Show Notes
A Kurdish immigrant, Sohrab Hanareh-Mafarani, was sentenced to 16 years for smuggling over 500kg of opium into Canada. He was convicted for importing and conspiring to traffic the drug, which was hidden in a container from Pakistan. Hanareh-Mafaranis involvement in the scheme was driven by greed, not addiction. He assaulted and confined an accomplice, and his brother was abducted in Iran, leading to a chilling video. The judge considered the violence as an aggravating factor, but also noted his hard work and strong family ties. Despite arguments for a lesser sentence, Hanareh-Mafarani received 16 years, with about 14 years and 11 months left after credit for time served. Deportation to Iran is expected after his release, and the judge believes reoffending is unlikely due to the tragedy with his brother.
