Washington State Passes Law to Protect Older Foster Youth from Losing Federal Benefits
The state has signed a bipartisan bill to prevent the Department of Children, Youth and Families from taking disability or survivor payments from those aged eighteen to twenty-one in extended foster care. Starting January 1st, around one hundred young people will keep their money in special tax-free savings accounts. Advocates see this as a first step, but push for all foster children to be covered. The practice has been in place for years, but other states like Nebraska, Kansas, Washington D.C., and Arizona have ended it recently.
