"Appear and Disappear: Navigating Hiding and Showing Apps in Messages on iPhone and iPad"

[0:03] Hey all, Marty here. Today I'm coming at you with a quick tip, a messenger tip. So in messages, when you are in the body of a message, at the very bottom, you'll notice there's all these little icons that do different things, such as Apple Pay. Some of them have little stickers, all different kinds of things. If you ever get tired of looking at these things and you want to clean up your app a little bit and make it cleaner, All you have to do is take your finger, put it on the space where you enter text, swipe once to the left, you'll find a little icon that says apps. Double click that and that will hide all of those little icons. And then you have a super clean interface. If you want to bring the apps back, all you have to do is put your finger back on the space where you enter text, swipe once to the left, find that little apps icon, double click it, and it will bring back all those little apps if you want to utilize those once again. [1:19] Feed. We are there every Tuesday 10 a.m. West 1 p.m. East and if you're not signed up you, You can get all the information you need at acb.community. Marty Track 3: [1:32] And we'll see you next time. Thanks a lot. Unmute Presents - Live To Recording Process

Unmute Presents - Live To Recording Process Transcript Jingles Marty: [0:05] So Michael, we get tons of questions, especially recently, people ask us about the process and how we edit our shows. Specifically, you know, we do the unmute call every Tuesday. And then once that show is over, we, you know, edit it, publish it, put it out, and we do all those things, you know. So that would be probably a good primer as that's one of the front facing projects that people see. Because of the live show that we do on Tuesday. So why don't we start with walking through and maybe answering some of the people's questions about that process. So what we do is let's say say we start with a live show in Zoom and we broadcast that out to the world and everyone can come that's live and we're doing it straight out. Once we're done with that and we go off the air, then the editing process and everything starts with the backstage and all the behind the scenes magic happens. So why don't you talk about your workflow from that point once we go off the air and Give us a primer on your process. Michael: [1:27] Yeah, so it starts a little bit before that actually and it starts way back in May I created a zoom room that is always the same and Maybe it was June somewhere around there and the first thing I did as I said always record to the cloud. Being part of ACB community you have to keep a recording on file and everyone's call is recorded So I set it up to automatically record because as we all know I am horrible about remembering to do the things I need to do But that also gives me the added benefit. So let's go back to where you brought us to we get done with the call and then about. [2:01] 15 ish minutes later. I get an email from zoom that says hey your cloud recording is available You can click this link to download it So I click that link and I download what turns out typically to be three or four different files. Which is the audio and video versions of our call? But the video version is typically black because none of us use video So I just disregard that and the sound quality is going to be a little lower than than people would probably want to listen to. So then the next thing that I do is I grab that audio file that I downloaded and I bring it into Reaper and. [2:36] I have a Template and Reaper that allows me to trim out the silence very quickly, So for waiting for someone to unmute I can pull that silence out so. So the listeners on the podcast don't have to wait like everyone else had to, to get someone unmuted and to get them on the call. And then I add some compression and I use a tool called RX Isotope Repair Assistant. And that gives us a constant sound that we are sounding like everyone sounds like they're pretty level and voices are good. In Reaper, I render the file to a Dropbox folder, which is tied to my Alphonic account. And I'll talk about Alphonic in a moment. When I render the file, I check a checkbox that says, add this item to a new track, or add rendered content to a new track as an item. And then I render it. And that means that I take the edits that I made in Reaper and I save them as a file. Typically Flac, a lot of people use Wave. You don't want to save at MP3 right now, but ultimately that's where we're going to get to. Marty: [3:47] Let me stop you right here just for a quick sec because I want to just make sure that people kind of understand this. This is a very important piece that we're forgetting to put in so that people really understand. So the ultimate goal in the end is to make it sound like, we're in the same room, right? So we use Zoom and mostly we use Zoom and its recording features. That's kind of more like an insurance policy and it is actually really good. And we do actually use that a lot of the time. But we also record locally. And so what that means is, I'm recording, locally on my own system, and you're recording locally on your own system. And that's going to be the highest best quality. And you don't hear, you know, all of the hiccups from the internet, you get all that cruft, that all goes away. So if that happens, all good without any issues, then we take our local recordings and that's what we edit from. Those are gonna be the best sounding, the best quality files, and that's what we go with most of the time. There are times that we do use the Zoom, sometimes you just can't get around that. But for most of the time, the ultimate goal is to try and sound like you're in the same room. And the way you achieve that is by recording yourself locally. [5:16] Whoever you're recording with, if that's possible. Once you have all of your recording done, you take the. Local files that you've recorded, and those files are what goes to Michael, and then he edits all of those local files. Unless there's a major issue, then, you know, we have that zoom recording as an actual insurance policy, like a backup if we actually have to use it. So, okay, now go from there. Michael: [5:40] So so t

"Unmute Presents: Unlocking the Secrets of iCloud Encryption with Damashe"

In this episode, Marty and Damashe discuss the ins and outs of iCloud encryption. Damashe explains the difference between regular encryption and advanced data protection, and the implications of each. He also discusses alternative options for those who may not want to use iCloud encryption, such as using a UB key or storing sensitive information in a secure note within iCloud Keychain. Marty and Damashe also touch on the importance of two-factor authentication and being mindful of what information is stored on cloud services. Damashe also mentions how Apple Watch can be used as an authenticator for added convenience. Overall, the main takeaway from the episode is the importance of not forgetting passwords when using advanced data protection, as it can result in losing access to all stored data. Please note that the following is an automatic generated transcript using AI. Any errors or discrepancies may occur. Michael: [0:07] Welcome back to another Unmute podcast. Happy Thursday. I am here with Marty and we have a special guest here. How goes it Marty? Marty: [0:16] Pretty good. Hey all, how's it going? Well, today we do have a special guest, friend of the show and personal friend of ours, Damasi say hello. Damashe: [0:25] Good afternoon. Happy Thursday to everybody. Marty: [0:28] So today we're going to be talking about encryption, specifically iCloud encryption, which was introduced about a month or so ago in a recent update. So Damasi, do you want to start with explaining what this is and how it works? Damashe: [0:48] Yep, so in December, and I am a terrible, terrible preparer, because I don't know the exact date but I do know when iOS 16.2 was released, iPad OS 16.2, Mac OS 13.1 and whatever version of audio OS for the HomePod and tvOS is out. They were all updated in December. With those updates Apple introduced what they call advanced data protection for iCloud. And what this really means at its bare bones is that Apple is giving you the ability, to now take control of holding your own encryption keys so that they no longer have access to the things that you have stored in iCloud, that they previously had access to. This does get a little down in the weeds a bit because there's data Apple has always never had access to. So your health data, your keychain data, if you use iCloud keychain, they've never been able to access that data. They've never had access to it. They've never had the encryption keys to that stuff from day one that they introduced it. However, they're bringing those protections forward to other services, which include iCloud Drive, your photos, and some app data, depending on whether or not the developers choose to take advantage of the APIs that are exposed for them. Marty: [2:16] Well, maybe we can take a step back just for a quick sec and for those maybe who don't know or maybe don't understand Maybe we can explain what exactly encryption is. Damashe: [2:28] Encryption is at a very basic point, and excuse me, anybody that really gets down and understands this a lot, but to kind of simplify it the way I explain it to people is encryption is scrambling your electronic data so that it cannot be read by someone who does not have the key. And you can think of the key simply as a password. You know, that's simplifying it a little bit, but you can think of your key as a password. So a very quick example, if I have a file on my computer, just a regular plain text file, and I write in my credit card number and all of that information, social security number, if I wanna make sure no one else but me can read that file, then I am going to encrypt that file with some piece of software that will basically scramble that data. So if anyone comes along and opens up that file, all they'll get is gibberish. The only way to get that file back into a readable state would be for me to enter a password that then would unscramble that data and allow it to be read. Marty: [3:27] And how do we know if this is something that you would want to turn on or not? How would I know? Do I want this turned on? Do I not want it turned on? How would this benefit me or maybe not benefit me and get me into trouble that I might be in a bigger hole than I would want to be in. Damashe: [3:46] That's a very good question, Marty. So we're going to start with some reasons why you may not want to do this and some of the caveats to think about before even going down the path of exploring turning it on because it's not for everyone. Apple has introduced this because a lot of people do need theseprotections but not everybody does. One caveat to this is if you turn on, advanced data protection for iCloud you then become responsible for your data 100% Apple syncs it for you, absolutely. And they also make sure, you know, they do a lot of double checking and ensuring that you have certain things in place before you turn this on. And I'll cover some of those a little bit later, but you don't need this if you're just a casual user and

This transcript was auto generated. 02] This is an ACB Community Call presented by American Council of the Blind. [0:10] Music. [0:18] This Unmute Presents Community Call was hosted on Tuesday, January 3rd, 2023. Welcome everybody to another Tuesday. I hope everyone had a great holiday and everyone had fun and had a healthy, happy holiday. Want to remind everyone that, make sure that you respect everyone the same way that you would want to be respected with your questions and give everyone the same opportunities as you would want. We're going to go firsthand through. And then if we have enough time, we'll take people's second questions. So you can go ahead and raise your hands and get that going. Uh, it'd be interesting to hear if anyone got any new gadgets over the holidays or maybe any new gadget services. [1:08] Also, I want to introduce you to Michael Babcock and he has a couple of announcements for us as well. Hey Michael. Hey Marty. Are you saying people don't know me? You're introducing me. Anyways, I'm introducing you. Yeah. Yeah. I don't know who I am. So I got some new gadgets that I can fill people's ears with if we don't get any hands But a couple of the announcement well, I got one new one, but it looks like we do have a hand But I will go through the announcements real quick We did publish a couple of podcast episodes to the unmute presents on. [1:39] ACB community feed and and there was a little bit of confusion with that this morning So if you want to get all of the content that we publish including the content on Thursdays more longer form content and Sundays more shorter form content in your favorite podcast app just search for unmute presents and you'll find one that says unmute presents on ACB community that is the only podcast feed that we have our podcasts or our unmute present shows are also published to the ACB community podcast feed so I think that's That's where some confusion may have arisen earlier today, but just search for Unmute, Presents and you'll find Unmute Presents on the ACB community with Marty Sobo and Michael Babcock as the hosts. Speaking of that podcast on Sunday, I published a, Different style. I'm not sure that I'm sold on that style. So if anyone listened to it, I'd love some feedback on it But a different type of of Sunday type of content, which was talking about day one journaling My intention was hey, let's start New Year's out with a brief overview of the day one journaling app for those who may be, Interested in journaling and documenting their their life and experiences This usually lasts for about three to five months for me and then I lose track of itSo I'll be fully fully transparent about that though be kind of cool to get a a. [3:06] 365 day journaling streak so, you know, we'll see what happens with that and then on Thursday We published a episode where Demos Demosy Marty and I talk about our audio, setups and what we're doing for audio and how we've been, Configuring our devices and then of course we have last week's call with Michael Dois that was published last Tuesday in the podcast feed. Just a couple more things real quick and then we'll get into it. The next Tuesday, the 10th, we will have a individual from Raz Mobility to come talk to us about the Mini Vision 2 phone, which I've been playing with it over the last couple of days and I kinda like this phone. It's kind of cool. Doesn't have a lot of the added features that some of the other devices have, but it is a very durable form factor and the buttons are big.So I'll hint at that. And if you want more information about the Mini Vision 2, feel free to join us next Tuesday. And as I said, RAS Mobility will be here. That's all the announcements I have. Sheila, do we have any hands? You do, Cindy. [4:15] You may unmute. Hello, Cindy. Hey, Cindy, how's it going? Good. Michael, I got my charger card for my headphones. Now I have a question. You said it was going to work out of both ears, but it's not. Is there any way to fix that? So what do you mean? You're not getting audio out of both ears? Right. And are you using it wired or wirelessly? I'm using Bluetooth, yeah. Okay, so you're using Bluetooth. And what are you playing content on? Is it your phone? Yeah, my phone. Okay. And it's like music that's only playing out of one ear? No, it's everything music, shows, movies, whatever it is. So and voiceovers only coming out of one ear as well? Um, I haven't used voiceover yet, but okay. Okay. Well not okay. Um, it sounds like there may be a balance Setting and accessibility that we may need to change. [5:18] That is that is unique because it should be playing out of both ears and I promise you it's not as as problematic as it seems to have been so. [5:28] Give me a call. I will be in tomorrow morning starting at 7 a.m AM our time. So give me a call and we can help troubleshoot it. And if we need to, we can get a replacement headset out to you because, uh, it should be playing out of both channels out

Security Bits — 23 January 2022 Auto Generated Transcript Unmute Presents - Ios 16.2 The Your Own Pay Podcast Network Transcript Music Marty Sobo: [0:13] Hey all, we are back today with another Unmute podcast. Update of 16.2 has been released. This has been released to all of the things. So it's on your computer, it's on your phone, iPad, watch, all across the board. It is everywhere. And there's some great new features that have come out and we're going to discuss those today. With me, I've got Michael Babcock, say hello Michael. Michael Babcock: [0:42] Hello, Michael. Marty Sobo: [0:44] And I've got Michael Dois with me as well, say hello Michael. Michael Doise: [0:47] Hello everyone. Marty Sobo: [0:49] So we're going to start out with an app that they actually have on all of the devices. So you have it on the Mac computer as well as iPhone and iPad. And this is called the Freeform. This is an infinite place that you can jot down your ideas. You can either type, you can use a pencil or pen, all of the things. So to get more in detail and really talk to us about what you can do with Freeform, today we're going to have Michael discuss with us what Freeform is, what you can do with it, how it works. So Michael, why don't you give us a primer on it? Michael Doise: [1:26] Sure. So Freeform is a new app in iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. It's a collaboration tool. And what it lets you do is it's an infinite canvas where you can add shapes and lines and arrows and, visual elements to create like flow diagrams and things like that to this canvas. And you You can add text boxes or sticky notes or things like that, to this canvas, change colors and all those things. And the neat thing is it's all accessible with voiceover. So I can drag and drop an item onto the canvas. I can even grab the handles of that box to resize it with voiceover, double tap and hold and drag, or use rotor actions. That works as well to do all these things. So it's a really neat app. And I feel like it was delayed. It was originally supposed to be out in 16, but I'm glad they took some more time on it and really filled that out. So Freeform is pretty neat to play with. I haven't found a general purpose for actually using it, but I know a lot of business folks and people will be able to share accessibly with that. So at least check it out, figure out if you like it or not, and go from there. Marty Sobo: [2:47] Yeah, it's a great way to share if you're having a meeting and you want to jot stuff down and you want everyone in the meeting to be able to see, you know, notes or diagrams, you can import all kinds of documents, PDFs, markup, all that kind of stuff. So it's good in that sense. One thing I will say, which I feel is a little bit of a bummer, but it just all depends on your preference. It does not have dark mode. So you're always going to have that bright white background unless you drag a black shape onto the work area. But as a default, there is no dark mode. Anything else that you can think of that you want to say about it? It does work with voiceover and the other accessibility features, so that's good. Michael Doise: [3:38] It works with zooming and all those things, so it's worth checking out for sure. Marty Sobo: [3:43] All right, so the next thing that we have is Apple Music Sing. So this is where Apple Music is now showing the lyrics so that you can do karaoke. So anyone want to chime in and discuss how this works? Michael Doise: [4:00] So Apple Music Sing, they've always shown, or for several versions, they've shown the lyrics so you could do karaoke and so you can read the lyrics as it goes on. The difference here is that from what I've understood, you can lower the vocal track in a song so that you can sing out the lyrics and you can probably do share play and things like that so you can do karaoke online with your friends. So it's more of a, you know, online karaoke tool, which I think is pretty neat where you could just lower the track and do those kinds of things. It's not on every song though, folks, so I believe only certain songs are supported with Apple Music Sing. Michael Babcock: [4:41] Somewhere else. Marty Sobo: [4:44] The next feature that was released was called iCloud Enhanced Data Protection. And what this does is it encrypts all of your data for end to end. So Michael, you want to talk about this a little bit and what this does? Michael Babcock: [4:58] Sure, sure. So not only did Apple increase the encryption levels and security aspects of iOS, which they talked about in the WWDC of 2022, but they also have brought in these features and made them live. I am super excited about iCloud Private Relay, wh

You can tune into this call live every Tuesday. Visit acb.community to learn more about what is up coming. The following transcript was auto generated: 2022-12-13 - Unmute Presents The Your Own Pay Podcast Network Unmute Presents [0:01] This is an ACB Community Call presented by American Council of the Blind. [0:11] Music. [0:18] This Unmute Presents Education Series was hosted on Tuesday, December 13th, 2022. All right, welcome everyone to our first education event, photography. So we're gonna be doing that today. I just wanted to remind everyone here at the top, we're gonna follow the same rules when it comes to questions, make sure everyone gets their first question answered. And then if we get through everyone, we'll take second questions. If you have any comments, questions, or you need to get ahold of us, You can email us at unmutepresents at gmail.com. Michael, how's it going? What do you got for us today? [1:06] Mark Nielsen Oh, see? That's what happens when we double mute ourselves! Anyways, it's going well, Marty. Thanks for asking. So, as Marty said, we have something a little bit different this time. I believe we'll have an opportunity for questions and answers to be asked. However, I also have some new announcements to make. So firstly, let's get the elephant in the room out of the way. We have been podcasting a lot more content now. So we've almost tripled the amount of content that's coming out in the podcast feed. On last Thursday, we had a podcast that dropped between Marty and myself and it was about 26 minutes long talking about backing up and being able to backup your content and make sure that you are secure as well as backup power solutions. In addition on Sunday I published a short form piece of content that's talking about how to subscribe to the Unmute Presents Podcast. I know. [2:12] If you don't know how to subscribe to the Unmute Presents podcast, how are you going to hear the podcast to help you subscribe to the Unmute Presents podcast? Anyways, I just wanted to throw that out there for people who are interested in overcast. My thought was you may be subscribed somewhere else, so maybe you're interested in how to do it in overcast. Lastly, very important, after some requests from individuals and some desires, I can confirm that I have a representative from Raz Mobility, the company that makes the MiniVision and SmartVision phones, coming to speak at Unmute on January 10th. So we'll remind people, especially those who are regular visitors to the Unmute Presents call, that January 10th at 10 a.m. Pacific time, so our regular time, that's 1 p.m. Raz Mobility will come and demonstrate slash talk about the mini vision line of products and, Sounds like they'll be shipping me one to test out. So hopefully I'll have some more feedback on that So that's the announcements I have remember that this podcast will be podcast This call will be podcasted, Shortly after the end of it and with that we have a special person here So Michael is going to hand it off to Michael to introduce himself and talk about, Photography from a visually impaired individuals perspective. Hey Michael. [3:35] Hi everyone. Thank you guys so much for having me. Thanks Marty and Michael It is, you know an honor and a pleasure to be here with you guys once again if you guys remember I, Was with you guys before when we discussed way around the tagging and scanning solution, for your iPhone and Android so if I'm sure You can go back and listen to that, but I'm back again on a multi-part series. And this is a very... [4:05] Close topic to me because I feel like I'm a photography person. I love taking photos. While I was a teacher at the Chris Cole Rehabilitation Center, I did a photography class occasionally. So I figured it would be neat for us to do this in a podcast form, and where we can do it over several sessions. It won't be every week, but we will do this occasionally. To talk about photography. And, you know, a lot of people think, okay, I have an iPhone, it's got a camera on it, I can use it to read things or use it with sighted assistance to. [4:50] See something or things like that. And most people think I don't want to take pictures because I can't see them. Well, the truth of the matter is that there are a lot of ways that you you can enjoy photography or you could use it to share with your family. And today we're going to keep it simple. We'll go into more of the apps in a later session. We'll talk about a few things today, but the biggest thing that I want to talk about is the fundamentals and I may open up the camera app with voiceover a little bit just to show that off. But the biggest thing, the most important thing, is to know that you can use the camera on your phone. [5:41] To take good pictures. And it doesn't matter if you have a little bit of vision, a lot of vision, no vision, it really makes no difference. We can all take great pictures with our phones. And that's why we're here today. And so one
