Magnotta became infamous after anonymously posting videos of himself torturing cats. This infuriated enough people that a Facebook group was formed and some amateur (or not so amateur) sleuthing was done. Eventually this savvy Facebook group tracked down Magnotta and tried to get police involved. The police were slow to act until Magnotta switch from harming animals... to harming humans.
