Making her professional debut at 26, Darielle O'Brien's pathway to the professional ranks was far from typical. After playing collegiately at UC Riverside, she spent the next few years playing semi-professionally with United City FC in Southern California, still searching for an opportunity to play at the pro level. In 2024, she'd get her shot. With the Summer Olympics enlisting numerous players across the NWSL to national team duty, O'Brien signed with the Utah Royals as a replacement player. She'd eventually sign to the club through the rest of the year, although her contract wasn't renewed come the end of the season. Now a free agent, she understands that this is still the beginning of her journey, and she's eager to make an impact with whichever team signs her next. Since we last spoke to Sam Fisher in August 2022, a lot has changed. The biggest update: She was called up to the El Salvador National team, and made her debut at the Gold Cup, where she scored the team's first goal in the competition. Then came the not-so-good news. After returning from international duty, she was released from the Chicago Red Stars, and is currently in the market for a new club team (although she said there are a few options looming). Such is the life of a pro athlete. One moment you might be celebrating your biggest accomplishment, only to turn around and face a setback. But Fisher has her eyes ahead to the future, and has been training non-stop since she's returned to Southern California. Since joining the Portland Timbers academy at the age of 13, goalkeeper Hunter Sulte has steadily risen the ranks, and made his first-team debut at the age of 19 in 2021. Now looking to become a full-time starter with the Timbers, Sulte will spend the 2024 season on loan to USL Championship side Indy Eleven, where he will compete for the team's starting role and gain valuable experience. Jamar Ricketts doesn't have a typical journey to the professional ranks. He wasn't a highly touted recruit — he only played one year of varsity soccer in high school — yet he was able to blossom into a professional prospect while in college at California State University, Northridge, and earn a contract with the San Jose Earthquakes after being selected with the 14th pick in the MLS Super Draft. But he's not ready to say he's made it yet. Getting to the pros was just another item on his career goal checklist, and now he's focused on staying there and making an impact with his new team.
