The University of Arizona is pioneering space technology with two key instruments for the Lazuli space telescope, part of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt Observatory System. Lazuli will search for planets around other stars and contribute to understanding life in the universe. The telescope, led by associate professor Ewan Douglas, will build on earth-based work to measure star distances and track the universes expansion. The instruments include a widefield camera and an extrasolar coronagraph to reveal faint planets or asteroid belts around other suns. The team is using public software and sharing all data and code to accelerate tech advancements for future missions to find earth-like worlds and signs of life.
