld.com.au/rosie-the-shark/
S4 Ep 19Social Cognition and Inequity Aversion and Other Words Cory Doesn't Understand with Dr Jim McGetrick
EGood morrow, Idiot Army. This week we have another excellent guest, a friend of recent guest Dr Raffaela Lesch, and super genious from The University of Vienna (yes, Cory and Kent were disappointed to find out this is not where tiny hot dogs come from) Dr Jim McGetrick comes on to discuss social cognition and inequity aversion with dogs, and other animals. They discuss reactions in animals seeing other companions who get more, or less, of treats and how they react, how running tests is as much making sure your own bias is removed as making sure the dogs in the tests aren't smarter than you, and coop with humans, among other topics. Also, it wouldn't be a VM4IBI episode if we didn't have any issues- No, the Idiot Associate Producer Beth did not quit half way through, but her microphone did. You'll notice her sudden silence...she was with us in spirit...or something. Anyway, check out Jim's links, he has some incredible work with multiple focuses and animals. University of Vienna profile page: https://becogbio.univie.ac.at/people/scientific-staff/jim-mcgetrick/ Researchgate profile page: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Jim-Mcgetrick Google scholar page: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=wQsURuAAAAAJ&hl=en
S4 Ep 18Prion, Pry Off
EHappy Tuesday, and welcome back. All three Idiots are present to talk about Prions (pronounced Pry-Ons, unless you don't like the taste of Freedom, then it's Pree-Ons) and how folded proteins can affect the brain. Other notable moments is Cory doing a (sounds like a capella but the mic did not pick up his guitar over his voice...you'd think the Idiot Musician would know how mics work, but apparently not) parody of "Mad World" and The Doctor Idiot having the bejeezus scared out of him by his mom.
S4 Ep 17Horsin' Around With Dr. Lord (not THAT Lord, though)
EAre you ready for some really cringe jokes that make Dr. Kent want to play in traffic, followed by some really great and inciteful discussions about horse medicine? Then we've got an episode for you. This week, The Idiots talk with Dr. Natalie Lord (who does not turn water into wine, much to our disappointment) about the fun, the frustration, the pride, and the problems with being a horse vet. Most is done ambulatory, so travelling on site, and sometimes the trips can take up nearly the entire day. However, it is rewarding, always.
S4 Ep 16This Episode Is Very Boarding
EWelcome welcome! This has been a crazy season. The first half was as long as our longest season. We took a break, and now we are back again. Man, it always feels good to take some time off. While it may not seem like it, the three Idiots really put in a lot of effort, and it takes a lot of effort to sound this relaxed, honestly. We're proud of what we do, but sometimes the batteries need to recharge. Anyway, that aside, we are joined by Kristi, franchisee/owner of Hounds Town Fayetteville. We talk about the care that goes into making sure your pooch has the best time at doggy daycare and boarding, the behind the scenes so people can get a grasp just how hard and time consuming this job can be, the joys of the grind, and somehow, we all stay on topic because Kristi is as much a music and record nerd as Cory. If you are in the Fayetteville area, Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots highly recommends Hounds Town Fayetteville (I'm sure all the locations are top tier, they have a great vetting and training process, but Kristi is a friend and we trust her 100%, since she is a peak human). Check them out on Facebook or Instagram@houndstownfayetteville, or call them at 910-853-0234.
S4 Ep 15The Reign of Reindeer
Parents, bring the kids around for this one! They'll be excited to hear it, and for a VM4IBI first, there is no cursing at all! Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, whatever you believe and celebrate. For a midseason finale, The Idiots (all three, including Merry Bethmas, the Associate Producer Idiot) talk vet med on reindeer. At least, the first half is, until Cory gets a text from a guy calling himself "Santa" and asks us to talk about his 9 reindeer. Beth, who is the Christmas Reindeer expert, teaches us even more about the reindeer that help Santa deliver millions of presents around the world each Christmas Eve night! Don't want to miss this, lest you might end up on the naughty list, like Dr Kent and Cory! Also, apologies for the sound quality for Kent's parts-he left his microphone at home, and is somehow convinced his AirPods work just as well. We will be taking a short break for holiday festivities, but will be back early 2026. This season has been groundbreaking for us in so many way, including the fact that we have already done more episodes that we typically do in a full season, have had some collossal guests, and have expanded the brand to 3 total Idiots. Also, you may hear that we have added in some advertisements. We have partnered with Libsyn and with Audacy for advertisements. We don't necessariy endorse anything that has been put with our episodes for ads, but frankly, we simply sold out. That said, we have purposely only added ads to the front and back of every episode, at least for now, as we have always aimed for our show to feel like a sit down chat, not an overly produced slick show. We appreciate all of your listeningship, and hope that you come along for the next chapter of the show. We do this because you do what you do. Thank you so much, and we'll talk with you next year.
S4 Ep 14Private and Public Clinic with Dr. Xanda
EHave you ever wondered what the difference is between a private and private vet clinic is? Listen in this week with our friend Dr. Xanda Fuhrken, who has been in both worlds, as we compare and contrast the worlds. We also talk about the large conglomerates that masquerade as a small town vet clinic and how to find out if they are, should you wish. We also somehow give a shout out to Shelby, Xanda's sister, so check her out on TikTok @shelbolognapepperonipizza. Worth it.
S4 Ep 13Pet Trash Pandas
EHowdy, listenerlings!! This week's episode is a fun one. Beth, The Associate Producer Idiot joins our discussion with our new friend Raffaela Lesch, PhD, who was the lead researcher in studying trends showing that raccoons are following a similar path that wolves did en route to becoming dogs. The good news, this means that trash pandas may become domesticated, possibly self-domesticated, to be pets. Ya know, little bandit masked housemates! The bad news, unless you plan to live for another 10k+ years, you likely will never own one. Does anyone have a number for a cryogenic deep freeze person? Dogtor Kent may be interested. The discussion is lively, fun, relaxed, and just an all around good time. If you want to read the nitty gritty details, check out Raffaela's research at https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12983-025-00583-1 https://www.raffaelalesch.com/
S4 Ep 12Not One More Vet
EToday is Giving Tuesday, and what a fortuitous timing for this episode to drop (trust me, Cory did not plan it this way, it's just stupid luck). The Idiots sit down with Gigi Tsontos and Jenny Glasgow, executive director and president of the board, respectively, of Not One More Vet, or NOMV. It's hard exactly to pin down what NOMV is, but as a very basic description, they are an incredibly important group, coalition, movement that gives veterinary professionals (from the lead doctors and owners of clinics to techs to cleaning crews) resources, education, and a collective to focus on mental health. NOMV is saving lives, enriching lives, and making the veterinary world a better place. Happier vets mean happier pets. This episode does have to talk about the dark side, the ones lost, and this helps bring more understanding and appreciation to the light. We Idiots are incredibly humbled to have been able to spend an hour talking with Gigi and Jenny about an organization they are clearly so (deservedly) proud of that the world absolutely needs. As this is Giving Tuesday, as previously mentioned, please find it in your heart, if you can, to donate to https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=5BQGXT8YNKUH4. A little bit goes a long way, and they explain where some of the funds go in the episode. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots wholeheartedly endorses NOMV and cannot say enough good about them. https://nomv.org/ www.chubbydognation.com for weightloss solutions for your pet, if they're a little on the chubby side.
S4 Ep 11Wobbles the Wonder Cat
ESo, against his wishes, Cory the Common Idiot has a cat. Her name is referred to as Silver or Silvie in the episode, but she is actually named Wobbles the Wonder Cat, because it annoys Amber, the Brain Witch Idiot. Anyway, Wobbles is extra special because she has a condition called cerebellar hypoplasia. This basically makes basic movements slightly...off. A wobbly kitty, if you will. The Idiots discuss her condition, almost give away the story on how she ended up in the Common Idiot's household (a story for a later time), and the condition of cerebellar hypoplasia, what it does, why it affects movements, and Kent's stupid fingers.
S4 Ep 10Beth Was An American Girl Vet Pro (Who Left The Wildflowers to Run Down A Dream In Africa and Germany)
EHappy Tuesday, and we have a show for you! The Idiots have a HUGE announcement, then discuss veterinary medicine differences around the globe (or across the board, if you're a flat earther), mainly focusing on rural Africa and Germany. They discuss making something out of nothing, regulations, and how the US could be better, and what a hyena kiss is. Also, lots of escaped thoughts, but that's just par the course for the Idiots.
S4 Ep 9VPAs
EThis week, The Idiots discuss VPAs, or...ya know what, I am not going to tell you what a VPA is because it takes away the mystery. This is what they call in the show biz "a teaser". Are you interested? I hope so! Anyway, Dr. Kent compares VPAs to something similar in human medicine, and they discuss potential goods and bads of VPAs. Just listen. I'm really sleepy and have nothing in the creative tank. I mean, I named the episode "VPAs". Just lower your standards this once, please. Thanks!
S4 Ep 8An Afternoon With Our New Pal Jae
EHey everyone! Meet Jae. They are an awesome listener/fan who reached out, has some things to say about being in the vet world as a rookie, sometimes scared, sometimes not knowing what to expect, but feeling their way through and getting better every day. Listen up, because they also talk about what it takes to be a great client and what to avoid to not be a boneheaded one! Plus, talks of bottle feeding kittens. So, pull up a seat at the proverbial table, grab a beer (except Jae, Jae will be drinking a soda or juice or something because they're a youngin'), and learn to not just respect your elders, but your younger generation, because they have something worth listening to. Huge thank you, also, to Jae for this episode. We recorded it 3 times. The first two times, the files were lost (see previous episode in Spooky Season about why Cory has to use his wife's computer for the time being), this time, it recorded, but for some reason, our program ONLY worked with cell phones. Fate was not kind to us this time around. I will say, I am incredibly impressed with the sound quality I got from her AirPod Pros, and if Apple wants to sponsor us in the form of, say, a couple new MacBooks, some new AirPod Pros (especially for Kent), and a suitcase full of money (not milk), we would kindly accept!
S4 Ep 7Thar Be Vampars In Them There Diseases
ESpooky Season is finally ending, and the Idiots end it with a fizzle. Piggybacking off of last week's Vampire and Tuberculosis episode, the discussion dives into more vampire legends, including the tie into wolves and bats, disease creating a weakness to sunlight, water and rabies, and how these and other misunderstandings with disease and how it spread directly impacted the lore of the classic vampires we know today. There literally was even a Great Vampire Pandemic. Fun times.
S4 Ep 6Tuberculosis Sucks
EKeeping the Spooky Season eps rolling, Idiots Cory and Doctor Kent discuss Tuberculosis and the foundation of the modern vampire that has come from it. That's basically it. They talk about how not sexy tuberculosis is, both in what it does to the body (not just the lungs) and the bacterium. Stay vaccinated, stay safe, and don't handle dead bodies that died of an unknown disease without PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Also, Ellis makes another guest appearance.
S4 Ep 5Cryptid Med For Idiots Part 2: The Cryptiding
ESpooky season is halfway over, and the Idiots aren't going to let it go without a bite...of spooky! The boys discuss a few new cryptids, and talk about why they will not touch a skinwalker-out of respect.
S4 Ep 4Cryptid Med For Idiots By Idiots
ESpooky Season continues, and this week, the Idiots discuss cryptid veterinary medicine on a couple of Michigan's cryptids, an NHL team's namesake, and the most famous goat sucker in the world (there's a "your mother" joke in there somewhere). Listen along, and try not to be too terrified! We mention that there is a video version of this episode here, and there will be in the future. We just have to figure out the best way to go about this. Any AV nerds out there that would be willing to putting together eps for us? A million thanks in advance!
S4 Ep 3Snook Hook, Line, and Stabber
EOctober is here, there for Spooky Season has begun! The boys dive into this in talking gibberish for an hour, loosely talking about the Snook Hook (or spay hook) inventor, James Howard Snook, who is as well known for his invention, and winning two gold medals in the Olympics, as he is for killing his mistress because it was in Ohio in the late 1920s and nothing else was really going on in that time. Stick with us for the next month as we get into the spooky.
S4 Ep 2VM4IBI Presents "Pet Myths 2: The Mythening"
EThe pet myths episode was so popular, we actually had a call to do a sequel, and much like every sequel, this one is much, much worse. The Idiots talk about the need to dominate your dog, teaching old dogs new tricks, ticks and heart worm prevention, human to animal medicine, and others.
S4 Ep 1Mentorship with Dr B
EThe Idiots are back, baby!!!! They are returning, much to many people's disappointment, and they brought in a great guest. Dr Christien Bolden, influencer, Bayou vet, and mentor savante discusses mentorships, what to look and look out for (and this can apply to any mentorship, not just in the vet world), and finally takes the Angela Basset question seriously. Side note, she has blocked us on the socials, which is slightly discourteous. Anyway, we're glad to be back, we hope you tolerate the episode, and check out Dr. B's links! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBMCTAaeNTHTkKhH_9H11jQ https://www.stan.store/morethanadogtor https://www.tiktok.com/@morethanadogtor?_r=1&_d=secCgYIASAHKAESPgo8ZNDO7pwCTIc%2F5MojQqtC1%2BjzVHO1as4wXMGXcH3is7wPotcqVE6yRtqMAHt8dUADHY4VrFpNc98YkCXcGgA%3D&_svg=3&checksum=dbb0af0189ad57509fc4361e053e606ad09b802ab85cc4ab69e3cd024275ff99&enable_clips=1&sec_uid=MS4wLjABAAAAwVURnPtVhsXl8NpFKPLp_9LRsHauSKhFD_QNmRdFWum9HrPEUse5UIoRAMBgqDV4&sec_user_id=MS4wLjABAAAAVOc-EsWxA3Dtoz-1Ctw0ZvXzFpiEuCdnrfn52NTWtQpiiifPWJmw_DtflzJ3ZpOm&share_app_id=1233&share_author_id=6957815861973599237&share_link_id=2A55D757-DFA4-412D-9AF3-3D4B87F146C7&share_scene=1&sharer_language=en&social_share_type=5&source=h5_m×tamp=1756051637&tt_from=sms&u_code=di8e2a7mi5kkcc&ug_btm=b0%2Cb5836&user_id=6955142806793995269&utm_campaign=client_share&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=sms
S3 Ep 16More More Fictional Vet Med with Dr. Dean Scott
EHowdy and so long! We hate to say it, but season 3 is about to be in the rearview mirror. Wow. 3 Seasons. It's incredibly humbling to have been able to make it this far, so let me start off by speaking for both Idiots when I say thank you, thank you, thank you for supporting us then, now, and in the future. As has become a tradition, we like to end or begin seasons with more lighthearted things, and we brought back Dr. Dean Scott for this season closer, and he bookends the season nicely. We talk all sorts of fictional creatures, some from books suggested to us by the Brain Witch Idiot, and some from Dean's books. These include dragons and griffins from the Empyrian Series (for the love of god, Rebecca Yarros, please don't sue me) and the Harry Potter series (for the love of god, JK Rowling, please learn about love) and critters from Scott's book series "The Dragon Vet" and "The Half-Life of Grief". Everything Scott writes is amazing, please, check him out, but check out our second conversation with him. Then, inbetween waiting for next season to drop and re-listening to our entire back log and listening to Cory Johnson and the Broken Nightscape's musical breadth, you can read his many books. You can find the Common Idiot's music on any streaming service. You can also hear a song written and performed in about an hour (without the studio, so the quality isn't great, but it's an homage to you!) at the end of this episode, which may or may not eventually be on all streaming services, with the rest of my music. Also, still planning on a full album out soon. Still so excited. While I'm stealing the spotlight and being selfish for a second, I do want to take a moment to be vulnerable. I have a bit of a...stomach issue. The doctors are still working on figuring out what it is exactly. Don't worry, this isn't a "I have 3 months to live" message, but it's still important to be open. The best guess is GERD, but it presents in a lot of different ways. There are some other health complications that might be along side and either exacerbating the problem, or being a menace of its own. Unsure, and unclear. The worst part, from a performer's standpoint, is I sometimes have difficulty swallowing, and I'm quite literally unable to do anything until it passes. So, if you've heard times where it sounds like I'm letting out a big sigh of disinterest, it is because I'm finally drawing my first breath in 30 seconds, or have moments where I pause for a long time between words, same thing. Adding to this is I have a tic in my face that sort of comes and goes, and I think sometimes these two problems love to tag team me into submission. It honestly has affected my confidence, but that's a whole different thing. The problem manifests itself, too, with a lot of burping, or even just throat sound from my esophogus doing...idk, bullshit things. I normally edit it all out, but it's often extremely time consuming. I did not do that in this one, and it can be heard. I apologize if it sickens you. I'm not a fan of the sound, hopefully everything else distracts nicely. There have been a few other episodes where it was there and I either missed them in editing, or ran out of time and had to leave them. I shied away, I'm not anymore. Also, I'm seeking treatment, trying to fix it, and hopefully it will never be a problem in the future. A note about Kent. I want to take a second to just thank my best friend on this whole fucking planet for being with me in this. He could have picked a lot more qualified people to run this with, he chose me. He does tend to make poor life choices. Anyway, I love you, brother. S3 Ep 15Doggo Snozzos
EWelcome back to another riveting episode where the boys inevitably get distracted and go on tangents. However, along the way, the Idiots talk noses. You know, snoots, boopers, snozzes, sniffers, cold wet presses...the list goes on. Learn about some of the super amazing functions of the nose, why they're better with theirs than you'll ever be with yours, and imagine being able to see the world by scent. Also, there were supposed to be some links for references, but you'll have to google that yourself because Cory lost the list and doesn't feel like hearing Kent complain. Again. So, the research is from blubity bloo. Trust me, that will make sense in the context of the episode. Also, if you listen closely, you can hear the cameo of multiple birds on the window bird feeder adding their two cents to the conversation. No one asked, though. Very pushy, insistant, really.
S3 Ep 12Mind Altering Powers of Toxoplasmosis
ECue the freaky deaky theremin music, because this week the Idiots talk toxoplasmosis, an infection that lives in cat poo (and unwashed veggies and undercooked meat) that affects brains. All mammals can be affected, but rats and mice are affected the most. However, humans can also be greatly affected. Listen this week to learn more about this disease, and to find out you may actually already have it.... Anyway, sources https://www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/toxoplasmosis-cats https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/toxoplasmosis/resources/printresources/catowners_2017.pdf https://www.merckvetmanual.com/cat-owners/disorders-affecting-multiple-body-systems-of-cats/toxoplasmosis-in-cats
S3 Ep 13Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 3, Frenchie Revolution
EIn an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction. In what many are calling the greatest trilogy of all time, better than the Lort of Da Rings, Star Warz, Goodfadder, and Alans, the Idiots bring their journey to an end. In this, they discuss French Bulldogs, who were thiiiiiiissssss close to being extinct, and how some lady I'm too lazy to go back and listen or look up saved them. She's a hero, though. They talk again about selective breeding, and how even foxes have been bred to be closer to dogs, and slowly develop floppy ears in place of their pointy ears. Also, seriously, go look up rose eared Frenchies. Seriously, go. You're welcome.
S3 Ep 12Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 2
EIn an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction. Welcome to part 2. This week the Idiots talk about breeds going extinct, but also dabble in how some could be saved or became other breeds. They discuss what makes a breed a breed, and some other stuff. Idk. I was too busy looking things up for them.
S3 Ep 11Wolves to Dogs to Potatoes Part 1
EIn an Idiots first, the guys take on a three part episode, covering a very breviated history of wolves becoming dogs, then how different breeds came about, going into breeds that have gone extinct over the years or were rolled into other breeds, and then concluding with a discussion about bringing one breed, the French Bulldog, away from the brink of extinction. Part 1 is the discussion of wolves, specifically a breed of wolf that no longer is on this planet, most likely because it assimilated quietly into modern dogs. They talk of how dogs spread throughout the world, the cause of them joining human ranks, why a symbiotic relationship was so important it came to what we have today, and discuss other things, like ring evolution (editors note, Cory talks about birds on Darwin Island and erroneously refers to them as wrens, but they were actually finches) and selective breeding for working needs.
S3 Ep 10Dawwwwww, Look At the Baby Vet with Dr. Maddy
EThe Idiots have talked about what it's like when you're an established vet, what it's like going through vet school, and what it's like in internships, residencies, and clinicals, but that murky inbetween has not been breached. That's where Dr. Maddy Golichowski (or as Kent says "Gahlowzzskckksheeee") comes in. Dr. Maddy is well into her second year as a practicing vet, which allows her the hindsight of a first year without the distance in time obscuring her view. We talk pros, cons, and difficulties with being green in the field. Listen up, this rookie is going to do great things, and The Idiots were happy to be along for the ride.
S3 Ep 9Idiots Talk Dog Brain On Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys
EWe did a crossover thing! The lovely Dr. Amy Pike and Dr Amy Learn were gracious enough to share a show with us. Vet Med For Idiots By Idiots collides with Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys, and the result is wonderful. Lots of laughs, lots of information, much of it to do with simplifying dog behavior, understanding how to interpret their mannerisms and actions, and why some things get confused due to outdated thoughts. Be safe with your pets, and your pets will be safe with you. Also, check out their show. Our episode has been on for a couple weeks, and now is available on our sites. Learn and Pike are both wonderful, intelligent, and entertaining doctors and are probably better than us in every way, except we grow better beards and are way bigger in Iceland. Behavior Buzzzzzz with 2 Amys, is available on Apple at https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/behavior-buzzzzzz-with-2-amys/id1706761841 and Spotify at https://open.spotify.com/show/4ZMc3J3TOhg7FmQm3N1vTz?si=486-lB_zSV-8s62F26HfGw
S3 Ep 8Oncology With Dr. Fulkerson
EIf there is something that we can all agree on wholeheartedly, it's "f*#$ cancer", right? This week, The Idiots bring on The Oncology Idiot, Dr. Christopher Fulkerson, who is at the forefront of cancer research for animals. Join us as we break down why there isn't a simple cure for cancer, the ways we are advancing in medicine, how the research process goes, and why animal research is great for humans, as breakthroughs with the former can jump to the latter. Also, Dr. Kent ALMOST laughs at Cory's joke, so that's exciting.
S3 Ep 7White Coat Syndrome
EThis week, The Idiots discuss White Coat Syndrome, which is a phenomenon where nerves override the body in anticipation of seeing a doctor. Can be the building, the area, the lobby, the doctor-something just gets ahold of the animals. This can happen to humans, as well. We are lobbying for a new law where pizza and tacos are given free at the doctor, to make it more enjoyable and to relate good with the clinic. We do the same with animals! Anyway, listen in to hear about WCS, how you can help your pets get through it, and the pitfalls of failing to be prepared for a visit with an anxious dog. Just remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
S3 Ep 6An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Pound of Cure Or Some Crap Kent Says
EHowdy! Do you want to pay a small amount now or a huge amount later? Unless you are a moron, I think I know the answer. That's what this episode is all about. The boys talk preventative medicine, including checks ups, vaccines, and other routine maintainence for your pet. Don't worry, they get distracted, figure out how to work Angela Bassett into the conversation, and get sidetracked talking about sharks. BTW, Cory's 5 favorite sharks all time are the thresher, great white, megalodon, goblin, and stethacanthus.
S3 Ep 5Self Care For Mental Health Strength with Amber Johnson, LLMSW
EIn a season of return guests, another makes a come back. Amber Johnson, Idiot Brain Witch extraordinaire, touches on mental health again, and steps you can do to help keep mental health in check. Be it self care, calming techniques, or just being kind to yourself in general, you matter, and vets have incredibly stressful jobs. Yours might be, too, if your career isn't in the veterinary medicine world. Maybe you're unemployed or a stay at home parent. Mental health, self care, and calming techniques aren't limited to stressful jobs. It's an episode that can speak to anyone. Give a listen and be kind to your mind. If you have more questions for Amber, reach out to either of the Idiots and they can put you in contact. If we get enough questions about mental health in general, we may compile them into another episode with Amber. S3 Ep 4Vet Tech Schoolin'
EHave you ever wanted to be the workhorse of a veterinary hospital? Do all the work for the veterinarians but get none of the credit and a fraction of the pay? Do you want to get scratched and bit by patients routinely? If this sounds amazing to you, then listen to this episode of the path it takes to become a veterinary technician. Jokes aside, they are the lifeblood of any hospital, and a vital piece to the wellbeing of all pets. Our new favorite guest, the Vet Tech Idiot Beth, discusses the way to get there. Apologies, this episode had some technical difficulties resulting in a second episode in a row with no video and some of Beth's audio was lost, but only in small random spots. The meat and potatoes of the episode is there. Anyway, we're going to blame Kent. Beth is a vet tech. Literature nerd. Music appreciator. Terrible dancer. Her credentials are Beth Laffoon, MS, RVT. She gave "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" a 3.5/5. "One of the best parts about being a vet tech in academia is getting to serve as a mentor to current, former, and prospective students. Any listeners out there who are thinking about becoming veterinary technicians- feel free to reach out with questions! I'm happy to give insight on the vet tech life or provide info about our residential and online vet tech programs that are accessible from all over the world. S3 Ep 3Women of the Vet World
EThe Idiots recognize that it is tough to be a woman in the world, and it can be even more for one in the veterinary world, so they brought back two of their favorite women doctors, Dr. Erin and Dr. Laura, for a chat about what it's like to be the fairer sex. The gang discuss sexism, both obvious and subversive, harrassment, and discuss the surprising reality that while the vet world is majority female, some of the worst attitudes towards women comes from other women. Dr. Erin's socials Tiktok and Insta @sheep.rock.vet YT and FB @sheeprockvet Dr Laura's socials and website www.fernandezveterinaryservices.com Tiktok and Insta @thedoctorsfernandez Apologies, we did not record this episode for video.
S3 Ep 2Idiot Pet Myths
EIf a dog's nose is dry, is it sick? Do cats really steal baby's breath? Listen in for these and other myths your favorite Idiots discuss. The boys talk about why these myths exist, where they came from, and if there is any validity to them. That's it. That's the show description. Also, if you really like this episode, reach out to the Idiots either at their individual socials or at [email protected] and ask about some of your own myths that you have heard about pets over the years.
S3 Ep 1An Afternoon With Dr. Dean Scott
EWelcome back! Season 3 is finally here! We should all be excited! The boys welcome their first quasi-celebrity, Dr. Dean Scott, vet extraordinaire. It addition to being a vet (in both senses, spending 5 years in the US Army Veterinary Corps), he is a multi-genre published author. He is currently working on the third of the "Dragon Vet" Series, with the second, "The Dragon Vet's Apprentice" released in October of 2023. He does not stop at fantasy, though. He has covered just about every genre and style there is. Come sit in on this wonderful afternoon with the equally wonderful Dean. There is another Dean Scott who is an author, but ours is a veterinarian, too. And awesome. And on this show. Was the other Dean Scott on here? Nope. Dr. Dean Scott is way better. S3 Ep 1000Unhinged Rambling of Unstable Idiots
EAs Season 3 is just a few days away, the Idiots present to you, completely uncut, unedited, unanythinged, many the minis (see what I did there?). This is an absolute rambling, barely coherent, but a peek behind the scenes of how the minis were thrown together. There are moments of random BSing, periods of no talking for pee breaks (both for dogs and Idiots), and other stuff this Idiot does not remember talking about. Enjoy!
S2 Ep 107Mini 19 Poisonous, Venomous, and Semantics
EThis mini discusses animals that are poisonous or venemous, and some that are both. Also, they argue over when something goes from being venemous to poisonous, or vice verse. Cory usually works his magic to annoy Kent, but he's in fine form in this one.
S2 Ep 106Mini 18 Client/Dogtor Relationships
EWe've touched on this before, but it's a good topic for all to be reminded on. The relationship with a client and vet is very important. Be open, be kind, be honest. Don't be a jerk. Don't try to guilt trip. They're doing the best they can for your pets, and you being a monster is going to only make the animal suffer. These vets are humans. Also, as they are humans, do remember there are established boundaries that must be kept. They may love your pet, your pleasant disposition, your behavior, and your business, but they may not necessarily want to be best friends with you. Nothing personal, just, it's their life and sometimes needs to be kept private.
S2 Ep 105Mini 17 Embarrassing Moments and Antibiotic Stewardship
EIn this, Kent discusses some embarrassing moments in hospital rooms and then dives into antibiotics (and other drugs) for pets. You don't know better than your vet, please don't tell them they need to give you antibiotics without consult. Thanks!
