Show Notes
Camas, Clark Countys first ambulance service, dates back to 1935, predating Cincinnatis by about 70 years. The concept of ambulances traces to ancient battlefields, with Napoleons surgeon Dominique Jean Larrey introducing flying ambulances. During the Civil War, both sides had organized corps for out-of-hospital medical care. Early ambulance services in cities like Vancouver used hearses, police wagons, or fire trucks with minimal training. The National Academy of Sciences report in 1966 led to federal standards for ambulances, ending the use of homemade rigs. Clark County started contracting EMS in 1996, with AMR, fire departments, Camas-Washougal, and North Country EMS now handling ambulance services, adapting to evolving technology.
