UCLAs Rose Bowl Dispute Heads to Trial: UC Regents Seek Stay on Lawsuit

The Rose Bowl Operating Company and UCLA are embroiled in a legal battle over a lease agreement. The company sued UCLA for allegedly breaching the lease, which keeps football games at the stadium until 2044. UCLA, however, wants to move to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

In February, a judge ruled the dispute will go to a jury trial, not arbitration. The judge found the contracts arbitration clause only applies to minor fixes, not the entire deal. UCLA, represented by the UC Regents, argued for arbitration, but Rose Bowl officials countered that the clause is narrowly for routine issues.

The UC Regents have now filed papers to stay the lawsuit while they appeal the arbitration denial. They argue that the issue raises significant questions and UCLA could face harm litigating in court if higher courts side with arbitration. A hearing on this stay motion and a case management conference is set for April 21st. Despite this, UCLA plans to play home games at the Rose Bowl for the 2026 season.
