Sergio Vega, a Tucson native, is making waves in the wrestling world as a college freshman at Oklahoma State. He recently claimed the national championship in the one forty-one pound class, becoming the first undefeated true freshman since 1947. This victory, which included beating out two-time defending champion Jesse Mendez, has put Vega on the map early in his college career. Back home, Vega was already a standout wrestler, winning four Arizona high school state championships and the USA Junior Freestyle national championship. His community celebrated his win with a parade and a Congressional Certificate of Recognition from Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva.
