Ep 98Episode 98: A Different Drummer
Nathan and Eppy take a look at the final episode guest starring Jesse Welles, S5E20 A Different Drummer. Jim witnesses a bizarre surgical procedure while in the hospital, and obsessively tracks down the surgeon to find out what's going on. Starting out a mystery, and transitioning to a character study of a horror-movie-inflected villain, this was an interesting episode to end the fifth season on. Unfortunately, it has the least Jesse Welles of her three appearances, but her airheaded "anti-Rockford" is a memorable character to round out her time on the show. Ep 96Episode 96: Roundabout
Nathan and Eppy return to Las Vegas in S1E22 Roundabout. Jim is hired for a straightforward gig to find an insurance beneficiary - Nancy, the beneficiary, isn't making much money as a Vegas lounge singer, but it seems simple enough to give her a check. But when she runs, then is grabbed by goons, Jim has to act fast to save his paycheck. The final episode of Season One takes us to the Vegas lounge, a clown selling hot dogs and the Hoover Dam. Ep 95Episode 95: The Dexter Crisis
Nathan and Eppy go to Vegas in S1E10 The Dexter Crisis. Jim is hired by the titular Dexter to find Susan, his mistress who suddenly took off, and quickly ends up partnered with her roommate Louise as they head to the only lead they have: Las Vegas. They find Susan quickly enough, but then a sudden attack, a rival PI and a mysterious suitcase complicate the story. Jim needs to find out what's going on to get paid, and the chase takes us down a number of scenic Nevada byways. A fun episode that features some foundational Rockfordishness, we enjoyed it despite a few little dangling plot threads. We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 94Episode 94: The Becker Connection
Nathan and Eppy get to see Jim helping out a friend in S3E16: The Becker Connection. Becker's been moonlighting with the Narco squad, and suddenly some stolen heroin shows up in his car tire! Suspended while under investigation by internal affairs, Dennis turns to Jim for any help he can provide - which involves Angel, a washed-up Vegas comedian, and turning the tables on a crooked cop. We get to see a lot of good character beats woven into a fun plot, and found this one a great episode that really delivers what we tune into the show for! Ep 93Episode 93: Irving the Explainer
Nathan and Eppy dive into one of the most oddball episodes, S4E8 Irving the Explainer. It's an intentionally obtuse episode that really benefits from seeing it cold - if you haven't, be warned that we might spoil the fun with our discussion! Written by David Chase, this episode seems to be a pretty polarizing one, and we talk about the various lenses through which you can view it to find the fun. Content warning: the episode isn't really about Naziism, but it contains references to Nazis and Nazi sympathizers, and includes newsroom footage of Hitler in the opening credits. Ep 92Episode 92: South by Southeast
Nathan and Eppy join Jim in an unexpected trip across the border in S4E18 South by Southeast. Due to a mistaken postal address, Jim is taken for a CIA operative and whisked away for a high-stakes meeting with a rich socialite, who he quickly discovers is in trouble herself. Despite a serious class divide, we watch romance blossom while Jim does his best to keep her from danger. This fun character study of an episode uses the North by Northwest homage framing to get things going, so if seeing Jim get out of his element is something you enjoy, this is one to check out for sure! We mention the James Garner Animal Rescue Fund in this one. Check that out and consider making a donation at jgarf.org (https://www.jgarf.org). We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 91Episode 91: Friends and Foul Play
Nathan and Eppy return to 1996 to talk about the fifth TV movie, Friends and Foul Play. Jim's friend Babs ends up dead after asking him to help her find out more about the murder of her son. Before he can even start to investigate, Captain Chapman turns up with a class of criminology majors, messing both with the crime scene and with Jim's efforts - so, of course, he has to join the class himself in order to skirt Chapman's ire and bring Babs killer to justice! It's always a blast seeing all the characters we know so well effortlessly re-inhabited, and this Stephen Cannell script is full of classic Rockfordishness. Though there's a few plot elements that seem to sprawl out of nowhere, we really enjoyed this visit to the movies! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 90Episode 90: Listener Q&A Special

Ep 89Episode 89: Caledonia - It's Worth a Fortune!
Nathan and Eppy spend some time in the Firebird in S1E11 Caledonia - It's Worth a Fortune! Jim is hired by a woman who's imprisoned husband buried a treasure trove, and she wants to find it in order to help get him the medical help he needs. However, he only gave her part of the puzzle. After her old flame appears with the other half, Jim has to both deal himself in and somehow keep them working together to find the fortune. Directed by Stuart Margolin, this is a fun, concentrated romp chock-full of Rockfordishness! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 88Episode 88: Requiem for a Funny Box
Nathan and Eppy go to the comedy club in S4E6 Requiem for a Funny Box. Washed-up comedian Kenny Bell asks Jim for some help after his "funny box" is stolen, but the exchange draws Jim into a mob murder! Untangling the murder requires Jim to suffer through getting the real story from the self-interested Kenny. Content Warning: This episode has quite a reveal (which we talk about in our intro) having to do with virulent homophobia and related off-screen violence. This is a good episode with some serious tonal shifts that make it interesting, but not necessarily one we'd recommend over other episodes. We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 87Episode 87: Season Two Draft Special
Nathan and Eppy have talked about every episode of Season Two, and celebrate with a draft of our favorites! Both a retrospective of the season and a walk down memory lane for our own show, we really had a great time assembling this list of ten great episodes of The Rockford Files. We borrowed this format from The Incomparable (https://www.theincomparable.com/theincomparable/) (a recommended listen for geeky pop culture fans!) Spoiler Alert: Here's our final "teams" from our draft: Nathan picked: * The Farnsworth Strategem * Joey Blue Eyes * A Portrait of Elizabeth * The Italian Bird Fiasco * The Hammer of C Block Eppy picked: * Chicken Little is a Little Chicken * Gearjammers (pt 1 and 2) * Resurrection in Black & White * The Aaron Ironwood School of Success * Girl in the Bay City Boys Club We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 86Episode 86: The Real Easy Red Dog
Nathan and Eppy finish out Season 2 of The Rockford Files with s2e7 The Real Easy Red Dog. Jim is hired to look into an apparent suicide, and indeed discovers some evidence of murder - but he was hired under false pretenses in the first place! Tina, also a PI, just needed Jim to throw the cops off from her own case, but now they have to work together to solve a murder before the killer comes after them. It's a tight episode with great plotting and some wonderful visual flairs, we really liked this one! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 85Episode 85: Joey Blue Eyes
Nathan and Eppy cover the penultimate episode (for us) of Season 2, Ep17 Joey Blue Eyes. Beth has an ex-con friend who's running into trouble with their straight restaurant business, and despite initial friction, Jim finally agrees to help out. Between loan sharks, Beth, Angel, quick cons and sparkling dialogue, this episode just exudes Rockfordishness. It's also the first appearance of James Luisi on the show, as villain Burt Stryker, and he's just as entertaining as his later recurring role as Lt. Chapman. This is a good one, folks! Nathan mentions this obituary (https://www.independent.com/obits/2014/04/01/walter-charles-dallenbach/) of the writer of this episode, Walter Dallenbach. We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 84Episode 84: Where's Houston?
Nathan and Eppy continue the second season tour with S2E20 Where's Houston? One of Rocky's old buddies comes to Jim for help after receiving a ransom demand for his granddaughter Houston - but it shortly becomes clear that, not only did he not have any money, she wasn't even kidnapped! Unfortunately, he turns up dead, sending Jim on the hunt not only for who killed him, but what the whole fake kidnapping was about, all while handling Houston's building emotions. A great character episode! We mention Lane Bradbury's documentary From the Midst of Pain (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1071927/?ref_=nm_knf_t1) in this episode. Ep 83Episode 83: Foul on the First Play
Nathan and Eppy explore the origin episode of one of our favorite guest characters in S2E21 Foul on the First Play. Louis Gossett Jr. plays Marcus Hayes, a fast talking PI who needs Jim's help to untangle a sticky situation concerning the purchase of a new basketball franchise. Marcus was at one time Jim's parole officer and they didn't part on good terms... but once Hayes tricks Jim into taking a beating on his behalf, they need to work together to come out the other side in one piece. Ep 82Episode 82: The Deep Blue Sleep
Nathan and Eppy start wrapping up Season 2 with S2E5 The Deep Blue Sleep. Beth needs Jim's help to find out what happened to a model friend, and the search leads to a fashion designer, a shady business deal and, of course, the mob. One of the few creative contributions from producer Chas. Floyd Johnson, we enjoyed the twists and character business in this one a whole lot! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 81Episode 81: Star Trek Voyager - Bride of Chaotica!
Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the adventures of Captain Proton in Voyager S5E12 Bride of Chaotica! Tom Paris and Harry Kim just want to have a nice time playing out the latest chapter of the Captain Proton holonovel, but the ship runs afoul of photonic beings that think the black-and-white pulp is real. Of course, the only way to solve this mess is for Captain Janeway to take on the role of Arachnia in order to bring the vile Dr. Chaotica down before the program causes real destruction to the photonic visitors. Everyone in this one is clearly having a blast, and we really enjoyed talking about it! Happy April, everyone! This is our fourth look at a Star Trek holodeck episode that follows on the themes of our first love, The Rockford FIles. Hope you enjoy it! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 80Episode 80: A Good Clean Bust with Sequel Rights
Nathan and Eppy join Jim in S5E6 A Good Clean Bust with Sequel Rights, as he's hired to babysit the celebrity cop Frank Falcone (Hector Elizondo) in advance of a big toy line opening. Falcone isn't exactly the role model he's being advertised as, and after he beats up his ex-partner, Jim gets fired - but now they're both being followed by goons from Calumet City, IL. Jim and Frank need to work together to figure out who's in danger and stop a hit before it's too late! We found the plot of this episode to be pretty unremarkable, but the Jim-Frank dynamic makes for a good vibe, and we had fun talking about it. Freeze, Turkey! Plus, we debut our new Answering Machine segment to address listener feedback! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Ep 79Episode 79: Never Send a Boy King to Do a Man's Job
Nathan and Eppy complete the Richie Brockelman duology with S5E19-20, Never Send a Boy King to Do a Man's Job. Richie's dad has been muscled out of the family printing business by an unscrupulous villain. The only way he can see to get it back is to run a con game on the mark... and that's where Jim comes in. Split into two episodes for syndication, this is another 2-hour-timeslot episode which gives us plenty of breathing room to appreciate all of the work that goes into a "big store" con game. This is really a wonderful episode, and we break it down in terms of the con game strategy Jim and Richie use before going into the scenes. Highly recommended! We mention the book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man by David Maurer. Check it out at Indiebound (https://www.indiebound.org/book/9780385495387) or wherever you get your books! Ep 78Episode 78: The House on Willis Avenue
Nathan and Eppy finally tackle a long-anticipated long episode, S4E21 The House on Willis Avenue. Split into two episodes for syndication, this episode is both a pilot for a spinoff show about young investigator Richie Brockelman, and an issue episode tackling the growing use of private data by unscrupulous private entities (in this instance, a technophile villain played to great effect by Jackie Cooper). Still relevant today, we found this episode to be a well-told story that blended all of its agendas into an entertaining and memorable whole. Highly recommended! We mention the Privacy Act of 1974 in our ending summary. Here's the Department of Justice page (https://www.justice.gov/opcl/privacy-act-1974) on the act itself, and here's the text of the report of the Privacy Protection Study Commission (the text on which we think the final screen is based): Personal Privacy in an Information Society (https://epic.org/privacy/ppsc1977report/). Ep 77Episode 77: The Trouble with Warren
Nathan and Eppy spend some quality family time with Jim, Beth and her annoying cousin in S3E11 The Trouble with Warren. When Warren is framed for murder, Beth turns to Jim for help. Despite his best efforts Jim ends up investigating the case, and then once another body surfaces he needs to solve it in order to save both their hides. We found this one to be a "meaty middle" episode, with a lot of things to like but nothing in particular to recommend it. That's the problem with this show, the episodes are all too good! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Covering our non-Rockford media, games and life chatter, Plus Expenses is available via our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday) at ALL levels of support. Ep 76Episode 76: A Material Difference
Nathan and Eppy go under cover to talk about S5E19 A Material Difference. Angel has the perfect scam - pretend to be a hit man, take the half up front and move on. Unfortunately his first gig involves international espionage, and a chance meeting with Jim draws Rockford in against his will. This is a wild romp of an episode! We found it to not be totally solid around the edges but a joy to watch, especially for the focus on the Jim-Angel dynamic, one of our favorites! We have another podcast: Plus Expenses. Covering our non-Rockford media, games and life chatter, Plus Expenses is available via our Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday) at ALL levels of support. Ep 75Episode 75: The Dog and Pony Show
Nathan and Eppy join Jim and Angel in group therapy for S4E5 The Dog and Pony Show. In lieu of a jail sentence for something Angel stole and hid in Jim's car, this therapy group is a pretty good deal, until fellow participant Mary Jo has someone actually break into her house. Jim agrees to help, and a couple of goons and one Firebird chase later realizes that something Mary Jo knows is putting them all in danger. A listener suggestion, we really enjoyed this David Chase-written episode - it has all the elements we love about the show, as well as a familiar face that delighted us upon his surprise appearance! Ep 74Episode 74: The Great Blue Lake Land and Development Company
<p>Nathan and Eppy take a road trip to S2E6: The Great Blue Lake Land and Development Company. After Jim is ripped off in a small town, he needs to get his 10 grand back - but nobody is talking. He brings in Rocky and a fast-talking con buddy, but everything changes before they can run the con! While it felt to us like it didn't have the full Rockfordishness that we see in later seasons, this is a fun episode with a lot of individual points to like! </p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 73Episode 73: Resurrection in Black & White
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about S2E8 Resurrection in Black & White. Jim is hired by a magazine reporter named Susan to help clear the name of a man who's been in jail for 6 years for a murder he says he didn't commit. The case is pretty cold, but with Jim and Susan's powers combined they manage to figure out what happened and track down the culprits - in a motorboat, no less! We really enjoyed this episode, especially the chemistry between Jim and Susan and the nuanced character work woven into their story. Plus, we get to talk about director Russ Mayberry, as this is his last appearance on our show!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 72Episode 72: Dwarf in a Helium Hat
<p>Nathan and Eppy get a look at the wild party scene of 70s LA in S4E17 Dwarf in a Helium Hat. Jim gets a threatening phone call, but to the wrong number! His conscience can't let this sit, and in trying to track down Jay Rockfelt to warn him of the impending danger, he gets dragged in to a life-and-death situation with a jersey mobster who just wants to be taken seriously. Though this one has a bit of a thing plot, it's a fun episode with some particularly amazing dialogue!</p> <p>We mention Gigi Garner's James Garner Animal Rescue Fund, <a href = "https://www.jgarf.org">check it out at jgarf.org<\a>!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 71Episode 71: Black Lives Matter (A Plus Expenses Special)
<p>Black Lives Matter. Ep 70Episode 70: Coulter City Wildcat
<p>Nathan and Eppy go wildcatting with Jim and Rocky in S3E6 Coulter City Wildcat. Rocky is forced to sign over the mineral rights to a oil lease he won in a lottery he's been playing, and Jim is determined to find out why his dad was roughed up and what scam is at the heart of the matter. They take a road trip to Coulter City to unravel a stubborn mystery, and we have a great time riding along with them in their efforts. While we found the mechanics of the plot to be little obscure, this is a hell of a fun episode overall!</p> <p>Here's the link to the economics paper about oil leasing we talk about - <a href = "https://isis2.cc.oberlin.edu/faculty/pbrehm/BrehmLewis_WY_Leasing.pdf">To Trade or Not To Trade: Oil Leases, Information Asymmetry, and Coase (2019)</a></p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 69Episode 69: The Hawaiian Headache
<p>Nathan and Eppy take a sun-soaked trip to S6E8 The Hawaiian Headache. Jim and Rocky won a trip to Hawaii! Jim doesn't get to enjoy a minute of it before being brought into an issue of national security by an old Korean War sergeant. Things go from bad to worse as he juggles a missing agent, a briefcase with $10K, gangsters and a murder charge. A silly episode, without much mystery to speak of but a lot of good gags!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 68Episode 68: Star Trek DS9 - Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang
<p>Welcome to Twenty Dollars a Day, the podcast where we explore our favorite fictional characters in the Star Trek universe! Nathan and Eppy discuss the holodeck-hosted heist in S7E15 Badda-Bing, Badda-Bang. Vic Fontaine's lounge is suddenly taken over by a hidden variable in his always-on program, the bridge crew has to pull together to help out their holographic buddy. A loving homage to films like Ocean's Eleven, we really enjoyed both watching our friends make and execute on a plan, and the opportunity to talk about a holodeck episode that doesn't stem from technological disaster.</p> <p>Happy April, everyone! We're happy to take our third annual look at Star Trek holodeck episodes that follow on the themes of our first love, The Rockford FIles. Ep 65Episode 65: The Man Who Saw the Alligators
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about the second "Anthony Boy" Gagglio episode, S05E17 The Man Who Saw the Alligators. Last seen with a police bullet in his gut at the end of Season 3's To Protect and Serve, Anthony Boy is out of jail and seeking revenge on the man he blames for his problems: Jim Rockford. Jim, dealing with oral surgery and an IRS audit, doesn't know what's coming. This 90-minute episode is another compelling David Chase portrait of obsession, and we really have a lot to say both about the technique and all of the amazing details as we follow Tony's journey into darkness.</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 64Episode 64: A Plus Expenses Special
<p>Time for a state of the podcast episode! Ep 63Episode 63: To Protect and Serve (Two-Part Episode)
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about a remarkable two-parter from Season 3, To Protect and Serve. Jim is hired to find a run-away bride from New York, but that quickly becomes the background to the drama stemming from the interference of a police "buff" named Lianne who's fallen for Dennis. Ultimately a character study of the obsessive Lianne, this David Chase-written story balances all of our familiar characters with the her narrative focus, as well as introducing a new foe for Jim in the character of hit man "Anthony Boy" Gagglio - more about him in our next episode. Highly recommended!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 62Episode 62: Sticks and Stones May Break Your Bones, But Waterbury Will Bury You
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about the long-titled S3E13 Sticks and Stones Will Break Your Bones, But Waterbury Will Bury You. Jim comes back from vacation to learn that fellow PIs are losing their licenses through a series of set-ups. He teams up with a crack squad of motormouths to figure out what's going on, who's behind it, and why the private security firm Waterbury wants to do this in the first place. It's a fun David Chase-penned romp with that lovely Rockford Files stiffening of fantastic character play from guests Cleavon Little, Simon Oakland and Val Bisoglio. </p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 61Episode 61: The Italian Bird Fiasco
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about S2E19 The Italian Bird Fiasco. Jim takes a seemingly easy job bidding for a Cormorant statue at an art auction, but once it's broken in an assault by goons it quickly becomes clear that there's more to this job than it seems! A very funny episode with a great supporting cast, we enjoyed the ride even though the story itself was a little under (or over?) explained for our taste.</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 60Episode 60: Godfather Knows Best (Live!)
<p>To celebrate our 60th episode, Nathan and Eppy are joined again by Emily Care Boss to talk about the fourth 90s Rockford Files Movie - Godfather Knows Best. But that's not all! We recorded this episode live as we watched the movie, all together in the same place! You can hear us hypothesize the twists and turns of this David Chase-penned script as Jim tries to help his godson, Becker's son Scott, out of trouble. We really had a great time, and came away feeling that this was the strongest of the movies so far. We hope you enjoy this change of pace for our show!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 59Episode 59: Rosendahl and Gilda Stern Are Dead
<p>Nathan and Eppy discuss the second appearance of Rita Moreno on the show, in S5E2 Rosendahl and Gilda Stern Are Dead. Jim's friend Rita is witness to a murder, and quickly blamed for it just because she's a prostitute! Jim, of course, wants to help clear her name - but things turn more serious as they uncover evidence of a string of murders, all connected to a mobster played by Abe Vigota. It's a great character study in a villain who thinks he's a victim, and as always the Rita-Jim chemistry is so fun to watch, that's worth the price of admission all on its own!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 58Episode 58: The Battle-Ax and the Exploding Cigar
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about S5E14 The Battle-Ax and the Exploding Cigar. In some ways a parody of spy thrillers, Jim gets accidentally drawn into a plot by a national security operative that involves illegal gun-running - and in short order the FBI and ATF are also involved. Jim teams up with the no-nonsense Mrs. Bateman, head of the Federal Building steno pool, to figure out what happened to one of her secretaries, and in the process unravel this covert operation. It's a fun romp!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 57Episode 57: Guilt
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about S5E15: Guilt. The woman that Jim almost married calls him out of the blue - someone is trying to kill her! Jim has to handle not only the puzzle of her mysterious assailant, but also how Valerie uses their past relationship to get what she wants out of him. The title of the episode is indeed the main emotional theme, and we find it to be a well-told but, in some ways, difficult story. It does have perhaps the most spectacular vehicle chase we've seen so far, though! </p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 55Episode 55: Profit and Loss (Two-Part Episode)
<p>Nathan and Eppy take a look at the first two-part episode from the first season, Profit and Loss (E12 and 13). Starring Ned Beatty as the villainous CEO of a fraudulent investment firm, this two-parter is very much one linear story through both episodes. Though it features a number of wonderful Jim Rockford moments, and gives us a lot of good Rocky material, we can't help but feel like the big climax is a bit of a let-down given the extensive buildup. On the other hand, it does have perhaps the greatest 3-minute hot-dog related scene in all of the Rockford Files!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 53Episode 53: The Reincarnation of Angie
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about S2E12 The Reincarnation of Angie. Jim gets a call from the panicked Angie, concerned about a mysterious call from her now-missing brother Tom. Things escalate after they find half a million in cash in Tom's wall safe, and Jim calls in a friend from the FBI to help track down what happened to Tom, and why someone is now after Angie. A curious episode that showcases Jim's tradecraft, we found that it has a bit of a mismatch between the emotional beats and the narrative, both of which are very strong on their own. </p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 52Episode 52: The Paper Palace
<p>Nathan and Eppy talk about the first appearance of Rita Moreno on The Rockford Files in S4E16 The Paper Palace. When a pair of French-speaking tough guys assault Moreno's character, Rita Capkovic, the police don't seem very interested in helping out a known prostitute. While Dennis is a friend, she ends up hiring Jim to find out why anyone would want to hurt her - and when one of her only other friends, an elderly woman, is killed, it ups the stakes of the mystery. This episode shines as a nuanced portrait of a woman who lives her life unapologetically in the face of judgement, and the character work throughout is fantastic - overall, one of the great episodes of the show!</p> <p>In this episode, we mention <a href = "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNDzTWR28lk">Rita Moreno's Emmy acceptance speech</a>, and <a href = "https://variety.com/2016/tv/awards/rita-moreno-juanita-bartlett-emmy-speech-the-rockford-files-1201791748/">a Variety piece</a> where she talks about it in more detail. <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 51Episode 51: Drought at Indianhead River
<p>Nathan and Eppy discuss S3E5 Drought at Indianhead River. Jim gets a tip that Angel's life is in danger, but "Angelo" is too high on his newfound success in real estate to take the threat seriously. Determined to save Angel despite himself, Jim drags him along as he fends off both the mob and the cops to try and figure out why his friend is on a hit list. A wonderful showcase of the Angel-Rockford relationship, focusing on just how much Jim can take, we really like this one! It has some unexamined plot devices and uses institutionalization for comedic effect, which aren't our favorite elements, but in terms of watching Jim and Angel at their best, it's hard to top!</p> <p>We now have a second, patron-exclusive, podcast - Plus Expenses. Ep 50Episode 50: If The Frame Fits...
<p>To celebrate our 50th episode, Nathan and Eppy discuss the third 90s Rockford Files TV movie: If The Frame Fits... This feels like the first true reunion movie, as it features not only Angel and Dennis, but Chapman, Diehl and, triumphantly, a returning Beth Davenport! Jim has been framed for the murder of another PI, and this movie hums right along just like the best of the 70s shows as he figures out what's going on while on the run from the law. Our favorite so far!</p> <p>While the story and script are snappy and have all the hallmarks we love from the 70s era, the real joy of this movie is that the character work and chemistry on screen is as strong as ever. It even winds in an in-character tribute to the passing of Noah Beery, deftly serving the story as well as us as audience members by integrating the fact that Rocky is gone into Jim's emotional journey. </p> <p>Want more Rockford Files trivia, notes and ephemera? <a href = "http://tinyurl.com/200files">Check out the Two Hundred a Day Rockford Files Files</a>!</p> <p><strong>Support the podcast by <a href = "https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday">subscribing at patreon.com/twohundredaday</a></strong>. Paoletta and Epidiah Ravachol. We are exploring the intensely weird and interesting world of the 70s TV detective show The Rockford Files. Half celebration and half analysis, we break down episodes of the show and then analyze how and why they work as great pieces of narrative and character-building. In each episode of Two Hundred a Day, we watch an episode, recap and review it as fans of the show, and then tease out specific elements from that episode that hold lessons for writers, gamers and anyone else interested in making better narratives.</p>

Ep 49Episode 49: Second Chance
<p>Nathan and Eppy discuss S4E4 Second Chance. Following up on our last episode (The Hammer of C Block), we visit the final Gandalf Fitch episode to see how the character has been handled since that debut. Gandy seems to have found a niche for himself bouncing at nightclubs, but when he decides to manage the career of a promising lounge singer (played by Dionne Warwick), he ends up hit on the head and chasing down ghosts from the past - and, of course, turns to Jim for help. Also featuring a complicating Angel appearance, this episode is both action-packed and very funny, paying little attention to Gandy's tragic origin story and leading us to the conclusion that the show essentially treats Gandy as a different character in the subsequent episodes, not a continuous one. This one gave us a lot to talk about, and we really enjoyed watching it!</p> <p>The joy of this one is in the endlessly watchable chemisty between not only Jim and Gandy, but Gandy and Theta (the Dionne Warwick character), Jim and Theta, and the explosive combination of Jim, Gandy and Angel. With memorable goons and a couple of strong character moments, we use our discussion to dive into the complications that arise from how gender and race are used as character and plot traits, along with our meta-discussion about how to square the "different Gandys" that we see across Isaac Haye's three appearances on the show.</p> <p>Want more Rockford Files trivia, notes and ephemera? <a href = "http://tinyurl.com/200files">Check out the Two Hundred a Day Rockford Files Files</a>!</p> <p><strong>Support the podcast by <a href = "https://www.patreon.com/twohundredaday">subscribing at patreon.com/twohundredaday</a></strong>.
