Ep 136Is there a cure for anxiety in dogs?

Behavioral issues are the #1 reason why dogs end up in shelters. According to the ASPCA approximately 3.1 million dogs are surrendered or placed in U.S. animal shelters every year. Even more worrisome? Thousands never get adopted. But there is good news! We can quite literally save the life of a dog with proper training and care. We simply must learn to listen to our dogs, communicate effectively, correct bad behaviors, and respond appropriately. With a little love and lots of patience, almost all issues can be overcome. On this episode of B's and Queens with Caitlin Palmer, we meet Dr. Vanessa Spano, who's a veterinary behavioralist. Dr. Vanessa provides veterinary support for the ASPCA adoption animals and victims of animal cruelty and hoarding. They talk about anxiety in dogs, what it is and how to treat it. Ep 114How to live a happier life with Dr. Stacey Cordivano

This week, the third veterinary wellbeing study, which was taken during the height of the pandemic, was rolled out with some very sad news. Ninety-two percent of respondents rated increased stress as one of their top mental health challenges, 88% cited student debt and concerns about the risk of suicide as leading stressors for veterinarians. It is no surprise that the pandemic impacted many veterinarians and clinic staff, including veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, practice managers and client service representatives. Add to that, the percentage of veterinarians with serious psychological distress has increased to 9.7% in 2021 as measured by the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, compared to 6.4% in 2019. On this episode of the Desk Wench Confessions, Caitlin Palmer gets real with Dr. Stacey Cordivano, an equine veterinarian who is on a mission to bring happiness back to our profession. Ep 113Talking about making time for a family with Dr. Tara Harrison

For female veterinarians who want to specialize in zoological work, a new study on family work and income for diplomates of the American College of Zoological Medicine (ACZM) holds both good and bad news with a recent study that was published in Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.. While women in the field don’t seem to suffer from a gender pay gap, many feel that they must give up on having children in order to succeed. On this episode of Vet Candy IRL, host, Shannon Gregoire meets Dr. Tara Harrison, an associate professor of zoological medicine at North Carolina State University and lead author of the study. The study showed that when it comes to having a family, respondents’ perception of its effect on career did differ by gender. Seventy-six percent of females and 47% of males reported delaying having children because of their career. Additionally, 65% of females with children felt that having children had a negative effect on their career, compared to 16% of males with children. Finally, 85% of females without children, and 44% of males without children, thought having children would have negatively affected their careers. What can we do to change this? Start by having the conversation. Listen in to learn more! #zoo #veterinarian #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #workingmoms #womeninscience #genderissues #wildlife

Ep 130Vet Candy Magazine, March 2022

Imagine a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that's diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. International Women’s Day is March 8th and the goal is to raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. That’s something that we need a lot of in our profession. In 2017, for the first time in history, women finally became the majority in the veterinary field. Today, the AVMA says that 2/3 of all veterinarians are exclusively small animal practioners; of these, 63% are female. Women also make up 85% of all veterinary students, while veterinary technicians are about 90% female. Sadly, although women outnumber men in the veterinary field, they are still underrepresented in higher management roles. This month, we are celebrating Dr. Christine Royal, the AVP of Companion Animal and Equine Business at Merck Animal Health. Dr. Christine is a woman who has taken the reins and proved her worth in a male dominated industry, shaping the world for the women that will come after her. Ep 111Dr. Angela Hoffman is fearless, fierce, and funny

On this episode of Desk Wench Confessions, we meet the amazing Dr. Angela Hoffman. Not too many stay-at-home mothers make the transition from caring for four children 24/7 to veterinarian, but Dr. Angela Hoffmann has proven absolutely anything is possible in the world of vet medicine. At 42 years old and a single mother to four, the agonizing decision on what to do for the future of her family was one of the biggest career choices she made in her life—but she did it. Feeling positively ancient compared to her younger piers in the veterinary industry, she got into veterinary school and made the journey to becoming a vet. Years down the line, her choice has greatly benefited both her own personal well-being and her family. They now reside in a beautiful Oceanside house, and she owns her own private clinic where she sees a variety of small animals. Dr. Hoffman is an inspiration because she truly shows that no matter what your personal situation is, the potential is there to realize your dreams and become the person you want to be. When she first joined veterinary school, she was one of the oldest people there, but she was able to overcome this and succeed. Get Petzey for FREE today ▸ https://petzey.app.link/petcandy Petzey gives you instant access to veterinary professionals 24/7 with one click. Thanks to Petzey for sponsoring! On this episode we meet the phenomenal Reagan Pasternak, you may recognize her from HBO's Sharp Objects, where she played a grown up version of a mean girl. But, what you may not know is that Reagan is the complete opposite of that character, she's kind, sweet, and a passionate animal lover. Reagan started writing ‘Griffin’s Heart’ after the death of her soulmate animal, Griffin, as a way to help heal her wounded heart and find meaning in her grief. Griffin's Heart provides readers with interactive tools, healing exercises, and unwavering companionship to help them navigate their grief and honor the life of their beloved animal ‘being.' The culture of grief when it comes to our animal companions leaves many bereaved pet owners feeling lost and isolated. Too often, the expectation from friends and family is that the mourning period should last no more than a few days to weeks. But the loss of an animal can be equally as devastating as a human loss — it’s just that the support and resources for this brand of grief have been in short supply. Ep 104Holiday special with Living Well

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! I hope you are humming that song now because my brain can’t help but fill in “with kids jingle belling and everyone telling you be of good cheer!” On a serious note, I do believe it is the most wonderful time of the year but sometimes I find myself struggling to go along with the rest of this song and be of good cheer. Instead of slowing down and enjoying the magic that comes with the season, I find myself going at a pace that isn’t sustainable. Then in the blink of an eye, the holidays are over and I am left wondering if I was even present for any of it. I somehow chose to focus on the things that didn’t really matter and missed out on the ones that did. Can you relate? Maybe it’s because you are drowning in your already overflowing “to-do” list or the mere thought of how much money it’s going to take to make the holidays a reality. Or maybe you are approaching the first holiday season without a loved one or better yet, the first where you are focused on remaining sober in a sea of festive spirits. Whatever you are facing this holiday season, I got you covered with the “Living Well Holiday Special”! Inside, you will find everything from healthier recipes to fun gift ideas to insight into being in charge of your finances instead of it being in charge of you. My hope is that this book along with the featured podcasts will leave you not only excited about the holidays but prepared to enjoy them as you should! From my family to yours - Happy Holidays and Happy New Year! Ep 94Vet Candy Magazine: The Fashion Issue

Not very long ago, fashion in the medical world was non-existent. Scrubs were boxy, ill-fitting, and mostly came in unflattering shades of bile green. Fortunately, with the passage of time, medical fashion has evolved. Now we have choices that include fashionable, trendy scrubs with flattering fits and a rainbow assortment of available colors. We all deserve to look and feel good at work. Fashion is a way we can express our personalities. In this issue, we introduce you to twin veterinarians, Dr. Alison Shen and Dr. Audrey Shen who have teamed up with fashion expert and entrepreneur Rebecca Lau Marsh to create 21Scrubs - a company that offers a range of stylish and fashion-savvy scrubs that are practical, flattering, comfortable, and durable.
